Development Trend of Sour Resistant Linepipe Steel and its Sour Characteristics in Welded Joints (내(耐)Sour 라인파이프 강재의 개발동향 및 용접부 Sour특성)

  • Oil and gas fields were left unexploited which deemed too deep and sour. New developing markets are emerging in this part and pipe manufacturers need demanding requirements in the combination of sour service requirements with heavier wall thickness required to cope with increasing water depths. Whilst, the strength and fracture toughness needed to meet the strict requirements In order to deliver the optimum sour properties in the final pipe, attention needs to be paid to each stage throughout the process from steel making. The main key during steel making is strengthening, securing mechanical properties and suppression of center segregation by adding proper chemical elements and controlling water cooling and plate rolling. Additionally in welding, it is required to prevent HAZ softening by high heat input during welding of heavy thick pipes and hydrogen assisted cracking in high strength steels with hard phases. In this paper, we introduce markets of sour resistant linepipe steels and in response to this, have a look in the development trend of sour resistant linepipe steels and its sour characteristics in welded joints.

Behavior of Global Bending Distortion of Hatch-cover in Container Carrier during Fabrication Process (컨테이너 운반선 해치-커버 제작시 전 굽힘 변형 거동에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the control method of the global bending distortion caused by fabrication process of hatch-cover in a container ship. In order to do it, the transitional behavior of global bending distortion in the deck of hatch-cover during fabrication process was measured by 3-dimensional measuring instrument. From the results, the principal factor controlling the global bending distortion was identified as the bending moment associated with the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the change of the centroid axis of hatch-cover in each fabrication process. Therefore, in this study, with the predictive equations of the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the simplified thermo elastic method, the predictive method for the global bending distortion was established and verified by comparing with the measured result. Based on the results, the amount of reverse bending distortion of main stiffeners was determined to prevent the global bending distortion of hatch-cover.

Bead Shape and Conditions of Friction Stir Processing to Improve Fatigue Strength (피로강도 향상을 위한 표면마찰교반법의 가공조건 및 비드형상)

  • Burr grinding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) dressing, ultrasonic impact treatment, and peening are used to improve fatigue life in steel structures. These methods improve the fatigue life of weld joints by hardening the weld toe, by improving the bead shape, and by creating the compressive residual stress. In this study, a new post-weld treatment method improving the weld bead shape and metal structure at the welding zone using Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a welding process, is proposed to enhance fatigue life. For that, a pin-shaped tool and processing condition employing Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is established through experiments. Experimental results revealed that fatigue life is improved by around 50% compared to as-welded fatigue specimens by reducing the stress concentration at the weld toe and by generating a metal structure finer than that of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).

A Study on the Distortion Control Characteristics of the STS 304 Multi-pass Butt Weldment by the Tensioning Method (인장하중법에 따른 STS 304 다층 맞대기 용접부의 변형 제어 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the control technology of the welding distortion caused by Auto NG-GTA welding process at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment. For it, heat input model for Auto NG-GTA welding process was established and verified by measuring temperature change and molten pool shape at the bead-on-plate weldment. With heat input model developed, the effect of the tension load on the amount of welding distortion at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment was evaluated using the thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis. In accordance with FEA results, the angular distortion and transverse shrinkage sharply decreased with an increase in tension load. This result indicates that tensioning method was verified as a countermeasure against the welding distortion of STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment.

Heat Source Modeling and Study on the Effect of Thickness on Residual Stress Distribution in Electron Beam Welding

  • In this study, the volumetric heat source in electron beam welding (EBW) is modeled through finite element method taking advantage of ABAQUS software package. Since this welding method is being applied in plates with different thicknesses and also considering that residual stresses reduce the strength of these weldments, the effect of thickness in the distribution and magnitude of residual stresses after welding is studied. Regarding the vast application of Inconel 706 super-alloy in aerospace industries, this material was selected in the current research. In order to validate the finite element model, the obtained results were compared to those of other researchers in this area, and good agreement was observed. The simulation results revealed that increase in the plate thickness leads to increase in the residual stresses. In addition heat treatment in the base metal (before welding) increases the residual stresses significantly.

  • Gas metal arc welding(GMAW) uses a continuously fed electrode as a filler metal. The arc is shielded from atmospheric contamination by an inert gas active or inert/active gas mixture delivered through the welding gun and cable assembly. The recent research topics on $CO_2$ are welding machines are focused mainly on the reduction method of generated spatter by using new type consumable electrode metal or inverter control method. The various current waveform control methods have been researched for welding performance improvement. Until now current waveform control methods reduce to spatter occurred by instantaneous short circuiting,. but these methods is drawback that no reduce spatter occurred by arc reignition. In this paper the previous arc reignition current control method for welding performance improvement of inverter arc welding machine is studied and compared the various current control methods with the previous arc reignition current control method.

  • In shipbuilding, hull assemblies are manufactured by welding. The thermal deformation caused by the welding produces shape deformation. Counter-deformed design methods have been used in shipyards to cope with the weld-induced deformation of ship assembles. Finite element methods (FEMs) are frequently used to estimate welding distortion in the counter-deformed design. For the estimation of welding distortion, producing uniform rectangular elements is required to enter thermal loads on the welding line and obtain accurate analysis results. In this paper, a new automatic mesh generation method is proposed for prediction of welding deformation in FEM. Meshes are constructed for test cases to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed mesh generation method.

Research on the weld quality estimation system using fuzzy expert system (퍼지 전문가 시스템을 활용한 용접 품질 예측 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • Weld bead shape is an important measure for evaluation of weld quality. Many welding parameters have influence on the weld bead shape. The quantitative relationship between welding parameters and bead shape, however, is not determined yet because of their high complexity and many unknown factors. Fuzzy expert system is an advanced expert system which uses fuzzy rules and approximate reasoning. It is a vert useful tool for welding technology because is can process rationally the uncertain and inexact information such as the welding information. In this paper, the empirical and the qualitative relationship between welding parameters and bead shape are analyzed and represented by fuzzy rules. They are converted to the quantitative relationship by use of approximate reasoning of fuzzy expert system. Weld bead shape is estimated from the welding parameters using fuzzy expert system. The result of comparison between measured values of weld bead by welding experiments and the estimates values by fuzzy expert system shows a good consistancy.

Study on the Simultaneous Control of the Seam Tracking and Leg Length in a Horizontal Fillet Welding Part 2: Seam Tracking

  • For the horizontal fillet welding with one plate in a vertical position, there will be a higher tendency of weld metal falling down rather than for the butt-welding in flat position. Such phenomenon could bring about the overlap or deflection of weld pool, and consequently induce the poor mechanical strength of weldments. Therefore, a precise position control of welding torch in conjunction with the weld qualify plays an important role in welding robot applications. In the present study, an experimental method was proposed for deriving a mathematical model between the leg length and the welding conditions. Finally, an algorithm was proposed for weld seam tracking and improvement of the weld quality. The reliability of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithm can be very effective for tracking the weld line and simultaneously achieving the sound weld bead.
