Reduction of weld distortions and increase in productivity are some of the major goals of the shipbuilding industry. To address these issues, many researchers have attempted to apply new welding processes. In the shipbuilding industry, steel is the candidate material of choice owing to its good weldability. However, conventional welding techniques are not feasible for avoiding welding problems. Tip-rotating arc welding is one of the high-efficiency welding process that has several advantages, such as high welding speed, high melting rate, low heat input, and less distortion. The present study investigates the influence of the welding variables on the weld characteristics of tip-rotating arc welding. Welding was performed using EH36 as the base metal and SM-70s as the filler metal, which are widely used in shipbuilding. Basic experiments were conducted to understand the effects of the major welding variables, such as welding and tip-rotating speeds. The distortion and mechanical properties of the optimal welding conditions were used to evaluate the tip-rotating arc welding performance. Consequently, the feasibility of the tip-rotating arc welding process for joining steel components was investigated, so that the optimized welding conditions could be applied directly to ship body welding to enhance the quality of the welded joints.
Friction welding is a very useful joining process to weld metals which have axially symmetric cross section. In this paper, for the friction welding with tube-to-tube shape, the feasibility of industry application was determined using analyzing mechanical properties of weld and optimized welding variables was suggested. In order to accomplish this object, rotating speed, friction heating pressure, and friction heating time were selected as the major process variables and the experiment was performed in three levels of each parameter. Weld characteristic was investigated in terms of weld shape and metal loss, and 7mm of metal loss was regarded as the optimal metal loss. By tensile test, tensile strength and yielding strength was measured and fracture was occurred at base metal. In order to optimize the welding condition, fitness function was defined with respect to metal loss and yielding strength and the fitness values for each welding condition could be calculated in experimental range. Consequently, we set the optimal welding condition as the point which had maximum value of fitness function. As the result of this paper the optimal welding variables could be suggested as rotating speed was 1300 rpm, friction heating pressure was 15 MPa, and friction heating time was 10 sec.
Joining thin aluminum alloy is difficult using most wilding techniques. Many of problems associated burn-through by the high heat input Common welding techniques are TIG, MIG, and MIG-PULSE welding. The VP-GMAW provides more control of the heat balance in the voiding arc by taking advantage of the different arc characteristics obtained with each of the two polarities. In this paper, we proposed new VP_GMA Welding method by control DSP 320C32, and the characteristic and experiment result-voltage, current, welding bead. penentraion by this method are presented

Advancements in silicon phase control (SCR) technologies provide an arc welding power supply that has the capability to allow the alteration of the Alternating Current (AC) welding output. These technologies provide a square wave output involving sixteen frequency selections and multiple balance selections. While an AC out put is known to minimize magnetic disturbances associate with Direct Current (DC), the potentials of a non-sinusoidal waveform have not been explored. The focus of the paper is to determine the effects that the frequency and balance of an AC wave form output will have upon a high speed Submerge Arc (SAW) application. The test matrix of the project includes welding .250" steel plate. Joint type is square groove with a travel speed of 65 IPM. Each of the weld parameters was held constant, only the frequency and/or balance were altered between welds. Each frequency/balance combination involved three-gap spacing. Upon completion of the welds the bead profiles were measured and recorded. A relationships/trends were observed with various frequency and balance values. Optimum frequency and balance values were found for the .250" square groove application which permit consistent weld sizing, ease of slag removal, and minimal plate distortion.
In this paper, the finite element method was used for the flow and strength analysis of aluminum alloy under friction stir welding. The simulations were carried out using Sysweld s/w, and the modeling of the sheet was executed using Unigraphics NX6 s/w. The welding variables for the analysis were the shoulder diameter, rotating speed, and welding speed of the tool. Additionally, a three-way factorial design method was applied to confirm the effect of the welding variables on the flow and strength analysis with variance analysis. From these results, the rotating speed had the greatest influence on the maximum temperature, and the maximum temperature was $578.84{\pm}12.72$ at a confidence interval of 99%. The greater the rotating speed and shoulder diameter, the greater the difference between maximum and minimum temperature. Furthermore, the shoulder diameter had the largest influence on von Mises stress, and the von Mises stress was $184.54{\pm}12.62$ at a confidence interval of 99%. In addition to the increased shoulder diameter, welding speed, and rotating speed of the tool increased the von Mises stress.
This study was aimed to evaluate the quality of flash welded joints and optimize the welding process for flash butt welding of 780MPa grade high strength steel. And then the relationship between the welding process variables and the joint quality would be established. The effect of process variables between flashing and upsetting process was elucidated. Microstructure observation of the joint indicated that the decarburized band was mainly changed with upsetting process. Width of HAZ was also related to the upsetting conditions rather than the flashing conditions. Generally maximum hardness at HAZ was correlated with Ceq of steel and the empirical relationship was obtained to estimate the HAZ properties. Tensile elongation at the joint was usually decreased with increasing the initial clamping distance. Investigation of fracture surface after tensile and bending tests reveal that the origin of cracking at the joint was oxide inclusions composed of $SiO_2$, MnO, $Al_2O_3$, and/or FeO. The amount of inclusions was dependent on the composition ratio of Mn/Si in steel. If this ratio was above 4, the amount of inclusions was low and then the resistance to cracking at the joint was enough to maintain the joint performance. It was obtained that the flashing process influenced the conditions for the energy input to establish uniform or nonuniform molten layer, while the upsetting conditions influenced the joint strength. Heat input variable during flashing process was also discussed with the joint properties.

