  • In this study, the numerical analysis model for fatigue life prediction of welded structures are presented. In order to evaluate the structural degradation of welded structures due to fatigue loading, continuum damage mechanics approach is applied. Damage evolution equation of welded structures under arbitrary fatigue loading is constructed as a unified plasticity-damage theory. Moreover, by integration of damage evolution equation regarding to stress amplitude and number of cycles, the simplified fatigue life prediction model is derived. The proposed model is compared with fatigue test results of T-joint welded structures to obtain its validation and usefulness. It is confirmed that the predicted fatigue life of T-joint welded structures are coincided well with the fatigue test results.

  • This paper presents friction and wear related results of thermite and gas pressure welded rails under various environmental contact conditions. A welded rail which was fabricated by thermite welding and gas pressure one has been tested over full range of test conditions in a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rates of a welded rail are heavily dependent on the contact pressures and sliding environments for two welding methods such as thermite and gas pressure weldings.

  • Fatigue fracture of the welded joints of bogie frames is one of unsolved problems. To improve the fatigue strength of the welded joints, various techniques have been applied. In this study, we have investigated the effect of shot peening on the fatigue characteristics of SS400 welded specimens. The fatigue lives of four kinds of welded specimens were examined; welded, PWHT, shot peened, and shot peened after PWHT. The results of the fatigue tests show that the fatigue limit of the shot-peened specimens is higher than that of the welded specimens, and the PWHT specimens have a lower fatigue limit than the welded specimens. It was found that shot peening is a very effective method to improve the fatigue strength of SS400 welded joints.

  • Fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint is considerably influenced by corrosive environments. Particularly, the chloride and the sulfide are most injurious to strength of the spot welded lap joint. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate its effect to corrosion fatigue strength for safe life design of spot welded structures. In order to evaluate their corrosion fatigue strength, corrosion fatigue tests on the spot welded lap joints of the uncoated and the coated high strength steel sheets were conducted in air and in 10% NaCl solution. Corrosion fatigue strength of the uncoated specimens were entirely lower than the coated one in NaCl solution, but those of the coated specimens in NaCl solution were lower than in air. And stress distribution in single spon welded lap joint subjected to tension-shear load was investigated by the finite element method. Using these results, we tried to evaluate corrosion fatgue strength of the various spot welded lap joints with maximum stress $\sigma_{max}$ at edge on loading side of the spot welded lap joint. We could find that corrosion fatigue strength could be quantitatively and systematically rearranged by $\sigma_{max}$.

  • H-shaped welded steel column members are fabricated by welding together pre-cut flanges and the web. Modern fabricators are increasingly using plasma-cutting technique instead of traditional flame cutting. Different fabrication techniques result in different degrees of geometric imperfections and residual stresses, which can have considerable influence on the strength of steel columns. This paper presents the experimental investigation based temperature profiles, geometric imperfections, and built-in residual stresses in plasma cut-welded H-shaped steel column members and in similar flame cut-welded H-shaped steel columns. Temperature measurements were taken during and immediately after the cutting operations and the welding operations. The geometric imperfections were established at closely spaced grid locations on the original plates, after cutting plates into plate strips, and after welding plate strips into columns. Geometric imperfections associated with plasma cut element and members were found to be less than those of the corresponding elements and members made by flame cutting. The "Method of Section" technique was used to establish the residual stresses in the plate, plate strip, and in the welded columns. Higher residual stress values were observed in flame cut-welded columns. Models for idealized residual stress distributions for plasma cut and flame cut welded sections have been proposed.

  • Spot welded structure is operated in diverse situation because of temperature, humidity and precipitation. In addition factors of environmental pollution such as acid rain, that courses corrosion, have the tendency to increase, But spot welded structure strength is affected by dampness and environment temperatures. Therefore, it is important to evaluate effect of temperature of spot welded part, In this study, the strength distribution of spot welded plates is evaluated about the environmental temperature of zine coated steel plates and test is conducted with welded part immersed in distilled and synthetic sea water. Specimens are immersed into water for 10, 100, 500 and 1000hours to evaluate the effects of water immersion time on tensile-shear strength under the conditions of -40, 0, 20 and $50^{\circ}C$. Strength is evaluated by tensile-shear test. The conditions of spot welding are 240kgf electrode force, 10KA welding current with 0 and 5mm clearance. From this study, spot welded specimens with clearance have lower tensile-shear strength in the distilled water or synthetic sea water comparing with spot welded specimens without clearance. And they have lower tensile-shear strength under $-40^{\circ}C$ and over $50^{\circ}C$.

  • Electrochemical characteristics of welded stainless steels containing Ti have been studied by using the electrochemical techniques in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$+0.01 M KSCN solutions at $25^{\circ}C$. Stainless steels with 12 mm thick-ness containing $0.2{\~}0.9 wt\%$ Ti were fabricated with vacuum melting and following rolling process. The stainless steels were solutionized for 1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ and welded by MIG method. Samples were individually prepared with welded zone, heat affected zone, and matrix for intergranular corrosion and pitting test. Optical microscope, XRD and SEM are used for analysing microstructure, surface and corrosion morphology of the stainless steels. The welded zone of the stainless steel with lower Ti content have shown dendrite structure mixed with $\gamma$ and $\delta$ phase. The Cr-carbides were precipitated at twin and grain boundary in heat affected zone of the steel and also the matrix had the typical solutionized structure. The result of electrochemical measurements showed that the corrosion potential of welded stainless steel were Increased with higher Ti content. On the other hand, reactivation($I_r$), passivation and active current($I_a$) density were decreased with higher Ti content. In the case of lower Ti content, the corrosion attack of welded stainless steel was remarkably occurred along intergranular boundary and ${\gamma}/{\delta}$ phase boundary in heat affected zone.

  • Stainless steel sheets are commonly used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. These are mainly fabricated by spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget. edge of the spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point. Especially, it is influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors of spot welded joint. Therefore, it is not too much to say that structural rigidity and strength of spot-welded structures is decided by fatigue strength of spot welded lap joint. Thus, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and systematic long life design criterion for the spot-welded structure. In this study, numerical stress analysis was performed by using 3-dimensional finite element model on IB-type spot-welded lap joint of 304 stainless steel sheet under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were also conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length, and width of the plate. From the results, it was found that fatigue strength of IB-type spot-welded lap joints was influenced by its geometrical factors, however, could be systematically rearranged by maximum principal stress ({TEX}$σ_{1max}${/TEX}) at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point.
