Wettability is an important factor to decide solderability of solder, flux, other soldering-related materials and soldering conditions. The wettability also affects the reliability of solder joint. Wetting balance test is a good method for quantitatively measuring wettability between solder and substrate. The wetting balance test is easy to reproduce the wetting experiment and to measure the wetting time and force. And this test provides wetting curve to calculate the surface tension of the molten solder. Development of new solder has been continued in accordance with various and harsh environment in the electronics industry. In this paper, the principle of wetting balance test and recent research issues including nano-composite solder are explained.

The objectives of this paper are to develop a new method of wettability mea-surement and to study the effect of surface roughness on the wettability in a $H_2O$/LiBr falling film absorber. Two absorber tubes with micro-scale roughness and a bare tube are tested in a falling film absorber installed in a test rig. Inlet solution temperature, concentration and mass flow rate are considered as key parameters. A new method is proposed to estimate the wettability of a tube by measuring a minimum mass flow rate to wet the tube completely. The wettability for the structured surfaces was higher than that for the bare tube. The wettability decreased linearly along the vertical location. The wettability increased with increasing the solution temperature and the solution mass flow rate. The experimental correlations of the wettability for the bare and the micro-hatched tubes were developed with error bands of$\pm20%\;and\;\pm10%$, respectively. This work can be used in the design of absorbers with micro-scale roughness.
It is pointed out that non-wetting behavior of liquid Zn alloy occurs on high-tensile strength steels, which usually contain Si and Mn. There have been a lot of investigations to improve the above wettability of liquid Zn alloy with steels containing Si and Mn. Although those studies evaluated the wettability qualitatively by observation of the surface of steels galvanized by Zn or exfoliation test of Zn with substrate steels and so on, it is required to evaluate the wettability of liquid Zn with steels by measuring contact angle, work of adhesion, spreading velocity etc. which are usually used to assessment of general wetting behavior. In the present work, we evaluated the wettability of liquid Zn with steels containing Si and Mn by applying a sessile drop method to measure the change in contact angle and diameter of liquid Zn droplet wetted on steels.

Interfacial properties and microfailure modes of electrodeposition (ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide (PEI) toughened epoxy composite were investigated using microdroplet test and the measurement of surface wettability. As PEI content increased, Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated case, IFSS increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, for ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. The work of adhesion between fiber and matrix was not directly proportional to IFSS for both the untreated and ED-treated cases. The matrix toughness might contribute to IFSS more likely than the surface wettability. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.
Wettability of addition silicone impression material is very important property for making an accurate restoration. This study examined the impression quality in clinical condition and the wettability of impression and die material. Four commercially available addition silicone impression material (Express, Examix, Contrast, Perfect) and three die materials (Die-Keen, Vel-Mix, Fuji-Rock) were studied. A total of 50 putty/wash and heavy body/wash impressions of wet intact permanent molar teeth were examined for definition of the gingival sulcus reproduction and then classified in quality ranking. The percentage of the sulcus reproduction ability of each material was calculated from the sulcus depths of cross-sectioned epoxy resin casts from the impressions and clinically measured sulcus depths, The same impression materials were used to produce 3 groups of die stone casts form void entrapment die had been exposed to milk. Voids in the impression body and stone casts ere counted under a stereoscopic microscope. From the experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. Sulcus reproduction ability of additional silicone impression material were diminished in order of Express, Examix, Perfect, Contrast. The significant difference was found between Perfect and other material. Heavy body/wash combination was superior In putty/wash method n Perfect impression material. 2. In direct observation, Contrast showed least void in impression body but correlations ere not found between sulcus reproduction and void production. 3. In void entrapment laboratory test, wettability were diminished in order of Examix, Contrast, Express, Perfect. Clinical impression recording seems not to correlate with laboratory test. 4. The wettability of die material to impression material was not different in Express, Examix, Contrast. But, in Perfect, Die-Keen had superior wettability to others.
Effects of non-cleaning and cleaning fluxes on the wetting properties and defects at flow soldered joints were investigated. Non-cleaning flux (R-type of 3.3% solid content) and cleaning flux (RMA-type of 15% solid content) were used. Wetting test was accomplished by wetting balance method with changing surface state of wetting specimen, CU. Sn-37%Pb solder was used for wetting test and flow soldering. As experimental results, the wetting time for vertical force from the surface tension being zero was mainly affected by surface state of the wetting specimen. Non-cleaning flux had a good wettability compared with cleaning flux. In case of non-cleaning flux, conveyor speed had a great affection to defects of bridge, icicle, and poor solder.

