Optimisation of Rolling Stock Wheelset Life through Better Understanding of Wheel Tyre Degradation

  • Since the 1990's the fleet of the Dutch Railways showed a dramatic decrease in wheel tyre life. This lifetime reduction led to an unacceptable increase in life cycle costs. Therefore Lloyd's Register Rail has proposed to NedTrain to investigate the possibilities of improving the wheel tyre life. Three improvements were determined as most promising and relatively easy to achieve: - Profile optimisation for Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) reduction - a new wheel profile has been developed with a better resistance against rolling contact fatigue of the wheel tread. The profile has been implemented on single deck intercity trains and shows an increase in wheel tyre life of 30%. - Selection of improved wheel tyre materials - combining information from literature and experiences of manufacturers five alternative wheel tyre materials have been selected and are now being tested in practice. - Optimisation of the maintenance strategy - an alternative, preventative maintenance regime has been developed. With this Scraping regime, during short term maintenance every wheel is reprofiled. Higher mileages are reached and savings on life cycle costs up to 50% and more have been achieved. Unplanned maintenance goes down with $30{\sim}60%$. The results from field tests, using a reference group for comparison, and preliminary results after implementation show that the increase in wheel tyre life that is achieved with this project is significant. The results will continue to be monitored using the asset management tool 'Wheel Watch', that was specially developed for this project and is also described in this paper.

곡선 구간에서 철도 차량 휠의 마모 특성 해석 (A Wheel Wear Analysis of Railway Vehicle on a Curved Section)

  • 철도차량의 휠의 마모는 주로 곡선 주행 시 발생한다. 휠의 형상 변화는 차량 동적 안정성에 중요한 영향을 미친다. 본 연구에서는 곡선 주행 시 휠 마모 특성 분석을 위해 곡선 반경 크기와 속도를 변경시키면서 휠 마모량을 계산하였다. 다물체 동역학 해석에 기초한 차량 동역학 해석결과로부터 마모인자를 계산하고 BRR(British Rail Research)에서 제시한 마모 모델을 이용하여 휠의 마모량을 계산하였다. 반경 300m에서의 마모량이 다른 반경과 비교하여 매우 큰 것으로 나타났다. 곡선 선로에 윤활유를 도유하는 경우 마모 특성 변화를 분석하기 위해 휠의 답면과 플랜지 부위의 마찰계수를 다르게 하여 휠 마모량을 계산하였다. 도유 시 휠 마모의 개선 효과를 여러 반경에서 계산하고 실제 도시철도구간에서 마모 개선 효과를 확인하였다.

  • In this study, the most important suspension characteristics of railway vehicle, such as primary and secondary stiffness, are optimized to maximize ride qualify. Critical speed, secondary suspension stroke oil tangent track and derailment coefficient on the maximum curvature, are selected as the performance constraints. Piecewise linear curving model is used to evaluate derailment coefficient where it is assumed that wheel/rail contacts occurs at tread or at idealized flange. The combined design procedure is used to optimize above design variables at the same time.

  • Korean high speed train (KHST) has adopted a combined electric/ mechanic (friction) braking system. Electric brakes are consist of rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake and mechanical brakes are composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, we introduce the braking performance test and the measuring method of mechanical brake. And disc brake performance has been reviewed by the experimental method. The on-line test of KHST has been carried out up to 260 km/h and proved that the disc braking capacity of KHST is sufficient.

한국형 고속전철의 디스크 제동력 측정 방법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Measuring Method of Disc Braking Force for HSR 350x)

  • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely the train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine properly the various brakes. Korean high speed train (HSR 350x) has adopted a combined electric and mechanic (friction) braking system. Electric brakes are consist of rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake and mechanical brakes are composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, the measuring method that can take a measurement of the braking forces for disc brake and wheel disc brake has been suggested and we have verified that this method is valid through on-line test of HSR 350x.

  • 차량의 윤폭과 윤거 정보를 산출하는 답판 센서는 국내 유로 도로의 차종 분류 장치에서 일반적으로 사용 된다. 답판 센서는 차량 정보를 생성하기 위하여, 주행 중인 차랑의 바퀴와 접촉이 필요하며 따라서 이때 발생하는 충격을 견디기 위해 높은 내구성이 요구된다. 최근 한국도로공사가 요금소에서 화물차 고속 차로의 운영을 시작함에 따라, 화물차가 고속 주행할 때 발생하는 설계 기준 이상의 충격으로 인한 답판의 파손과 이에 따른 유지보수 및 관리 비용의 증가가 염려되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 물리적 충격에 대한 내구성을 향상 시킨 무접점 답판 센서를 사용해서, 통과 차량의 차종을 분류하는 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 이는 한국도로공사 6종 분류 방식을 기준으로 하였고, 지방도 1020호선의 창원 요금소를 통과하는 1892대를 대상으로 한 실험에서 99.5%의 분류 정확도를 나타내었고, 무접점 답판을 사용한 차종 분류 장치가 국내 유료 도로에 효과적으로 적용이 가능함을 확인하였다.

타이어 설계인자를 고려한 자동차 현가계의 진동특성 (Vibration Characteristics of Automobile Suspension System considering Tire Design Parameters)

  • The model is verified thorough simulations and experiments. And then the developed model is applied to a half car model and automobile vibrations are analyzed. The effects of tire design parameters on the automobile vibration energy are investigated. The results from laboratory and field tests confirm the validity of the analytical model. The 17-DOF half-car model is built to analyze the automobile vibration. The characteristics of the nonlinear model for a shock absorber are applied to this model. The results from the present 17-DOF half car model incorporating the analytical tire model with tire design parameters, are compared with a 5-DOF half car model where the tire is modeled with linear springs. The results of the 17-DOF model are closed to experimental results. Using the 17-DOF model, the influences of tire design parameter are considered. According to the results of analyses, the vibrations at seat/body/wheel are predicted by simulation and experiment.

  • Tire vibration modes are known to play a key role in vehicle ride and comfort characteristics. Inputs to the tire such as impacts, rough road surface, tire nonuniformities, and tread patterns can potentially excite tire vibration. In this study, experimental modal analysis on the tire in ground contact are performed by a 3-D impact at the center of contact patch to investigate which modes of tire influence the vibration of wheel and axle. Through the experiment, the vibration transmission properties from tire to axle are examined. And we have compared the influential tire modes when the tire is excited by a vertical impact with those when excited by the 3-D impact. Additionally, the modes of ground contact tire are compared with those of the suspended tire.

  • As the technique of automobile industry is being advanced, the advancement of vehicle ride is being required. In order to achieve this purpose, the study on the vibration which are produced by moving vehicle is carried out actively. In this study, the tire vibration characteristics for passing over a cleat are analyzed. The model is verified against simulations and experiments. The tire is modeled with 7-DOFs (degree of freedom), and the effects of changing tire design parameters are considered. According to the results of analysis, the design parameters that reduce the tire and wheel vibration energy are conducted.

  • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. The prototype of Korean high speed train (KHST) has been designed, fabricated and tested by the domestic researchers. It has adopted a combined electrical brakes, such as rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake, and mechanical brakes composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, the performances and control algorithms of braking system have been reviewed by the experimental method.
