Characteristics of the Post-Weld Heat Treatment of Chrome Low Alloy Material for a Power Plant Boiler (발전 보일러용 크롬 저합금강의 용접후열처리 특성)

  • This study investigated characteristics of the post-weld heat treatment of SA213-T23, which was developed for water wall of the ultra super critical power boiler. The temperature of post weld heat treatment should be $730^{\circ}C$ or higher to reduce hardness of the deposit metal and heat affected zone. Coincidently, the temperature should remain $760^{\circ}C$ or lower to prevent hardness of the base metal from dropping. Hardness decline of deposit metal was trivial according to time when the holding time of heat treatment at $740^{\circ}C$ of post-weld heat treatment gradually increased from initial 15 minutes.

  • Super duplex stainless steels have been used for offshore oil and gas piping systems which are subject to corrosion atmosphere, because they have excellent resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and Pitting corrosion and high strength/weight ratio. Normally, the welding for duplex stainless steels has been peformed using GTAW with Ar shielding gas. However, in case of using Ar as shielding gas, the corrosion resistance at root weld metal will be deteriorated due to loss of nitrogen from weld deposit during welding. It is wellknown that the corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless can be restored by addition of nitrogen as shielding gas. In this study, we made super duplex welding with using several kinds of shielding and purging gases and investigated the relationship between shielding gas and corrosion resistance. Consequently, it was shown that corrosion resistance of weld deposit can be restored by addition of $N_{2}$ as shielding gas.

  • The chemical composition of deposit metal by flux cored arc welding can be easily regulated though addition of deoxidizers and alloying elements in cored flux and fluxes of flux coored wire arc analogous to those of coated electrode. It is necessary to investigate the transfer and yield efficiency due to addition of necessary alloy elements in deposit metal. This report is made to intorduce an experimental equation from the relation between welding condition and extent of penetration, deposit metal and weld melt slag and to estimate transfer and yield efficiency of alloy components in fluxes through chemical analysis of deposit metal.

A Study on the Corrosion Properties of Underwater Wet Arc Welds Using the SM 41 (선체용 압연 강판의 습식 수중 아크 용접부의 부식특성에 관한 연구)

  • Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick KR-RA steel plate using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter, KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA and UWEB. From analysis of bead appearance, detachability of weld slag, spatter occurrence and arc stability, JPUW gives the best result, and UWEB is superior to KSKR and KSKT. By experimental result of hardness distribution on the weld bonds, UWEB weld has the narrowest bond structure which is probable condition to get the best mechanical properties of weld. UWEB and JPUW welds have more even hardness distribution across weld deposit and base metal. Upon polarization test to measure the respondency of corrosion, the electrode of UWEB shows the most excellent degree due to the low open circuit potential difference.

  • To explore the possible application of thermal analysis technique as a probe for finding weld defects, Hydrogen trapping phenomena in Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) of the AISI 5160 spring steel were investigated. HAZ was divided into five parts, which were used as thermal analysis specimens. Two types of trap sites were found in HAZ, ferrite/cementin interface and microvoid. The thermal analysis peak due to the ferrite/cementite interface increased its height toward the weld deposit. The thermal analysis peak due to the microvoid was the highest where the grain size was the smallest. The correspondence between the cold cracking and hydrogen trap nature is also discussed.

  • The phenomenon of weld shrinkage mainly occurs owing to residual stress by heating, which largely effects on welding quality, Actually as the shrinkage rate depends on the weld deposit amount, so it is desired that the sectional area of weld joint shall be reduced. In this respect the Electron beam welding has more profitable position compare to Narrow-gap TIG welding which is even superior to other arc welding processes. In case of thick austenitic stainless steel the shrinkage rate of Electron beam welding has about $10\%$ of Narrow-gap TIG welding's, which means that residual stress is a lot less than that of Narrow-gap TIG welding. And heat input and welded section area also indicate large difference between two processes.

Microstructure and CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) of Deposit Weld Metal in 30 mm Thick Plate

  • The microstructure and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of deposit weld metal were investigated for a 30 mm- thick plate welded with flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW) processes. The CTOD test was carried out both as welded condition and as stress-relieved specimen by local compression. The crack growth rates in FCAW were faster than those in a SAW, and the acicular ferrite content by the SAW process was increased relatively more than that by the FCAW process. The fatigue crack growth rate in a welded specimen was faster than that in locally compressed specimen. The CTOD value of locally compressed specimens was lower than that of as welded specimen. Furthermore, the CTOD value tested with the SAW process was higher than that tested with the FCAW process.

  • To study the effect of welding methods on the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior of welded AISI type 316L and 304 austenitic stainless steel, the Slow Strain Rate Technique(SSRT) has been adopted in the boiling 45 wt% $MgCl_2$ solution. The results are as follows. 1) Welded sections are more susceptible than base metal in SCC, and the rank of SCC, and the rasistance in welding method is TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and ARC. 2) The Ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and the strain of both base metal and welded joint are reduced as decreasing extension rate. 3) The SCC resistance of 316L base metal and welded sections are superior than that of 304. 4) The tendency of pitting and the SCC suseptibility are agreed well, and the SCC site is welded deposit section in 316L whereas HAZ in 304.

  • The effect of silicon and manganese, in the ranges of 0.3% to 1.0wt% Si and 0.7 to 2.6wt%Mn, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of flux cored arc welded deposits have been investigated for the purpose of improving mechanical properties. Microstructure of weld metals was mainly influenced by manganese content, and manganese increased the volum fraction of acicular ferrite and refined the microstructure. Also, tensile properties were governed by manganese content, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were increased by approximately 82MPa and 58MPa per 1% Mn addition to the deposit. Toughness was improved by increasing Mn content and lowering Si content. Optimal impact properties were obtained at above 1.8wt% Mn and below 0.5wt% Si. Acicular ferrite was predominant factor in improving mechanical properties. Formation of acicular ferrite was promoted by manganese and no direct relationship between AF(acicular ferrite) proportion and oxygen in weld metal was found.
