  • The aluminum dross is oxide generated on the surface of the molten metal during the aluminum melting process and it is divided into white dross and black dross according to presence of the Salt flux. White dross has high metal content and is recycled via the melting process. Black dross is largely berried, because the it has a low metal content and difficulty in separating the components. Black dross contains a salt components such as NaCl and KCl, and inorganic materials such as $Al_2O_3$ and MgO, and it is necessary to study the technology to recover and recycle such valuable resources. In this study, a process for recycling aluminum black dross was proposed. The inorganic and soluble substances present in the black dross were separated through crushing-dissolution-solid/liquid separation-decompression evaporating. By controlling the ratio of water and black dross, the recovery condition of the separated product was optimized and we confirmed the highest Salt flux recovery efficiency 91 wt.% at black dross:water ratio 1:9. Finally, Through the synthesis of zeolite using recovered ceramic material, the materialization possibility of black dross was confirmed.

  • The variety and density of entomopathogenic nematodes from the polluted soils of heavy metals were examined. In order to investigate the pollution of heavy metals in soil, 300 sites in kyungsangbuk-do were collected from March to October in 2001. We measured the contents of seven heavy metal elements (Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb, Cr^{6+}$, CN) and than cheesed soil of 25 sites with high concentration of heavy metals. The seven strains of nematodes were isolated from seven samples by silkworm host (Bombyx mori mori) and white trap. Isolated nematodes are composed of two families, one order. The members of Rhabditida were isolated in the soil with mean Cd content of 0.870 ppm. And they were isolated in the soil samples with As content less than 0.745 ppm. However they were isolated regardless of concentration of Cu and Pb. The members of Cylindrocorpidae were isolated in the soil samples with Cr^{6+}$ content less than 0.05 ppm. Any entomopathogenic nematode was not detected in the CN polluted soil. Isolated nematodes successfully cultured on the silkworm host and were confirmed the pathogenicity, multiplicity, and tolerance against various condition of preservation. Which proved its potential usefulness as biological agent.

  • We have synthesized bluish-green, highly-efficient $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ and $(Ba,Sr)Si_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors through a conventional solid state reaction method using metal carbonate, $Si_3N_4$, and $Eu_2O_3$ as raw materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of these phosphors revealed that a $BaSi_2O_2N_2$ single phase was obtained. The excitation and emission spectra showed typical broadband excitation and emission resulting from the 5d to 4f transition of $Eu^{2+}$. These phosphors absorb blue light at around 450 nm and emit bluish-green luminescence, with a peak wavelength at around 495 nm. From the results of an experiment involving Eu concentration quenching, the relative PL intensity was reduced dramatically for Eu = 0.033. A small substitution of Sr in place of Ba increased the relative emission intensity of the phosphor. We prepared several white LEDs through a combination of $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$, YAG:$Ce^{3+}$, and silicone resin with a blue InGaN-based LED. In the case of only the YAG:$Ce^{3+}$-converted LED, the color rendering index was 73.4 and the efficiency was 127 lm/W. In contrast, in the YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ and $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$-converted LED, two distinct emission bands from InGaN (450 nm) and the two phosphors (475-750 nm) are observed, and combine to give a spectrum that appears white to the naked eye. The range of the color rendering index and the efficiency were 79.7-81.2 and 117-128 lm/W, respectively. The increased values of the color rendering index indicate that the two phosphor-converted LEDs have improved bluish-green emission compared to the YAG:Ce-converted LED. As such, the $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor is applicable to white high-rendered LEDs for solid state lighting.

  • Major egg white proteins and their hydrolysates serve as functional food ingredients that have certain metal-chelating properties. Employing egg white proteins and their hydrolysates to scavenge dietary oxalates is anticipated to have beneficial effect in the prevention of kidney stones. The objective of this study was to determine the biogenic oxalate-chelating activity of ovalbumin, ovomucin, and ovotransferrin and their hydrolysates. To prepare oxalate extracts, 30 mL of 0.25 N HCl was added to separately to 0.5 g of dried spinach and starfruit powders followed by boiling for 15 min, and after cooling, the addition of a further 20 mL of 0.25 N HCl. Having prepared these extracts, ovalbumin, ovomucin, and ovotransferrin and their hydrolysates were separately mixed with oxalate extracts and incubated at 3℃ for 24 h. Following centrifugation, supernatants were analyzed by HPLC using a reverse-phase C18 column coupled with a diode array detector. We found that all assessed proteins and their hydrolysates showed biogenic oxalate-chelating activity against the oxalates of spinach. In contrast, however, only ovalbumin, ovalbumin-hydrolysate, and ovomucin showed chelating activity (57.10%±8.84%, 85.44%±5.30%, 73.20%±4.13%, respectively) against the oxalates of starfruit (P<0.05). Overall, hydrolyzed ovalbumin was identified as the most effective chelator of the oxalates both spinach and starfruit. In this study, we thus established that the assessed egg white proteins and their hydrolysates have oxalate-chelating activity in vitro, thereby indicating that these compounds have potential utility as nutraceuticals for the chelation of dietary oxalate. However, further research will be necessary to verify their oxalate-chelating activities against different fruits and vegetables and under specific in vivo conditions and against purified oxalate.

