Underwater wet arc welding process was experimentally investigated by using the six types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2 mm diameter and the KR-RA steel plate of 11 mm thickness as base metal. Two types of electrodes were domestic covered arc welding electrode(CR13, CR14) and another two types of wet welding electrodes(UWCS, TN20)were imported goods, and the other two type (UWX1, UWX2) were individually designed flux coated electrodes for experimental welding purpose. Main experimental results are summerized as follows: 1. It is ascertained that individually designed flux coated electrode(UWX1) could be used in practice with KR-RA steel plate for underwater wet arc bead welds. 2. Welding arc can be generated easily and considerably kept in stable using TN20 and UWX1 electrodes. 3. The micro Vickers hardness value and the portion of martensite in the HAZ were increased in all the electrodes by rapid cooling rate, but it is relatively maintain stable for UWCS, TN20 and UWX1 electrodes.
Metal transfer behavior of three shielded metal arc welding electrodes, AWS El1018, E6013 and E6010, were investigated through the characterization of size distribution of droplets and measurement of arc voltage signals. Of the three electrodes, Ell018 electrode showed the largest droplet size with the smallest amount of spatter, while E6010 electrode showed the smallest droplet size with the largest amount of spatter. Even though Ell0l8 electrode showed a good agreement between the frequencies of voltage drop in FFT processed voltage signals and the transfer rate of droplets, E6013 and E6010 electrodes showed weaker correlation because of their dominant explosive transfer behavior. The type of cathode used and electrode baking time also influenced the metal transfer behavior. Compared to bead-on-plate welding using steel plate as a cathode, welding on a water-cooled copper pipe showed less short-circuiting and higher melting rate in all electrodes because of higher arc potential and/or anode drop. When baked for a long time, E6010 electrode showed much more stable arc with less short-circuiting and explosion due to the loss of gas formation ingredients.
Underwater wet bead-on-plate welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick SS400 steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2mm diameter. Two kinds of different flux coated wet arc electrodes (UW-1, UW-2) were individually designed flux materials, three kinds of the electrodes (E4301, E4311, E4313) were terrestrial electrodes and the another one (TN20) was an imported underwater wet welding electrode. As results, the individually designed flux coated underwater electrode, UW-2 and TN20 had a good starting and the excellent arc stability compared with other electrodes. No significant difference of bead appearance could be detected, but the slag detachability of TN20 electrodes was relatively undesirable. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value and the portion of martensite of HAZ were increased, but it was considerably maintain stable for TN20 and UW-2 electrodes. The individually designed flux coated electrode, UW-2 could be used in practice for underwater bead welds.
Magnesium alloy is used on parts of aircraft and electronic equipment because of the highest specific strength among the common metal materials. Recently, studies about appling magnesium alloy sheet to automotive bodies are on the increase rapidly. For application to automotive bodies, researches about characteristics of resistance spot welding of magnesium alloy sheet are essential. Magnesium alloy has low boiling point, so getting sound bead shape is difficult when appling varies welding processes. Resistance spot welding is also particular about setting optimum welding conditions because of spatter generation, pores and cracks occurrence in nugget. And life of electrodes is very short because of alloying with copper that main material of electrodes. This requires frequent dressing and replacement of electrodes and decrease in productivity of resistance spot welding on magnesium alloy. Therefore in this study, for effective analysis of changes in tensile shear load and nugget size during electrode life test, evaluate detail characteristics of resistance spot welding on magnesium alloy sheet using dome type electrode.
Underwater wet welding process was experimentally investigated by using the six types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2mm diameter and the KR-RA steel plate of 11mm thickness as base metal. Two types of electrodes were domestic covered are welding electrode(CR13, CR14) and another two types of wet welding electrodes(UW-CS-01, TN-20) and the other two types(UW-X1, UW-X2) where individually designed flux coasted electrode for experimental welding purpose.
Inner Structured and Bonded(ISB) panel, a kind of metallic sandwich panel, consists of two thin skin plates bonded to a micro-patterned inner structure. Its overall thickness is $1\~3mm$and it has attractive properties such as ultra-lightweight, high efficiency in stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratio. In many previous studies, resistance welding, brazing and adhesive bonding are studied for joining the panel. However these methods did not consider productivity, but focused on structural characteristics of joined panels, so that the joining process is very complicated and expensive. In this paper, a new joining process with resistance welding is developed. Curved surface electrodes are used to consider the productivity and the stopper is used between electrodes during welding time to maintain the shape of inner structure. Welding time, gap of electrodes and distance between welding points are selected as the process parameters. By measuring the tensile load with respect to the variation of welding time and gap of electrodes, proper welding conditions are studied. Welding time is proper between 1.5-2.5cycle. If welding time is too long, then inner structures are damaged by overheating. Gap of electrode should be shorter than threshold value fur joint strength, when total thickness of inner structure and skin plate is 3.3mm, the threshold distance is 3.0mm.
Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick SS400 mild steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter; KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA, and UWEB. As results, the developed flux coated underwater electrode had a good weldability compared with other domestic terrestrial electrodes. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value of HAZ were increased by quenching effects. Mechanical properties for the multi-pass butt-welding specimen are also tested experimentally. The feasibility of the developed underwater electrode was experimentally studied and the results achieved in this wet arc welds have shown that the developed wet welding electrode UWEB can have a degree of integrity.
In this study, the weld strength of extru-rivet spot welding was investigated by simulation and experiment. In order to obtain hot plasticity flow bonding of the two plates by a single rivet, electrodes are used for heating of the two plates and the rivet by electric resistance. Because weld strength is influenced by the temperature in the weld zone, the diameter of the electrodes and the amount of current supplied to the electrodes are important variables. For the simulation, heat distribution and weld strength were calculated using DEFORM-3D. The weld strength in the weld zone was calculated for various values of the experimental parameters. The simulation results showed that the weld strength was the highest when the weld current was 37kA, the electrode diameter was 12mm, and the welding frequency was 90cycle. Aluminum 5052 was used for the experimental study. A total of three aluminum plates, two welding plates with 1mm thickness and one plate with 2mm thickness for the inserting rivet, were used for the experimental extru-rivet spot welding.
Aluminium and aluminium alloys have the high electrical and heat conductivity. It gives rise to difficulties for a choice of electrodes material for their contact electric welding. This paper describes the investigations performed to solve the above problem. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain dispersion-hardening alloys by the internal oxidation method, to optimize their contents and treatment modes, to produce electrodes of these alloys and to test them. The strengthing effect of alloys with oxide particles depends on their size stability at high temperatures. Despite of the fact, that oxides are the most stable of all the non-metallic phases their coagulation takes place. Based on the early results, we chose two types of alloys, first No. 1 Cu - 0,4%Al and second No. 2 Cu - 0,2%Be for production of electrodes. These alloys had not additional alloying elements. These alloys were prepared as 1 mm plates and flake-formed 200 m thick, and also No. 1 as a powder of size 100 mkm (received from Korea). The large samples for electrodes were produced by three methods : explosive welding method, dynamic one including the explosion compression of electrode blank and the quasi-dynamic method including the high-speed compression of dense briquest and the further hot extrusion of a rod.
In order to improve productivity of large container ship construction, large heat input and/or high productive welding technologies are necessary. This can be achieved by the joint research and cooperation among steel maker, welding consumable company, welding equipment company and ship yards. Two electrodes SAW process is effective the plate butt welding and partial joint welding, while FGB welding process is for the connection of block to block joint. The higher strength and thicker steel is developed, the more reliable welding procedure such as two electrodes EGW including light weight welding equipment should be developed.
