In this study, the shapes of the wheel and rail are represented by using 3-dimensional surface functions with surface parameters and a 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis is presented. A whole numerical solution of wheel-rail contact at tread and flange including 2-point contacts can be achieved with the proposed numerical algorithm. Kinematic characteristics such as variances of vertical displacement and roll angle, and variance of wheel radius difference for arbitrary yaw and lateral displacement of wheelset, are determined for the KTX wheel-rail pair as an example. The condition of yaw and lateral displacement occurring 2-point contacts to analyze derailment are compared between standard and worn wheels. Differences of contact characteristics between curved and straight rails are also analyzed.
A real train load fluctuates along the track because of complicated movements(Bouncing, Rolling, Pitching and Yawing) and rail conditions. This research has for its object in development of a numerical train load model including fluctuation characteristics of lateral forces. It is based on Klingel movement theory of a wheelset on straight track. it presents a propriety of application by comparison between a 3D-Numerical analysis result using this train load model and a measured data. And this paper presents further study subject to improve a method about the train load modeling.
This paper presents the numerical results of the stress analysis of wheel-rail contact problems. Two models which have straight and tapered(1:20) contact geometries between the wheelset and rail are analyzed using the finite element approach. From the simulation results we found that the tapered geometry of wheel-rail contact base line showed very stable contact stress distributions for a whole contact position between the wheel and rail in a curved rail section. The FEM computed results may present an optimized geometry of wheel-rail contact in a high-speed railway system.
In the present paper the dynamics of the structure varying multibody systems caused by stick-slip motion with two-dimensional dry friction are analyzed. The methods to determine friction force both in stick and slip states are described. The direct method of considering the wagon bogie system as a structure varying system was used to consider two dimensional friction at the wheelset-side frame connection. The concept of friction direction angle used to determine the friction force components of two-dimensional dry friction both in the stick and slip motion states was used. A speed depended friction coefficient was used and described approximately by hyperbolic secant function. All switch conditions were derived and friction forces both for stick and slip states. Some simulation results are provided.
As freight traffic becomes heavier, the high speed of existing freight cars is essential, instead of the construction of a new railway. The high speed can be achieved by the modifications of freight bogie design. In this paper, an analytical model of freight bogie is developed to decide the critical speed. The dynamic responses of the analytical model are compared with the experimental data from a running test of freight bogie and showed good agreements between them. The analytical model is used to find the design of freight bogie. The parameter studies show that the reduction of wheelset mass ratio and the increase of the axle distance of freight bogie can increase the critical speed, but the primary lateral stiffness has little effects on the critical speed. And this study also shows that smaller wheel conicity deteriorates the running safety of freight car, which means that the overhauling of the wheel of freight bogie should be done regularly.
Understanding the contact between wheel and rail is a starting point in railway vehicle dynamic research area and especially analysis for the contact geometry between wheel and rail is important. On the one hand, the critical speed as the natural characteristics of rolling-stock is generally tested on the roller rig. The geometrical characteristics of the wheel/roller contact on the roller rig are different from these of the general wheel/rail contact because the longitudinal radius of roller is not infinite compared with rail. Thus, in this paper we developed the algorithm to analyze the wheel/roller contact geometry of our roller rig which is constructed now and analyzed the difference between whee/roller contact and wheel/rail contact. In conclusion, we found that the yaw motion of wheelset and the roller radius influence the geometrical contact parameters in wheel flange contact area.
As the freight traffic becomes heavier, the high speed of existing freight cars is essential instead of the construction of a new railway. The high speed can be achieved by the design modifications of the freight bogie. In this paper, an analytical model of freight bogie including the lateral force between rail and the flange of wheel is developed to decide the critical speed, which activates a hunting motion and tells the running safety of freight bogie. The dynamic responses of the analytical model were compared with an experimental data from a running test of a freight bogie and showed good agreements between them. The analytical model is used to find the design modifications of the freight bogie by parameter studies. The results show that the reduction of wheelset mass ratio and the increase of the axle distance of the freight bogie can increase the critical speed, but the primary lateral stiffness has little effects on the critical speed. And this also study shows that smaller wheel conicity deteriorates the running safety of the freight car, which means the overhauling of the wheel of freight bogie should be done regularly.
For the safety of railway, it should be evaluated for the running safety by measuring the derailment coefficient. Although railway has run the fixed and maintained rail, some of railway is derailed. This report shows the results that performed the static load test, wheelset manufacturing for test, main line running test on the basis of the derailment theory and experience. It is executed main line test to 120 km/h for estimating the running safety of express train in Incheon International Airport. As the test results, could confirm the curving performance and running safety of Incheon International Airport EMU from the results of the wheel unloading, lateral force, derailment coefficient etc. Derailment coefficient was less than 0.8, and lateral force allowance limit and wheel load reduction ratio were enough safe.
This paper describes the design process and the test of split wheel-mounted brake discs for high speed train with maximum speed 180km/h. A disc set composed 2 disc rings and individual rings are partitioned into 3 pieces with the same circumferential angle. Because partitioned disc rigs are exposed to severe centrifugal force as the vehicle speed increase, finite element analyses used in the design process to ensure mechanical safety. A prototype was verified its mechanical safety through the spin test up to 250km/h. 2 prototypes for 1 wheelset are mounted to Korean Tilting Train(TTX) and have been running over 15,000km
The railway vehicle consists of wires, bodies, bogies and wheelsets, and each part has very complex mechanism. In this paper, wheel-rail contact algorithm is implemented using C++ and inserted into the ODYN which is a dynamic analysis program. To analyze wheel-rail contact mechanism, information such as contact points, contact angle and rolling radius is calculated according to the wheel and rail profile. Using this information, a table for the calculation of the wheel-rail contact analysis is made according to the lateral displacement. And, the creepage and normal force are calculated and a creep force is estimated by the FASTSIM. To verify the reliability of the wheel-rail contact algorithm, results of the program are compared with the ADAMS/Rail and paper. Finally, a wheelset of the railway vehicle is modeled using ODYN and simulated static and dynamic analysis. And, to verify the reliability of the simulation results, a displacement, velocity, acceleration and force are compared with results of ADAMS/Rail.