They were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the various welding heat input models, such as ramp heat input function and lumped pass models. Through the parametric studies, thermal-mechanical modeling sensitivity to the ramp function and lumping techniques was determined by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. The kinetics for residual stress formation during welding can be developed by iteration of various proposed mechanisms in the parametric study. A ramp heat input function was developed to gradually apply the heat flux with variable amplitude to the model. This model was used to avoid numerical convergence problems due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone. Additionally, it enables the model to include the effect of a moving arc in a two-dimensional plane. The ramp function takes into account the variation in the out of plane energy flow in a 2-D model as the arc approaches, travels across, and departs from each plane under investigation. A lumped pass model was developed to reduce the computation cost in the analysis of multipass welds. Several weld passes were assumed as one lumped pass in this model. Recommendations were provided about ramp lumping techniques and the optimum number of weld passes that can be combined into a single thermal input.

Residual stress by welding should be reduced because that decreases the reliability on strength of welded structure. The reason is that the total stiffness of structure decreases by non-linear behavior of weldment under external load. The release of residual stress by mechanical loading and unloading is often performed in the fabrication of box structure for steel bridge. The proper degree of loading and unloading is significant at release method of residual stress by mechanical loading because that degree is changed by material and geometric shape of welded structure. Therefore, the simulation model that could exactly analyze the release of residual stress by mechanical loading is to be necessary. This simulation model should be established on the based of variable and accurate measurement data. In this study, the non-linear behavior of weldments under external loading and unloading, such as the decrease and increase of structure stiffness, was investigated by monitoring of nominal stress and strain. Tensile loading and unloading test under variable load was performed and the proper degree of stress relaxation was measured by sectioning technique using strain gauge.
In this study reports experiments were conducted to determine the quality of weld beads of different materials, Al and Cu. Among the lasers used to make battery cells for electric vehicles, non-destructive testing was performed using deep learning to determine the quality of beads welded with the ARM laser. Deep learning was performed using AlexNet algorithm with a convolutional neural network structure. The results of quality identification were divided into good and bad, and the result value was derived that all the results were in agreement with 94% or more. Overall, the best welding quality was obtained in the experiment for the fixed ring beam output/variable center beam output, in the case of the fixed beam (ring beam) 500W and variable beam (center beam) 1,050W; weld bead failure was seldom observed. The tensile force test to confirm the reliability of welding reported an average tensile force of 2.5kgf/mm or more in all sections.
The Gas Metal Arc(GMA) welding, called Metal Inert Gas(MIG) welding, has been an important component in manufacturing industries. A key technology for robotic welding processes is seam tracking system, which is critical to improve the welding quality and welding capacities. The objectives of this study were to develop the intelligent and cost-effective algorithms for image processing in GMA welding which based on the laser vision sensor. Welding images were captured from the CCD camera and then processed by the proposed algorithm to track the weld joint location. The proposed algorithms that commonly used at the present stage were verified and compared to obtain the optimal one for each step in image processing. Finally, validity of the proposed algorithms was examined by using weld seam images obtained with different welding environments for image processing. The results proved that the proposed algorithm was quite excellent in getting rid of the variable noises to extract the feature points and centerline for seam tracking in GMA welding and could be employed for general industrial application.