Recently, there has been a continuous researches on solders having sophisticated and improved performance due to demand for high-density and miniaturization of electronics, and development of solder for automotive electronics which can be used in harsh environment. When developing a new solder alloy, there is a wettability of solder on substrate for things to consider, and the wetting balance test is one of the methods for measuring that one. In this paper, the wetting balance test is introduced, and the calculus of the surface tension of solder and the contact angle between solder and substrate using wetting curve obtained is introduced too. In detail, the principle and test method of the wetting balance test, the introduction of the parameters with important meaning in the wetting curve, the method of calculating the contact angle as well as the surface tension of the solder using the shape of the solder meniscus.
Purpose: This study aims to get the fundamental data which is necessary to the development direction of implant surface treatment hereafter, based on the understanding the surface structure and properties of titanium which is suitable for the absorption of initial tissue fluid by researching effects of additional surface treatments fir sandblasted with large git and acid-etched(SLA) titanium on surface micro-roughness, static wettability, fibronectin adsorption Materials and Method: In the Control groups, the commercial pure titanium disks which is 10mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness were treated with HCI after sandblasting with 50$\mu$m $Al_2O_3$. The experiment groups were made an experiment each by being treated with 1) 22.5% nitric acid according to SLA+ASTM F86 protocol, 2) SLA+30% peroxide, 3) SLA+NaOH, 4) SLA+ Oxalic acid, and 5) SLA+600$^{\circ}C$ heating. In each group, the value of Ra and RMS which are the gauges of surface roughness was measured, surface wettability was measured by analyzing with Sessile drop method, and fibronectin adsorption was measured with immunological assay. The significance of each group was verified by (SPSS, ver.10.0 SPSS Inc.) Kruskal-Wallis Test. (α=0.05) And the correlation significance between Surface micro-roughness and surface wettability. surface roughness and fibronectin adsorption, and surface wettability and fibronectin adsorption was tested by Spearman's correlation analysis. Result: All measure groups showed the significant differences in surface micro-roughness, surface wettability, and fibronectin adsorption. (p<0.05) There was no significance in correlation among the surface micro-roughness, surface wettability, and fibronectin adsorption. (p>0.05) Conclusion: Surface micro-roughness and surface wettability rarely affected the absorption of initial tissue fluid on the surface of titanium.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Poor wettability of denture relining materials may lead to retention problems and patient discomfort. PURPOSE. Purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate wettability of nine denture relining materials using contact angle measurements under air and water storage over time. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Nine denture relining materials were investigated in this study. Two heat-curing polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA) denture base materials: Vertex RS, Lang, one self-curing polyethyl-methacrylate(PEMA) chairside reline resin: Rebase II, six silicone relining materials: Mucopren soft, Mucosoft, $Mollosil^{{R}}$ plus, Sofreliner Touch, GC $Reline^{TM}$ Ultrasoft, Silagum automix comfort were used in this experiment. Contact angles were measured using high-resolution drop shape analysis system(DSA 10-MK2, KRUESS, Germany) under three conditions(in air after setting, 1 hour water storage, and 24 hours water storage). Nine materials were classified into three groups according to material composition(Group 1: PMMA, Group 2: PEMA, Group 3: Silicone). Mean values of contact angles were compared using independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA, followed by a Scheffe's post hoc analysis($\alpha$=0.01). RESULTS. Contact angles of materials tested after air and water storage increased in the following order: Group 1(PMMA), Group 2(PEMA), Group 3(Silicone). Heat-cured acrylic denture base resins had more wettability than silicone relining materials. Lang had the highest wettability after 24 hours of water storage. Silicone relining materials had lower wettability due to their hydrophobicity. Wettability of all denture relining materials, except Rebase II and $Mollosil^{{R}}$ plus, increased after 24 hours of water storage. CONCLUSIONS. Conventional heat-cured resin showed the highest wettability, therefore, it can be suggested that heat-cured acrylic resin is material of choice for denture relining materials.
Powder type Ag system insert metals were manufactured by mechanical alloying method. Alloying method was the ball milling process using zirconia ball media, and all alloying variables were constant except the milling time. The milling times were selected 24, 48 and 72 hours. The insert metals made by milling method were observed using scanning electron microscope and x-ray analyses. And also, the evaluation of wettability and microstructures of the insert metals were conducted to investigate the characteristics of the brazed joint. The wettability of the insert metals made by milling of 48 hours, was the best condition. And the insert metals contained Cd shows good wettability, however, there was the oxides residue on the brazing test specimen. The microstructures of the manufactured and the commercial insert metals were almost same displaying the Cu- rich proeutectic and Ag-rich eutectic. Further, there were some porosities. The 48 hours alloyed insert metal was exhibited the most sound brazed joint without containing porosity due to the superior wettability and good alloying condition.
