대차 프레임용 SM490A강 용접재의 피로 특성 평가 (Fatigue Characteristic of SM490A Welded Joints for Bogie Frame)

  • In this study, we compared the fatigue characteristics of weld metal with those of base metal. Also we examined the influence of heat treatment and weld bead profiles for the fatigue life of weld metals. From the experimental results, it was seen that the fatigue characteristics of welded specimens with a grinded toe of bead are slightly better than those are not grinded. Also the fatigue life is affected more by the stress concentration on the profile change in the weld toe rather than by residual stress influence, because the fatigue characteristic of weld metals was not influenced whether the heat treatment is conducted or not.

전자기펄스용접에서 용접강도에 미치는 접합간격의 영향 (Effects of the Stand-off Distance on the Weld Strength in Magnetic Pulse Welding)

  • Although Magnetic Pulse Welding(MPW) is not a recently developed technique, it has gained the attention of the automotive industry. MPW has become an accepted welding process because it enables the joining of similar, and dissimilar materials, with a very short cycle time, without the need for filler metal and gases. In this study, the effect of the stand-off distance on the weld strength has been investigated. The compressive strength of the MPW joints was evaluated using UTM. The interface of weld, IMC composition and morpology were studied by SEM and EDS. It was concluded that the stand-off distance and the voltage are the main parameters influencing the strength of weld. In case of too high stand-off distance, it influenced harmful effect because of the resistance of deformation.

FRACTURE TOUGHNESS CHARACTERISTICS IN HIGH ENERGY DENSITY BEAM WELDED JOINT OF HIGH TENSILE STEELS

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate fracture toughness on the Laser and the electron beam welded joints of high tensile steels (HT500, HT550, HT650) by using 3-point bend CTOD and Charpy impact test. WM (weld metal) CTOD tests have been carried out using two kinds of CTOD specimen, the Laser beam welding (108mm length, and 24mm width, and 12mm thickness) and the electron beam welding (l71mm length, and 38mm width, and 19mm thickness). WM Charpy impact specimen is a standard V-notch type, and the temperature of the experiment is changed from -45 to 20 degree of centigrade. FE-analysis is also performed in order to investigate the effect of stress-strain fields on fracture characteristics. Results of the standard V-notch Charpy test are influenced by strength mis-match effect and the absorbed energy vE depends on crack path, and The transition temperature of Laser beam welded joints is more higher than that of electron beam welded joints. Results of the 3-point bend test give low critical CTOD and the crack path is in the weld metal of al specimens. These results indicate fracture toughness characteristics of the welded joints and transition temperature of HT500 are similar both a Laser beam welded joint and an electron beam welded joint. But the fracture toughness and the transition temperature of the electron beam welded joints of HT550 and HT650 are higher than those o the Laser beam welded joints.

  • A copper-tungsten sintered alloy(WCu) has been friction-welded to a tough pitch copper (Cu) in order to investigate friction weldability. The maximum tensile strength of the SWu-Cu friction welded joints had cp to 96% of those of the Cu base metal under the condition of friction time 0.6sec, friction pressure 45MPa, upset pressure 125MPa and upset time 5.0sec. And it is confirmed that the tensile strength of friction welded joints are influenced highly by upset pressure rather than friction time. And it is considered that mixed layer was formed in the Cu adjacent side to the weld interface, W particles included in mixed layer induced fracture in the Cu adjacent side to the weld interface and also, thickness of mixed layer was reduced as upset pressure increase.

  • In this investigation, the effect of crack orientation on spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints has been statistically analyzed by Weibull distribution. The fatigue crack growth tests are conducted under three different constant stress intensity factor range (SIFR) control at room temperature with R = 0.1 and frequency 10Hz on compact tension (CT) specimen machined at base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM). The experimental fatigue crack growth rate data were obtained for two types of specimens having LT and TL orientations. LT specimens both base metal and weld metal showed higher fatigue crack growth rate as compared to TL specimens. In the lower SIFR region, FCGR were found to be almost 3 times higher in higher SIFR region. The shape parameter of Weibull both LT and TL orientation for FCGR was increased with increasing SIFR, the scale parameter was also increased with increasing SIFR. The smallest value of the shape parameter was shown in weld metal specimens having LT orientation at lower SIFR region.

SM45C 중실축의 마찰용접 기계적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Mechanical Properties of the Friction Welding with Solid Shaft of SM45C)

  • In the presented study, SM45C carbon steel parts were joined by friction welding. The welding process was carried out under optimized conditions using statistical approach. The study of SM45C is conducted with various combinations of process parameters. Parameter optimization, microstructure and mechanical property correlation are the major contribution of the study. The welded joints were produced by varying spindle revolution speed, friction pressure, upset pressure and burn-off length. Tension tests were applied to welded parts to obtain the strength of the joints. Fracturs properties were additionally obtained experimentally under fluctuated tensile loads. Microstructures using microphotographs were examined in the weld interface and weld region and heat affected zone and base metal and flash zone of welded parts. Finally, Hardness variations in welding zone and base metal were also obtained. Through these tests, the optimum conditions of parameters for ${\phi}20$ SM45C in friction welding were obtained when the friction spindle revolution was 1,950 rpm, the friction pressures was 30 MPs, upset pressures was 50 MPs.

  • Since its invention at TWI in 1991, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has become a major joining process in the aerospace, railway and ship building industries especially in the fabrication of aluminium alloys. In an attempt to optimize the friction stir welding process of Al alloys for extrusion Aluminium carbody of HEMU-400X (Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series), effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth and dwelling time on the weld joints properties were evaluated. Experimental tests were carried out for butt joined Al plates. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Al alloys for Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with an insufficient heat input. The microstructures of welds have dynamic-recrystallized grain similar to stir zone in FSW weld. For sound joints without defects, at the rotation speed of 700 rpm with different welding speeds, the tensile strengths of the Stir Zone(SZ) were almost the same, 80% of those of the base metal.   • In this study, constant amplitude fatigue tests on load-carrying fillet welded specimen carried out, and fatigue strengths were evaluated. Also, an attempt is made to develop a new analytical model with more accuracy to predict the fatigue crack propagation life of fillet welded cruciform joints of SWS 490B steels containing lack of penetration defects. from the result of this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, containing lack of penetration defacts are found to be affected by the weld geometry and the number of weld pass.

  • When material properties depend much on positions in a material or it is difficult to make test specimens from a material or component, an instrumented indentation test described in ISO 14577-1, 14577-2 or KS B 0950 can be used to measure material properties and damage. In this study, first of all, the principals of the instrumented indentation test, KS B 0950 are introduced and yield strengths, tensile strengths and work hardening exponents of base materials, heat affected zones and weld materials are measured. In addition, the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the material properties is investigated. Finally the fatigue lift of butt welded specimens are evaluated by the local strain approach. To calculate local strains and stresses, elasto-plastic finite element analysis is conducted using the measured properties.

  • This paper is concerned with the fatigue behaviour of welded joints by the notch stress approach. The actual welded shape is complex and 3-dimensional that may influence greatly the fatigue strength. The purpose of the paper is to present a way of modelling the actual weld bead shape by using a 3-D Laser scanner for experimental models of steel plates with longitudinal fillet welds, and applying its results to a proper notch stress method for the fatigue strength. The present approach to assess the fatigue strength is quite promising with application to a variety of welded joints and effects of weld profiling to fatigue strength.
