It was found that most prominent similarities among non-Western cultures in postnatal care have centered mainly on the issues such as 'Hot and Cold balance', postnatal confinement etc. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it should be suggested that the health professionals do their efforts in understanding deeply the intrinsic diversities on the beliefs and the practices about postnatal care and providing the adequate services and cares reflecting them properly.
The objectives of this study were to examine the utilization patterns of oriental medical care and to discover problems in its delivery. The data for this study were collected from a questionnaire survey mailed out from March 10 to April 9 1999 to 6.346 oriental medical clinic. The questionnaires were then distributed to two patients in each clinics. Of these questionnaires. 670 were completed and returned. The major statistical methods used for the analysis were the t-test. ANOVA, and x$^2$-test. The major findings are as follows: 1. Respondents reported visiting oriental doctors twice as often as they visited western doctors(All those completing the survey received the questionnaire at oriental medical clinics). 2. The number of reported visits to oriental physicians according to among gender, age, marital status, education, income and residence. Males, married respondents, the elderly and the residents of rural areas visited oriental physicians more frequently than females, singles, younger respondents and urbanites. Those people belonging to the middle income class and middle education level also more frequently visited oriental physicians. 3. There are several factors that restrict the utilization of oriental medical care, such as the limitation of the scientific diagnostic instrument use commonplace reliance upon western medical techniques, and the perception of high price for oriental medical care. It is very important to focus oriental medical care onto the fields of acupuncture, circulatory system disease, musculoskeletal system ailments, etc. to improve the utilization of oriental medical care. Other policies for the improvement of oriental medical care include the standardization of price, quality and quantity of oriental medicine.
Objectives : This study was to analyze the status of patients with infertility in the department of oriental gynecology in an oriental medical hospital and propose infertility treatment in oriental medicine. Methods : This study was presented with 2,153 cases of infertile women who had visited the department of oriental gynecology in one oriental hospital in Seoul from 2002 to 2004. Results : The total number infertile patients has decreased year by year. The age range of patients was getting higher and the age group between 30 and 35 took up about one half of the total patients. The duration of infertility for less than 3 years held about 50-60% of the total patients, and the mean duration of infertility was $39.18{\pm}29.57$ months (2004). The most common occupations of females were professionals or administrative managers. The secondary infertility was increasing and unexplained infertility increased from 38.2% (in 2002) to 54.4% (in 2004). However the duration of treatment was shorter. This shows that the age range of the patients having oriental-medicine treatment is gradually getting higher and the number of the patients having oriental-medicine treatment and compliance is decreasing. Conclusions : More studies about objectification of oriental medicine need to precede any other studies. Then, it is thought to be necessary to rebuild cooperative relationships between oriental & western medicine through systematic research and political supports and to establish firm foundations of oriental medicine.

There was a significant difference in the degree of initial palsy and degree of palsy after 3weeks from onset according to the existence of Post Auricular Pain. However, a statistically significant difference was not shown in the period of time until initial treatment, The time of initial recovery, (H-B), The period from onset to recovey, ENoG value. Conclusions : Based on the above results, prognosis of Bell's palsy was affected by degree of initial palsy, time of initial recovery and existence of recovery after 3weeks from onset.
The environment surrounding oriental medical' doctors made change in accordance with changes of the society to make change of the doctors' ethics. In particular, some of practitioners made light of patients to let people distrust all of the medical professions. To improve such a situation, oriental medical doctors' ethics should be examined historically and philosophically. This study examined the literatures of Oriental medicine on oriental medical doctors' ethics to investigate difference of medical ethics between the Western medicine and the Oriental medicine and to suggest a way promoting oriental medical doctors' ethical consciousness. The ethics of the literatures of Oriental medicine might be classified into the two, in other words, 'medical technology' and 'mental attitude'. 'Medical technology' laid emphasis upon not only a lot of researches on Oriental medicine but also doing best to give patients medical treatment carefully. 'Mental attitude' laid emphasis upon keeping 'humanity(仁心)' thinking much of patients not to pursue excessive profits. To recover ethical consciousness, not only 'reinforced school education' but also 'reinforced legal regulation' was required. And, oriental medical doctors, nongovernmental organizations, common people and other social members were demanded to make efforts together to elevate oriental medical doctors' ethical consciousness.
Background : The safety of Korean herbal Medicine (KHM: prescribed herbal medicine by doctors of traditional Korean medicine) is an important issue in Korea. Although both fields. western medicine and traditional Korean medicine. have been studied on the safety of herbs and KHM, their results were not concordance with each other. Objectives : This study aims to review the influence of KHM on liver function in Korean literature systematically. Additionally, we tried to estimate the change of data of liver function test (LFT) and the incidence of liver injury (LI) after the use of KHM. Methods : Systematic literature searches were performed on 4 major databases of Korea from their inception to May 2008. Screening and selection of the studies and the extraction of data were performed independently by two authors. There were no restrictions on the types of publication including grey literatures. Results : Forty studies were included. Only sixteen studies were performed prospectively and fifteen studies collected data from outpatients. Only 8 studies reported the occurrence of LI after the use of KHM. Nineteen cases of LI showed no or mild symptoms and the elevation of LFT was not high. All of LI patients used conventional western drug and KHM concomitantly. and causality of LI was not assessed properly. The incidence of LI related to the use of KHM was estimated as 0.59%-0.76% from all data of these studies. The conflicting results were shown on the change of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total bilirubin (TB) after the use of KHM. Conclusions : KHM might be a minor cause of LI in Korea. However the results are not strongly supported as enough to make the safety issue clear because of the limitations of original studies. More rigorous studies are required for answering the safety issue of KHM with the cooperative investigation of both fields of Korean traditional medicine and western medicine.
Background: Herpes Zoster Oticus, which can be caused from infection by Varicella-zoster virus, is known to be expected poor prognosis, since it has higher possibility of complete injury of facial nerve. Conservative therapy of the Western medicine is effective on the treatment for the herpes zoster and pain. However, its effectiveness on the facial verve palsy has not been proven. Objective : This study was performed to evaluate the treatment of oriental medicine and an analyze prognosis of the facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus. Methods : This retrospctive study was conducted to observe the clinical manifestation of Herpes Zoster Oticus, and the result of electrical diagnostic study on the patients with the facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus who were diagnosed and treated at the Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion in Kyung Hee Oriental Medical Hospital. Results : 1. According to the six clinical types of Herpes Zoster Oticus, the patients in this study can be grouped as 7 cases of the type II, 2 cases of the type V, and one case of the type IV and the type VI. 2. The shorter the period from onset to the first visit to a hospital, the prognosis of facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus was the better. 3. According to the follow up study, the H-B grades of all cases were improved. 4. According to the follow up study, the result of electrical diagnostic study was improved. Conclusions : We found in our study that the treatment of oriental medicine, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and aroma therapy, helps the recovery of facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus. The further clinical study about the more cases of facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus and comparative study between the group of oriental medicine and that of western medicine are needed.
