A Study on the Fracture Toughness Characteristics of FCAW Weldment of Steel for Offshore Structures (해양 구조물용 강재 FCAW 용접부의 파괴인성 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Fracture toughness is an important parameter in designing offshore structures to ensure resistance to fracture at various temperatures. In this study, a series of experiments is carried out to obtain fracture toughness values (CTOD) of API 2W Gr.50B, welded using FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Weld). In particular, a comparison of absorbed impact energy and CTOD values are made with respect to two different welding groove shapes; double-V-groove and double-bevel-groove. Charpy impact tests are performed for specimens sampled near the root gap, and CTOD tests are carried out for three point bending specimens having the notch at weld zone. While Charpy impact test result is determined to be a good qualitative measure of fracture toughness, no quantitative correspondence between impact absorbed energy and CTOD values was found. Based on the experiment, it is observed that double-V-groove welds give lower transition temperature than those of double-bevel-groove.

A Study on the Stress Corrosion Cracking Evaluation for Weld Joint of TMCP steel by SP-SSRT Method (SP-SSRT법에 의한 TMCP강 용접부의 응력부식균열 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The object of this paper is to evaluate SCC(stress corrosion cracking) susceptibility for parent metal and bond line region of weld joints which have the various weld heat input condtions in TMCP(thermo-mechanical control process) steel by SP-SSRT(small punch-slow strain rate test) method. And the SCC test results of TMCP steel are compared with those of the conventional HT50 steel which has te almost same tensile strength level like TMCP steel. The loading rate used was $3\times10^{-4}$mm/min and the corrosive environment was synthetic sea water. According to the test results, in the case of parent metal, TMCP steel showed higher SCC susceptibility than HT50 steel because of the high plastic strain level of ferrite microstructure obtained by accelerated cooling. And in the case of bond line, the both TMCP steel and HT50 steel showed low load-displacement behaviors and higher SCC susceptibility above 0.6. These results may be caused by theembrittled martensite structure on HT50 steel and by the coarsened grain and the proeutectoid ferrite structure obtained by the impart of accelerated cooling effect on TMCP steel.

  • Dissimilar friction welds were produced using 15-mm diameter solid bars of chrome molybdenum steel (KS SCM440) and carbon steel (KS SM20C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to ensure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond area and HAZ, and macro-structure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated (PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased to 100% of the SM20C base metal under the condition of a heating time of more than four seconds. Optimal welding conditions were n = 2,000 (rpm), HP = 60 (MPa), UP = 100 (MPa), HT = 5 (s),and UT = 5 (s), when the total upset length was 7.8 (mm). The hardness distribution peak of the friction welded joints could be eliminated using PWHT. The two different kinds of materials were strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles, with no molten material, particle growth, or defects.

  • This paper investigates the time-dependent crack growth in X20CrMoV 12 1 steel weld joints. Crack growth test are carried out $545^{\circ}C$ on side-grooved 1/2T CT specimens under static loads. A simulated material is produced for the intercritical HAZ, where fracture normally occurs. Constitutive properties are obtained for the simulated HAZ material as well as for the base metal and weld metal. Finite element analyses of crack growth are performed on the models with and without a HAZ layer, using the experimental crack length-time history. The inclusion of HAZ layer increase the load line velocities significantly. The crack growth rates are correlated reasonably well with $C^*$. The smallest crack size for the validity of $C^*$ is found much smaller than the ASTM crack initiation size for 1T CT specimen of creep ductile materials.

  • In this study, the effect on the welding angle distortion was reviewed by carrying out a thermal elastic-plastic analysis while changing the cooling condition(width, length, and distance from weld torch to cooling torch) the back of the welding zone for the butt weld joint. The review results revealed that maximum 57% of reduction in the angle distortion was achieved when the distance between weld torch and cooling tip of 25mm, cooling length of 80mm, and cooling width of 30mm were maintained.

  • The versatile practical use of electron beam welding which is very high energy density is still in early stage, but in the special welding field, the welding process is used in manufactured goods. The investigation for electron beam welding up to the present was almost achieved not for the mechanical properties of welded joint but for the process itself. On this investigation, the fatigue strength, crack propergation phenomena and hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone of partially penetrated welded joint of HT80 steel by electron beam welding was accomplished. The tensile fatigue strength in weld line direction of the joint was about $25kg/mm^2$. There still appeared spikes on the tips of penetration, and the crack initiated at the tips of spikes not from the roots. The hardness of the weld metal was higher than it of base metal because of production of martensite by rapid cooling.

  • The effect of welding condition on tensile properties of KS5J32 Al Alloy was investigated under various welding conditions. The 1.6 mm thick KS5J32 alloy sheets were joined by friction stir welding (FSW) technique with butt joint. The tool rotation speeds were 1000, 1250 and 1500 rpm, and the welding speeds were varied within the range from 100 to 600 mm/min. Voids mainly occurred at the advancing side of the tool probe, when the tool rotation speed was low, due to insufficient materials flow. When the weld pitch exceeded 0.4 mm/rev, voids were observed under all welding conditions and the area of voids increased with increasing weld pitch. For void-free specimens, fracture always occurred at base materials. However voids affected the location of fractures, base metal or welded zone, when the voids existed within the welds.

  • In this paper, joints of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L were performed by friction welding method. Particularly, Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy is attractive candidate as nuclear power plant material and exibit the best combination of high strength and good electrical and thermal conductivity of any copper alloy examined. The stainless steel is a structural material while copper alloy acts as a heat sink material for the surface heat flux in the first wall. So, in this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of such nuclear reactor component of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L steel sere performed.

  • The shock absorbers for marine vehicles are very important components to absorbing the shock resulting from driving. Depending on the kinds of vehicles, these essential components, piston and piston rod, must be made of S25C, S45C, and SCM440, must be precisely machined, and assembled by the bolts. Other materials used have been difficult to weld, and could be unstable in quality, by the conventional arc welding. Also, they have been associated with a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. However, using the friction welding technique, such problems will be avoided. These factors have necessitated the domestic development of the marine shock absorber using a friction welding, as well as stimulating a new approach to the study of real-time weld quality evaluation by AE techniques.

Effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment for Crystal Orientation Distribution on Friction Stir Welds of Al-Mg-Si Series Aluminum Alloy Sheets (Al-Mg-Si계 알루미늄 합금 판재 마찰교반접합부의 결정 방위 분포에 대한 용접후열처리의 영향)

  • Friction stir welding (FSW) was carried out for Al-Mg-Si series aluminum alloys which are being used for automotive body structure. Consequently, Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was applied to the friction stir welds to evaluate the effect of the paint baking process which is one of the automotive fabrication process on friction stir welded zone (FSWZ) in 443K for 1.2Ks. Grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution was measured about both the as welded specimens and the post weld heat treated specimens. An optical microscope (OM) and an field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was used for observing the grain structure and measuring its crystal orientation distribution, respectively. Changes on the grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution were not detected. From the present results, it was confirmed that the paint baking process after FSW do not affect on the grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution of FSWZ. The comprehensive investigations will be performed for various automotive aluminum alloys manufactured by different processes, in the future.