  • Recently, many groups have attempted to fabricate 3-dimensional (3D) structures of GaN such as pyramids, rods, stripes and annulars. Since quantum structures on non-polar and semi-polar planes of 3D structures have less influence of internal electric filed, multi quantum wells (MQWs) formed on those planes have high quantum efficiency. Especially, pyramidal and annular structures consist of various crystal planes with different emission wavelength, providing a possibillity of phosphor-free white light emtting diodes (WLEDs).[1] However, it still has problem to obtain high color rendering index (CRI) number because of narrow-band emission and poor indium composition caused by the formation of few number of facets during metal-organic chemical vapor deposition growth.[2] If we can fabricate 3D structure having more various facets, we can make broad-band emittied WLEDs and improve CRI number. In this study, we suggest a simple method to fabricate 3D structures having various facet and containing high indium composition by means of a combination of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition and wet chemical etching techniques.

  • In order to investigate the color variation and the solubility limit in wagnerites by metal ion substitution, wagnerite ($A_2XO_4Z$) was synthesized and then, substituted by coloring metal ions, especially $CO^{2+},Ni^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions. When calcium was replaced with Mg, Co, Ni and Cu divalent ions, solid solutions were formed with a limited solubility. Single phase wagnerites were synthesized by the substitution of Ca with Mg and Co, and their colors were white and purple, respectively. Substitutions with $Li^+$ were succeeded in the specific composition and the substitution of vanadium for $X^{5+}$ were attempted, resulting in the wagnerites of dark purple, dark gold and light yellow colors. The substitution of chlorine was, also, attmepted for the fluorine site.

  • Blue jeans are finished with stonewashing process to give it optimal softness and color contrast of blue and white. So, Yellowing may well be generated during storage or use and thereby, their appearance may be damaged much. So, this study was aimed at finding the solutions to reduce the yellowing problem caused by residual metals after stonewshing. To this end, sample blue jeans were made to be finished with various methods of wet-treatment and then, be subject to daylight to check their photoyellowing. The results of this test can be summarized as follows; Since the stonewashing process was found to affect the yellowing, the residual metals of stone- washed blue jeans was analyzed. And it was found that it contained such residual metal as Al, Ca, Cu, Ti, Si, K and Zn. In particular, it was conceived that Al was a prime cause affecting the yellowing. Meanwhile, when the blue jeans were treated by the metal ionchelating agent of EDTA-2Na, the residual levels of Al and Ti were reduced by about 50%, while the photoyellolving was lowered by 75%, which is suggesed that EDTA is very effective in preventing the yellowing. On the other hand, when the blue jeans were bleached by the hypochlorite, chlorine remained in blue jean accelerated the yellowing. However, when this blue jean was treated again by the sodium thiosulfate for its dechloridization, the residual of chlorine was reduced, and the yellowing was lowered by about 43%.

  • Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) is a human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced alteration of the oral mucosa that presents with a clinically distinct appearance. While other HPV-infected lesions such as squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, and condyloma acuminatum involve the skin, oral mucosa, and genital mucosa, FEH occurs only in the oral mucosa. The affected oral mucosa exhibits multiple papules and nodules with each papule/nodule being flat-topped or sessile. The affected region resembles the normal color of oral mucosa rather than appearing as a white color since the epithelial surface is not hyperkeratinized. Almost all cases present with multiple sites of occurrence. This rare, benign epithelial proliferation is related to low-risk HPV, especially HPV-13 and -32, and is not transformed into carcinoma. We report a case of FEH that arose on the attached gingiva of an East Asian male adult related to prosthesis without detection of any HPV subtype in HPV DNA chip and sequencing.

  • Ruthenium (Ru) is a white metal and belongs to platinum group which is very stable chemically and has a high work function. It has been widely studied to apply Ru as an electrode material in memory devices and a Cu diffusion barrier metal for Cu interconnection due to good electrical conductivity and adhesion property to Cu layer. To planarize deposited Ru layer, chemical mechanical planarization(CMP) was suggested. However, abrasive particle can induce particle contamination on the Ru layer surface during CMP process. In this study, zeta potentials of Ru and interaction force of alumina particles with Ru substrate were measured as a function of pH. The etch rate and oxidation behavior were measured as a function of chemical concentration of several organic acids and other acidic and alkaline chemicals. PRE (particle removal efficiency) was also evaluated in cleaning chemical.

  • White and black dross are resulted from the recycling of aluminum. There are no established processes to recover valuable materials from black dross. Hydrometallurgical processes seem to be suitable for the treatment of aluminum dross. The salts in the black dross are recovered by dissolving with water. The residues are treated by either alkaline or acid leaching. Although the leaching rate of alumina by NaOH is lower than that by acid, its intermediates are more suitable to the production of alumina-based materials. The future direction for the treatment and recovery of valuable materials from aluminum dross is discussed.
