  • Marine environment has been polluted and damaged by many sources such as industrial waste, natural seepage, oil spill and offshore production etc. Among them, oil spill from oil tankers is one of most harmful sources to marine lives as its input amount is huge at a limited area for short period. In Korea, the port of Yeosu is known to be very vulnerable to oil spill with large amount of petroleum transported across the harbour. In this regards, the author analyzed and reviewed marine environment and appropriate response to marine oil spill at this area. For these purposes, oceanographic and meteorologic features as well as regional characteristics of harbor facilities, shipping routes, marine traffic and fisheries were investigated, also traffic densities were analyzed in order to check marine accident probabilities making direct observations for 72 hours visual1y and by portable radar.

  • A newly recorded species Caprella mutica Schurin, 1935 belonging to the family Caprellidae Leach, 1814 was collected from the East Sea, Korea. Caprella mutica is native to the north-east Asia but is a well-known cosmopolitan and invasive species in many areas. This species is morphologically highly similar to C. acanthogaster Mayer, 1890. However, it is distinguished from a combination of the characteristics of the head, pereonites 1-2, and gnathopod 2. In this study, the Korean C. mutica is fully illustrated based on the mature specimens and compared to C. acanthogaster.

  • The Japanese codling fish, Physiculus japonica (family Moridae) is recorded as new to the Korean fish fauna. The specimen was fished from the South-Eastern waters off Jeju Island, Korea in March 1999. Standard length of the specimen was 343.2 mm, with a thin barbel on ower jaw, 67 soft second dorsal rays, 71 soft anal rays and 12 lateral-line above scales. Identification key of this specimen as P. japonica in the family Moridae was teethless vomer, chin barbel and well-developed black ventral light organ located on the anterior of anus. We give a new Korean name Dol-dae-gu for P. japonica.

  • The remote sensing is powerful oceanographic tools not only for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) but also for various areas of oceanography. Thank to effort of Government and local authorities as well as active support of international institutions, many projects on the applied oceanography had and have been caring out in coastal and offshore waters of Vietnam sea. One of the modern methods which has been used in these project is ocean color remote sensing technique. This paper will present some preliminary results obtain from application of these techniques in study of coastal and offshore environment of Vietnam sea.

  • The activated sludge process is a commonly used method for terating sewage and waste waters. The process is chatacterized by a lack of measurement instrumentations and control goals that are not always clear and not well understood. In such process, fuzzy control concept may be able to be adapted, do this paper presents a design method for fuzzy controller based on a selected sub-rule set from the total rule set and a multivariable fuzzy reasoning algorithms. In order to achievesystematic and efficient control of the activated sludge process under a great deal of disiutbances and a variety of perfotmance characteristics, a top-level rule-based fuzzy controller os proposed which provises lower-controllers with the suitable set-points according tothe onput-output states of the process.

  • Recently, upwelling of anoxic bottom water mass have been frequently observed in northeast part of Tokyo Bay in Japan during summer to autumn. Since the colour of water surface becomes milkyblue or milkygeen, the upwelling phenomenon Is called 'Blue Tide'. The data analysis of field surveys during 'Blue Tide' appearance have been performed for understanding the physical features of the 'Blue Tide' phenomena In Tokyo Bay. It becomes clear that (1) the formation of the anoxic bottom water correlates well with the temperature difference between the surface and bottom waters, (21 there are two necessary conditions for generating 'Blue Tide': that Is, strong stratincation and off-shore wind. The strong southwest(on-shored wand before the 'Blue Tide' appearance may play an iniportant role to make the striancation strengthen. When these conditions are larger and the northeast or east-northeast (off-shored wind stronger than S ifs blows In succession, the 'Blue Tide' upwelling appears at the head of Tokyo Bay.

  • The causative organism of red tied occurred mainly in embayments along southern coast of Korea mostly composes of dinoflagellate species. Among them Genus Prorocentrum is predominant in Masan Bay and it has already reported eight Prorocentrum species from this area. The authors have identified five species of Genus Prorocentrum during the year of 1982 in the surveyed area and each species was described by means of the observation with light microscope as well as scanning electron microscopy. An additional species, p.dentatum is new to Korean waters.

  • The Dongjung Au-Ag-Cu mine area was seriously contaminated with As and heavy metals-Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb and Zn etc. Those elements were highly accumulated in plants grown at farmland as well as farmland soil. Stream waters and groundwater which has been used as drinking water around the mine site contain high levels of heavy metals, especially As. As a result of human health risk assessment using EHS(Extraction of Heavy metals in Stomach and Small intestine) test for bioaccessible contents of heavy metals, there is a potential of cancer and adverse effects on human health for the residents of the mine area.

  • We investigated the distribution of the marine cladoceran resting eggs in the intertidal sediments of Gomso Bay, Korea and compared the data with those in the subtidal sediments. The abundance of the eggs in the top 6cm of the sediments was higher than that in the other depths. The abundances of the eggs in seaward intertidal sediments below mean sea level (MSL) were higher than those in the sediments over MSL, but were not significantly different from those in the subtidal sediments. The distribution of the resting eggs of cladocerans in the intertidal sediments was affected by the grain-size and moisture content of sediments. The results of the present study suggest that the intertidal sediments as well as the subtidal sediments are a potential egg bank which plays important roles in population dynamics of zooplankton in coastal waters, in particular, recruitment of eggs into plankton.

  • In recent years the accumulation of heavy metals in microorganisms, the biosorption has received much attention because of various environmental application. We have been to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina, for the removal of heavy metal ions in industrial and polluted waters. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions, the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10min., and optimum pH and reaction temperature were 4.5-5 and 30-35$\circ $C, respectively. Under the above conditions, the maximum amounts of Pb, Cu, and Cd adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina were 107.6mg/g, 78.0mg/g, and 65.6mg/g, and three values were 1.45, 1.56, and 1.26 times higher than those adsorbed to the unit weight of activated carbon under same conditions. The adsorption kinetics of Pb, Cu, and Cd were fitted very well to the Freundlich isotherm and BET isotherm. Biosorption experiments in single ion solutions and binary ions solutions showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than in binary ions solutions.
