This study was to evaluate GMA welding characteristics of the A15083-O aluminum alloy according to the shield gas mixing ratio and heat input change. The GMA welding of the base metal was carried out with flour different shield gas mixing ratios(Ar100%+He0%, Ar67%+He33%, Ar50%+He50%, and Ar33%+He67%). Regarding the if1uence on the bead shape of the shield gas mixing ratio and heat input, the bead width was greatest in Ar100%+He0% mixture. But the penetration depth and area were greatest in Ar33%+He67% mixture considering that the lower Ax gas ratio, the higher bead depth and area. Also, dilution was also best in the shield gas mixing ratio. The size and number of deflects were least in Ar33%+He67% mixture. Higher He gas ratio resulted in less deflects detected by the radiographic inspection.
In order to make clear the physical relation among the arc plasma, the anode heat transfer and the weld penetration, the results of experimental measurements of temperatures of arc plasma, the distributions of heat input and current on the anode and the weld penetration were presented The experimental results showed that the electron temperature above the anode and current and heat input density on the anode was dominated by the position of the cathode. Furthermore, it was showed that electron temperature of arc plasma was dominated by the cathode shape. These results were related with the results of the welded penetration measurements. As a result, it was showed that the electron temperature above the anode and current density distribution on the anode decided the heat input density distribution on the anode and that the heat input density on the anode remarkably dominated the size of the weld penetration in argon GTA welding process. Furthermore, it was suggested that the cathode played the important role in the determination of the weld penetration in argon GTA welding process.
Copper and its alloy had been used widely because of its pronouncing characteristics on their high thermal and electrical conductivity. Various fusion welding methods, such as SMAW, SAW, GTAW, GMAW, Electroslag welding amd so on are applied to weld copper and its alloy. But fusion welding of copper has so many welding problems. THe most serious problems were poor penetration amd high thermal contration stress due to its high thermal conductivity and porosity could be formed by rapid cooling rate of fusion welding. In order to avoid such fusion welding problems, preheating, peering and heat treatment must be applied to obtain sound weld joint of copper. But preheating induce another welding problem such as grain coarsening of weld heat affected zone. This grain coarsening reduces ductility and strength of weld joint. In this view of point, friction welding of copper is triedm to obtain sound weld joint of copper by reducing metallurgical problems. This study introduced new concept of heat input for evaluating the friction weldability of copper. As a result, weldability of copper could be evaluated by this new concept of heat input.
This study was investigated on the impact toughness and microstructure of welded metal and heat affected zone for Hi Nitrogen TiN Steel. With welding procedures, welding heat input applied were 30, 79 and 264 kJ/cm. TiN steel has shown very small prior austenite grain size for all the welding heat input applied, which was considered to result from the effect of TiN particles. In case of single SAW and EGW welding, the dilution rate of base metal into the weld was not high, resulting that there were no significant effects of base metal chemical composition on the mechanical properties of welds. However, TSAW with double Ypreparation carried very high dilution rate so that TiN steel has impaired the toughness of weld metal because N content in the weld was increased through the dilution of base metal.
The mechanical and microstructural properties in high heat input welds of home-made SM 50 high strength steels were investigated and compared with the manual shielded metal arc welds. Also, the fracture toughnesses of the simulated weld-bonds with various thermal cycles were quantatively examined in order to provide the basic data for further development of the high strength steels for high input welding. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) The embrittlement degree and the coarse grained region in high heat input welds appear to be extraordinarily large compared with the manual shielded metal arc welds, while the difference in change of nicrohardness is not so large in both welds. (2) The embrittleness in high heat input weld-bonds is mainly affected by the size of coarse grain rather than the microstructure. (3) The fracture toughness in high heat input weld-bonds can be improved by controlling the cooling rate from 800.deg.C to 500.deg.C rapidly.
During laser overlap welding of galvanized steel sheets, explosion of weld pool by the high pressure zinc vapor induces weld defects like porosity and blowhole. In this study, laser 2-pass welding was implemented to prevent the weld defects. Through the 1st pass welding, zinc layers on the faying surfaces were removed when proper heat input was applied. Excessive heat input could result in explosion even during the 1st pass welding and insufficient heat input could not remove enough region of zinc layer for the 2nd pass welding. Coating weights of $45g/m^2$ and $60g/m^2$ were considered and for both cases sound welds without weld defects could be achieved. In spite of 2-pass welding, softening of weld and heat affected zone was not observed and Zn coating was not diluted into the weld metal.
