A study on the residual stresses in circumferential welds of the pipes (파이프 원주방향 용접부의 잔류응력 연구)

  • The existence of residual stress in the circumferential butt welded pipes is one of the most important problems concerning stress corrosion cracking in service. In this paper, the residual stress distributions in three kinds of circumferential butt welded pipes were measured by the hole drilling strain gage method and calculation using finite element method is performed and its results are compared with the experiments. At the inner surface of the pipe region near the center line of welding is under high tensile residual stress. However, as the distance from the center line of welding increases, the tensile component decreases and finally becomes compressive residual stress at region far away from the center line of welding. The longitudinal residual stress at the outer surface is compressive regardless of the diameter of pipe and the circumferential stress is changed rom compressive to tensile as pipe diameter increases. The results also demonstrate that the residual stress is mainly caused by self restraint bending force in the pipe welding.

Prediction of Heating-line Positions for Line Heating Process by Using a Neural Network (신경회로망을 이용한 선상가열공정의 가열선 위치선정에 관한 연구)

  • Line heating is an effective and economical process for forming flat metal plates into three-dimensional shapes for plating of ships. Because the nature of the line heating process is a transient thermal process, followed by a thermo elastic plastic stress field, predicting deformed shapes of plate is very difficult and complex problem. In this paper, neural network model o3r solving the inverse problem of metal forming is proposed. The backpropagation neural network systems for determining line-heating positions from object shape of plate are reported in this paper. Two cases of the network are constructed-the first case has 18 lines which have different positions and directions and the second case has 10 parallel heating lines. The input data are vertical displacements of plate and the output data are selected heating lines. The train sets of neural network are obtained by using an analytical solution that predicts plate deformations in line heating process. This method shows the feasibility that the neural network can be used to determine the heating-line positions in line heating process.

Development of Non-Scallop Block Joint Welding Method (논-스캘럽 블록 조인트 용접법 개발)

  • A weld scallop is a small quadrant or half circle type hole installed in the weld line cross area for easy welding operation. Many types of T-bars with a scallop can be welded in a block assembly stage in shipbuilding. The difficulties arise from the fact that scallops are to be filled by build-up welding after welding of the cross line is complete. In this study, a non-scallop block joint welding method was developed using special type CBM (ceramic backing material). The wedge shaped CBM was devised to insert a CBM into just the V groove of weld line cross area without weld scallop. A saw-toothed shape was adopted for easy cutting of the unnecessary part in the CBM fitting process. The applicability of the developed method was verified through welding experiments based on the yard welding conditions.

  • Welding automation is one of the most important manufacturing issues in shipbuilding in order to lower the cost, increase the quality, and avoid the labor problems. Generally the on-line teaching is utilized on the robot that is used in the welding automation system, but it requires much effort and long time to program. Especially, if the system is composed of more than two cooperating robots, it demands much more skill to program the robots' motion. Thus, a convenient programming tool is required for efficient utilization of welding automation system. In this study, a convenient programming tool is developed for welding automation in which gantry-robot system is used. The system is composed of a gantry transporter and two robots mounted on the gantry to cover the wide work range in the ship building application. As a programming tool, an off-line programming software based on PC is developed. By using this software, field operator does not need to concern about coding of task programs for three control units, one is for gantry and two are for robots. The task programs are automatically generated by assembling the program modules in database according to geometrical information of workpiece and welding condition, which become the only concern of field operator, The feasibility of the generated programs can be verified via a motion simulator previously to on-line running.

  • This paper presents a new method of segmenting a one-dimensional signal into a set of features of type(line, Vee-groove, Lap-joint and etc.), A set of requirements for the segmentation process result from the application area, which in this case are laser welding, GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding), SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) and high speed tack welding.   • During laser welding, a laser induced matal vapour and plasuma is formed. The plasma shows strong fluctuation combined with acoustic sound emission. On-line monitoring of the process is possible by measuring and analysing the plasma and acoustic sound emission. This paper introduce the method of on line process monitoring in the laser beam welding and analysis being monitoring signal. The results show the complementary information on the process.

Optimization of Process Parameters Using a Genetic Algorithm for Process Automation in Aluminum Laser Welding with Filler Wire (용가 와이어를 적용한 알루미늄 레이저 용접에서 공정 자동화를 위한 유전 알고리즘을 이용한 공정변수 최적화)

  • Laser welding is suitable for welding to the aluminum alloy sheet. In order to apply the aluminum laser welding to production line, parameters should be optimized. In this study, the optimal welding condition was searched through the genetic algorithm in laser welding of AA5182 sheet with AA5356 filler wire. Second-order polynomial regression model to estimate the tensile strength model was developed using the laser power, welding speed and wire feed rate. Fitness function for showing the performance index was defined using the tensile strength, wire feed rate and welding speed which represent the weldability, product cost and productivity, respectively. The genetic algorithm searched the optimal welding condition that the wire feed rate was 2.7 m/min, the laser power was 4 kW and the welding speed was 7.95 m/min. At this welding condition, fitness function value was 137.1 and the estimated tensile strength was 282.2 $N/mm^2$.

  • Recently, welding technology of nonferrous metals which were difficult to implement by arc welder has become available through digitalization of arc welding machine. Among them, the welding quality improvement of aluminum welding is very noticeable. These results increase the arc stability by controlling arc current and voltage waveform precisely, and control wire feed speed by synchronizing with arc current which the feed rate of filler wire is controlled by a precise motor control of servomotor and not by a simple constant speed feeding. Not only through the hardware digitalization of arc welding machine but also through advance of software of arc welding, it became possible to implement a certain level of welding quality by a simple operation. These led to CMT welding process implementation which requires low heat input than current arc welding and highly increased the applicability of the aluminum welding.

  • This paper is concerned with development of digital assembly cell. Automotive industries, try to find out new welding technologies to replace the existing spot welding which is not appropriate anymore. Because of many advantages like good accessibility, welding quality and fast welding speed, laser welding seems the most appropriate solution for automobile manufactures. To apply this technology to welding of car body, experiments must be conducted according to material, geometry and layer in welding area. Based on the data of these experiments, the laser welding process and the quality of stitches are identified. And then, the comparison between the requirements of welding and the potential of equipments allows selecting the best equipments. By using the digital manufacturing, the configurations of laser welding cell are carried out. After all, the optimal laser welding cell is chosen by the evaluation of alternative cells with technical and organizational criteria.
