  • This experiment was executed to investigate the effect of the carpenter bee as a pollinator on the fruit set increment of sweet pepper in summer hydroponics in the alpine area of Gangwon province, Korea. Where the number of fruit sets were increasing during the treatment of pollination by the carpenter bee, total yields during the whole growing period were not different. The number of seeds per fruit in the treatment of the carpenter bee increased more than that in the control by 7.3 percent increment, but the percentage of blossom-end rot increased. As fruit weight range of SS size (below 120g) decreased and that of L size (from 181g to 210g) increased by the pollination treatment, so the percentage of standardized products for the export to Japan improved. Therefore this result was effective for the fruit production of high quality for the export to Japan and it will be necessary for further study on the method of reducing blossom-end rot to be done.

  • Fruit sweetness, as indexed by total soluble solids (TSS), and fruit acidity are key factors in the description of the fruit eating quality. Our group has been using short wave NIR spectroscopy (SW-NIR; 700-1100 nm) in combination with chemometric methods (PLS and MLR) for the non-invasive determination of the fruit eating quality (1,2). In order to further improve calibration performance, we have investigated SW-NIR spectra of sucrose and D-glucose. In previous reports on the band assignment for these sugars in the 1100-2500 nm spectral region (3-7), it has been established that change in concentration, temperature and physical state of sugars reflects on the shape and position of the spectral bands in the whole NIR region(5-7). The effect of change in concentration and temperature of individual sugar solutions and sugar spiked Juice samples was analysed using combined spectroscopic (derivative, difference, 2D spectroscopy) and linear regression chemometric (PLS, MLR) techniques. The results have been compared with the spectral data of a range of fruit types, varying in TSS content and temperature. In the 800-950 nm spectral region, the B-coefficients for apples, peaches and nectarines resemble those generated in a calibration of pure sucrose in water (Fig. 1). As expected, these fruits exhibit better calibration and prediction results than those in which the B-coefficients were poorly related to those for sugar.(Figure omitted).

  • An unreported disease of apricot was observed in orchards in Zhejiang province, China. Symptoms started as water soaked lesions on the fruit surface. Later, water-soaked areas developed and spread to the entire fruit, resulting in soft rot of the whole fruit. The causal organism isolated from symptomatic fruits was identified as Burkholderia cepacia based on its biochemical and physiological characteristics and confirmed by the cellular fatty acid composition and Biolog data as well as 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The bacterial isolates caused similar symptoms when inoculated onto fruits of apricot. In addition, European plum, Japanese plum, nectarine and kiwifruit were susceptible to the B. cepacia pathogen. However, the B. cepacia pathogen failed to cause any visible symptoms when it was inoculated onto 16 other fruits. This is the first report of a bacterial disease of apricot caused by B. cepacia in China.

  • Compare to investigate the taxonomic utility of infragenera system and interspecific of Asian Geranium, we examined the fruit and seed morphology from 35 taxa. The fruit shape and seed's dispersal way did so that may divide subgenus or some part section to do could reason evolutionary trends. That is, at seed dispersal, the awns of section Geranium of subgenus Geranium, ramains attached at the top of rostrum, though fairy easily broken off, because seed increases awn's elasticity by diffusive way, it is long characteristic seed\`s dispersal distance, and subgenus Robertium observed that seed dispersal distance is short because it is no awn's elasticity by way that seed dispersal is gone as awn drops with rostrum. Also, section Geranium of subgenus Geranium and subgenus Robertium act role that awn keeps temporarily breed swerving with mericarp instead of bristle because section Tuberosa of subgenus Geranium is not bristled function that keep temporarily breed because mericarp bristled on base at seed dispersal do while. Therefore, is thought that is talon that when consider formation's development and function regarding this seed dispersal function, subgenus Geraniuum evolves more than subgenus Robertium. Seed morphology can divide by 2 subgenera(Geranium, Robertium) according to pattern of seed coat. and Seed's morphology characteristic(whole shape, color, form of seed apical and base, micropyle area, hilum area, chalaza, and position of seed hilum area), can distinguish some species, but is thought that is not reasonable as for discernment characteristic form and nature by repetition of characteristic form and nature. Especially, infrasection do in fruit and seed's morphology that is handling in this research that know to argue classification system and relationship by repetition of characteristic form and nature difficult. To all reliable truth, cytological, ecological, embryology, and molecular genetics research about talon is considered that should be achieved section Geranium that do not handle yet.

  • The new Rubus coreanus Miq. variety, 'Doo-Ryun', was selected from 227 clones of the clone bank. This breeding was progressed to select the superior variety for high productivity from 1998 to 2005. To evaluate the clones, characteristics of a fruiting lateral and a ripe fruit were investigated. 'Doo-Ryun' was finally selected through selection of three times and stable trial at four different regions. 'Doo-Ryun' has specific morphological characteristics that are fewer thorn in lateral and strong glossiness of leaf upper side than contrast clone. The flowing and fruiting characteristics of 'Doo-Ryun' shown that the number of flower per fruitng lateral, the number of fruit per fruiting lateral, fruit weight and yield per individual were 17.2, 16.9, 1.73g and 4.50kg, respectively. Also, their selection effects were evaluated as 103.6%, 107.6%, 140.6% and 155.7% compared to the mean of whole clones in the clone bank, respectively.