Joining of grey cast iron by fusion welding has much difficulties for its extremely low ductility and low toughness because of the flake form of the graphite. And the brittle microstructure, i.e. ledeburite may be formed during fusion welding by its rapid cooling rates. By these kinds of welding problem, preheat and post heat treatment temperature must be increased to avoid weld crack or welding problems. In order to avoid these fusion welding problem, friction welding of cast iron was carried out for improving joint soundness, establishing friction welding variables. There is no factor for evaluating friction weldability in continuous drive type friction welding. In this point of view, this study proposed the parameters for calculating friction weld heat input. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. There was a close relationship between tensile strength and flash appearance of friction welded joint. 2. Tensile strength was decreased and flash was severely oxidized as increasing frictional heating time. 3. As increased forging pressure $P_2$, flash had a large crack and tensile strength was decreased. 4. As powdered graphite by rotational frictional force induced flat surface and hindered plastic flow of metal, tensile strength of welded joint was decreased. 5. Heat input for continuous drive type friction welding could be calculated by the factors of $P_1$, $P_2$ and upset distance(${\delta}$).

This study experimentally reveals the influence of welding on grade S690Q high strength steel (HSS) butt joints from both micro and macro levels. Total eight butt joints, taking plate thickness and welding heat input as principal factors, were welded by shielded metal arc welding. In micro level, the microstructure transformations of the coarse grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ), the fine grain heat affected zone (FGHAZ) and the tempering zone occurred during welding were observed under light optical microscopy, and the corresponding mechanical performance of those areas were explored by micro-hardness tests. In macro level, standard tensile tests were conducted to investigate the impacts of welding on tensile behaviour of S690Q HSS butt joints. The test results showed that the main microstructure of S690Q HSS before welding was tempered martensite. After welding, the original microstructure was transformed to granular bainite in the CGHAZ, and to ferrite and cementite in the FGHAZ. For the tempering zone, some temper martensite decomposed to ferrite. The performed micro-hardness tests revealed that an obvious "soft layer" occurred in HAZ, and the HAZ size increased as the heat input increased. However, under the same level of heat input, the HAZ size decreased as the plate thickness increased. Subsequent coupon tensile tests found that all joints eventually failed within the HAZ with reduced tensile strength when compared with the base material. Similar to the size of the HAZ, the reduction of tensile strength increased as the welding heat input increased but decreased as the thickness of the plate increased.
Narrow gap welding has many advantages over conventional V-grooved butt welding such as high productivity, small deformation and improved mechanical property of joints. With narrower groove gap, less arc heat input is expected will all the other advantages of narrow gap welding. The main defects of narrow gap welding include the lack of root fusion, convex bead surface and irregular surface, all of which have negative effects on the next welding pass. This paper suggests an up-and-down torch oscillation for ultra narrow gap welding with gap size of 5mm and investigates the proper welding conditions to fulfill the reliable and high welding quality. First, GMA welding model was suggested for ultra narrow gap welding system with Halmoy's model referenced for wire melting modeling. And the arc length in ultra narrow gap was defined. Secondly, based on the experimental results of up-and-down torch oscillation welding, phase shift of current and wire extension length were simulated for varying oscillation frequency to show that weld the bead shape in ultra narrow gap welding can be predicted. As the result, it was confirmed that reliable weld quality in ultra narrow gap welding can be achieved with up-and-down torch oscillation above 15Hz due to its ability to provide uniform heat input along the sidewall of gap.
The experimental and numerical study has been conducted on the sleeve repair welding of API 5L X65 pipeline. SMAW and GTAW were applied to weld the sleeve. The macrostructure and hardness of repair welds have been examined. The finite element analysis of the multi-pass sleeve-fillet welding has been conducted to validate the experiment and investigate the effects of in-service welding conditions. The effect of gas flow rate on the hydrogen cracking was investigated. The effect of internal pressure on residual stresses and plastic strain was investigated. The allowable heat input was predicted considering the maximum temperature of inner surface of pipe and cooling rate at CGHAZ.
