  • Pure titanium and its alloys have good formability, excellent corrosion resistance and high strength to weight ratios. Therefore, it has been using to heat exchangers, offshore plants, sports equipments, and etc. As broad as its application fields, it also increases welding locations. Conventional GTAW and GMAW are very popular welding methods of titanium, but it has a high heat input and wide HAZ. It has a possibility of inducing Stress Corrosion Cracking. So, laser welding method has been using to get reliable welds by reducing heat input. Weld beads change its color to silver, gold, brown, blue, and gray by shied conditions. And the closer to gray, the more oxidize, nitride and embrittlement. The most effective atom to embrittlement was nitrogen. And shield gas flow was not so effective over the constant flow rates. In this study, weld properties of the pure titanium were investigated by pulsed & CW Nd:YAG lasers and evaluated by various shield conditions. And It is observed that nitrogen is more effective to oxidation and embrittlement of titanium compared with oxygen by oxygen and nitrogen quantitative analysis.

  • Friction welding is welding method to use frictional heat of two material. A defect of friction welding is that create flash. The flash is part that must have cut after welding finished. But the welding part with flow gallery by friction welding can't cut flash. Therefore the welding part with flow gallery was designed with no effect in flow. In this research, decide the welding shape parameter of welding part with flow gallery and do friction welding analysis. In friction welding analysis, must input necessary S-S curve, friction coefficient by temperature change, upset pressure, RPM etc. According to analysis result, decided the optimal shape of welding part with no effect in flow.

  • High speed seam weldability of tin coated steels was investigated. Welding was performed by the laboratory wire seam welder that was equipped with process monitoring system Test results showed that increase in applied current and pressure reduced the total resistance across the welding electrodes. Lower and upper limits of welding current increased as the sheet thickness increased, while the acceptable welding condition range decreased. However, extremely low electrode pressure produced unstable welding condition range. The results also demonstrated that slower welding speeds widened the optimum welding heat input range.

  • Laser welding process is widely used in the industrial field due to its numerous advantages: a small heat affected zone(HAZ), deep penetration, high welding speed, ease of automation, single-pass thick section capability, enhanced design flexibility, and small distortion after welding. The objective of this research works is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as the welding fur metals with CW Nd:YAG lasers. The bead-on-plate and Lap welding experiments are carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the welding quality of the cross section, tensile stress behavior and the hardness of the welded part are investigated in comparison of the Nickel coated and Nickel uncoated S45C steel. As a result of experiment, nickel coated S45C Steel showed more even weld zone than Nickel uncoated counterpart upon lap welding. Also, it showed relatively small amount of internal defects and spatter, and Nickel coated S45C showed better weldability than Nickel uncoated S45C steel. The optimum welding process upon lap welding of Nickel coated S45C steel is when each laser power is 1900W; focal positions is -1mm; welding speed is $0.9{\sim}1.0m/min$. The heat input was $4.178{\sim}4.36{\times}103J/cm^2$.

  • To connect exterior reinforced concrete (RC) columns with the steel belt truss, the gusset plates are welded to the steel plates embedded in the RC column. Then, the concrete around an embedded plate is very likely to be damaged by the heat input from a long-time (6 to 48 hours) welding of the embedded and gusset plates at a joint between RC columns and steel belt truss. However, very few studies have assessed the concrete damage caused by the welding heat between embedded and gusset plates, and no clear onsite solution has been found. In this paper, experimental tests have been carried out on 4 full-scale specimen to analyze the effect of long-time (about 6 hours) onsite welding (1-side welding and 3-side welding) between a gusset plate and an embedded plate in high strength concrete with compressive strength of 55 MPa and 80 MPa on RC columns. The effect of the long-time welding heat of embedded and gusset plates, which are used in real high-rise building construction sites, on concrete is analyzed in terms of the following three items: 1) temperature distribution, 2) pattern and characteristics of cracks, and 3) effect of the cracks on the compressive strength of RC column. Based on the experimental results, even though the heat input up to about 150? from the long-time onsite welding on the high-strength concrete column for the joint could result in concrete cracks in a radial form, it is found that the welding cracks have no effect on the axial stiffness and strength of the concrete column.

  • Variable polarity (VP) arc welding is known as an effective solution for aluminum thanks to the cleaning effect, which means oxide removal, during the DCEP (direct current electrode positive) period. In this research, VP GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) is adopted for lap joint fillet welding of 3mm thickness 5052 aluminum alloy. Various welding currents and DCEP duty cycles are applied as welding conditions with a fixed welding speed to investigate the influence of DCEP characteristics on weld bead formation. Results show a tendency of higher heat input for higher DCEP duty cycle, which result does not follow conventional arc theory because it is known that DCEN (DC electrode negative) polarity is more efficient for heat input than is DCEP. This phenomenonhas recently been reported by several VP-GTA researchers and is still controversial because the mechanism of oxide removal is not yet clear except for the previous, well-known idea of "ion bombardment", which cannot explain the situation. Finally, proper usage conditions for VP-GTAW are suggested; then, further, related theoretical topics in the field of cathode physics are brieflyintroduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the distortion and the residual stress of GTA tubular welds between tube and head. In order to do it, the heat input model for GTA welding process was first developed by experiment and FE analyses. The welding distortion and the residual stress distribution of the tubular welds according to welding pass and various restraint degrees were evaluated by using FEA with the heat input model. From FEA results, it was found that the residual stress and the radial distortion at the weld toe of tube part decrease with a decrease in the number of welding pass. However, the maximum residual stresses in each direction of tubular welds are almost constant regardless of the external restraint degree. It was mainly due to the high internal restraint of the welds.

  • The Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSCC) resistance of structural steels is one of the critical concerns for the operators, material designers, and fabricators of oil-field equipment, especially treating sour gas (H2S) containing fluids. As far as its fabricators concerned, the systematic care of welding parameters should be taken to obtain comparable SSCC resistance of their weldment to that of its base material. In this respect, every different type of welding joint design for this use should be verified to be SSCC-proof with relevant test procedures. In this study, the welding parameters to secure a proper SSCC resistance of steel pipe's weldments were reviewed on the Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR), which had been employed for actual fabrication of an offshore structure for oil and gas production. Based on this review, a guideline of welding parameters, such as, heat input, welding consumable for Y.S. 65 ksi class steel pipe material is proposed in terms of the NACE criteria for SSCC resistance.

  • High capacity container carrier has been considered for many decades to transport the more containers at the same time. Therefore, it is required for high capacity container ship to be applied thicker plate to accomodate a number of containers compared to that of general container ship. To maintain the same productivity of this thicker plate, new welding process should be considered. One of the process for vertical-up position is 2 electrodes EGW(Electro Gas Welding). 2 ectrodes EGW was applied and evaluated whether it can be applicable or not. The heat input used for 72mm thick plate was 520k11cm. from the mechanical test, it is considered that this process can be applicable, showing satisfaction of mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and impact property.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive method of angular distortion of the double-sided multi-pass butt weldment achieve it, the behavior of angular distortion in the butt weldment were investigated using comprehensive finite element analyses and experiments. The angular distortion in the multi-pass butt weldment strongly depends on the welding heat input(Q) and the effective bending rigidity of the weld throat. The effective bending rigidity of the first welding pass on the backing side was defined as the function of dimensionless parameter(k) and a bending rigidity of bead-on-plate weldment. Based on the results, the predictive equation for angular distortion of multi-pass butt weldment was proposed and verified by experiments.