  • This paper aims to compare the effects of two teaching methods, the discovery-observational(DO) and the expository-observational(EO) instructions, on students learning interest in the life cycle of fruit fly. The subjects, 463 third-graders from two elementary schools in Changwon City, were divided into two groups, the DO group and the EO group. After the instruction on the life of the flies in two different teaching ways, a questionnaire with 13 items was devised regarding the students' interest, and the subjects were asked to respond to it. The results reveal that the general mean score of the DO group is higher than that of the EO group. Also, the DO group obtains the higher mean score in each item, except two items about knowledge learning. The differences of the mean scores of the two types, general as well as item-individual, between the two groups are statistically significant. This suggests that the class about the life cycle of living creatures easily getatable and observable, such as fruit flies, should be student-centered investigatory one, where students themselves collect them and observe the process of their growth and whole cycle.

  • Two fruit fossils of Albizia miokalkora were collected from the Miocene Duho Formation of Yeonil Group in the northern Pohang Beach and Changpodong, Gyeongsangbug-do, Korea. The legume is flat and long and has 7 rounded seeds. Although the legume fossils are preserved as impression, they show their whole shape well. It is considered that the fossil Albizia might have flourished in a warm temperate climate in East Asia. This discovery is the second record of Albizia from the Neogene of Korea.

  • Aldose reductase (AR), the key enzyme in the polyol pathway, plays an important role in the development of the diabetic complications. None of Aldose reductase Inhibitor (ARI) has achieved worldwide use because of limited efficacy or undesirable side effects. Therefore, evaluating natural sources for ARI potential may lead to the development of safer and more effective agents against diabetic complications. Fifty two Chinese herbal medicines have been investigated for inhibitory activities on AR. Among them, twelve herbal medicines, Artemisia anomala (aerial part), Centella asiatica (aerial part), Scutellaria baicalensis (root), Senecio chrysanthermoides (whole plant), Gleditsia japonica (twig), Zizyphus jujube (twig, leaf), Citrus aurantium (fruit), Hydnocarpus anthelmintica (fruit), Potaninia mongolica (aerial part), Tribulus terrestris (fruit), Artemisia apiacea (aerial part) and Eclipta prostrate (aerial part) exhibited a significant inhibitory activity against AR. Particularly, Artemisia anomala, Centella asiatica and Scutellaria baicalensis showed four times more potent inhibitory activity than the positive control, 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric acid (TMG).

  • This study was conducted to investigated effects of water relation of mulching and trickle irrigation on the external and internal fruit quality in Satsuma mandarin grafted on trifoliate orange rootstock in a orchard assigned to randomly three groups; whole period of Tyvex mulching (TM), Tyvex mulching with trickle irrigation once a week from October 22 to harvesting season (WM) and non-mulching treatment (NM). The average soil moisture content in the TM was lower than the WM during the time of trickle irrigation from Oct. 21 to Nov. 28. The leaf water potential was at the level of ${\Psi}max$ of -1.5 to -2.5 MPa during whole period of Tyvex mulching treatment but gradually increased at the point of supplement of water. The water and osmotic potential in juice vesicle was decreased by drought but increased again in response to the supply of water in WM. The total soluble solids (TSS) in fruit juice was increased by drought stress, but diminished in response to supply of water after drought. The content of titratible acidity was increased by drought stress but gradually decreased due to supplement of water after drought, reached it at the level of 1%. It was suggested that the accumulation of the total soluble solids compensates the degree of active osmoregulation and the decrease in content of acidity accounts for the fast respiration and water uptake resulted of the water after drought.

  • The present study investigated the alcohol fermentation characteristics of citrus fruit hydrolysates for the development of citrus fruit wine with enhanced functionality. The alcohol content of whole citrus (A) and removed peels citrus fruit (B) was 10.13% and 10.83%, respectively. The sugar content of (A) was $12.98^{\circ}Brix$, which was slightly higher than that of (B) ($11.38^{\circ}Brix$), but no significant difference in the alcohol fermentation characteristics was observed. Although the hesperidin content was not largely affected by removed peels the narirutin content of (A) was increased to $281.31\;{\mu}M$, which was significantly higher than that of (B) ($199.05\;{\mu}M$). Thus, the whole citrus was used for fermentation. Investigation of alcohol fermentation characteristics based on yeast type found that the maximum alcohol content was 12.75% when S. bayanus EC-1118 was used. The alcohol content reached 12.40% at an initial acidity of 0.2%, but when the initial acidity was higher than 0.2%, the alcohol content was slightly decreased. At an initial sugar content of $22^{\circ}Brix$, the alcohol content was 11.65%, and the maximum alcohol content of 12.85% was observed when at an initial sugar content of $24^{\circ}$Brix.
