  • ost digital cameras use single sensor array with color filter array to reduce size and cost. However images taken by single sensor array have only one color component per pixel, to obtain a color image missing two color components need to be reconstructed. This reconstructing process is called as demosaicking. This paper propose a new directional demosaicking method and proposed method achieves better image quality with enhanced weighting function. With comparing objective and subjective performance, we show proposed method achieves better performance than the conventional methods.

  • Multi-view face detection has become an active area for research in the last few years. In this paper, a novel multi-view human face detection algorithm based on improved real Adaboost is presented. Real Adaboost algorithm is improved by weighted combination of weak classifiers and the approximately best combination coefficients are obtained. After that, we proved that the function of sample weight adjusting method and weak classifier training method is to guarantee the independence of weak classifiers. A coarse-to-fine hierarchical face detector combining the high efficiency of Haar feature with pose estimation phase based on our real Adaboost algorithm is proposed. This algorithm reduces training time cost greatly compared with classical real Adaboost algorithm. In addition, it speeds up strong classifier converging and reduces the number of weak classifiers. For frontal face detection, the experiments on MIT+CMU frontal face test set result a 96.4% correct rate with 528 false alarms; for multi-view face in real time test set result a 94.7 % correct rate. The experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • When the micro-Doppler (MD) image of a ballistic missile is derived, the translational motion compensation (TMC) method is usually applied to the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) image, but yields poor results because of the micro-motion of the ballistic missile. This paper proposes an efficient TMC method to obtain a focused MD image of a ballistic missile engaged in complicated micro-motion. During range alignment, range profiles (RPs) are coarsely aligned by using the 1D entropy cost function of RPs as a mark, then the coarsely-aligned RPs are fine-aligned by using the minimum 2D entropy of the MD image. During phase adjustment, the gradient of the phase error is appropriately weighted and added to the previous phase error to further fine-tune the aligned RPs. In simulations using the point scatterer model and the measured data from the real missile model, the proposed method provided better image focus than the existing method.

  • Most commercial digital still cameras use a single sensor array (e.g., CMOS or CCD) with color filter array (CFA) to reduce the cost and size. Since the image obtained with CFA has only one color value per pixel, the demosaicing is needed to acquire missing two color values. Although many demosaicing methods have been proposed, they still have artifacts such as rainbow and zippering artifact. In this paper, we propose the simple demosaicing algorithm using tendency of neighbor pixels with the enhanced weighting function. In the experimental results, our algorithm shows much better subjective qualities of the images than conventional demosaicing algorithm and improves objective qualities.

  • Recently face detection has actively been researched due to its wide range of applications, such as personal identification and security systems. In this paper, a new face detection method based on the distribution map is proposed. Face-like regions are first extracted by applying the skin color map with the frequency to a color image and then, possible eye regions are determined by using the pupil color distribution map within the face-like regions. This enables the reduction of space for finding facial features. Eye candidates are detected by means of a template matching method using weighted window, which utilizes the correlation values of the luminance component and chrominance components as feature vectors. Finally, a cost function for mouth detection and location information between the facial features are applied to each pair of the eye candidates for face detection. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a high performance.

  • Fingerprint matching accuracy is essential in deploying a music search service. This paper deals with a method to improve fingerprint matching accuracy by utilizing an auxiliary information which is called power weight. Power weight is an expected robustness of each hash bit. While the previous power mask binarizes the expected robustness into strong and weak bits, the proposed method utilizes a real-valued function of the expected robustness as weights for fingerprint matching. As a countermeasure to the increased storage cost, we propose a compression method for the power weight which has strong temporal correlation. Experiments on the publicly-available music datasets confirmed that the proposed power weight is effective in improving fingerprint matching performance.

  • Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) is an appropriate framework for obtaining optimal designs by taking uncertainties into account. Large-scale problems with implicit limit state functions and problems with discrete design variables are two significant challenges to traditional RBDO methods. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a hybrid method to perform RBDO of structures that links Firefly Algorithm (FA) as an optimization tool to advanced (finite element) reliability methods. Furthermore, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the FA are compared based on the design cost (objective function) they achieve. In the proposed method, Weighted Simulation Method (WSM) is utilized to assess reliability constraints in the RBDO problems with explicit limit state functions. WSM is selected to reduce computational costs. To performing RBDO of structures with finite element modeling and implicit limit state functions, a First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) based on the Direct Differentiation Method (DDM) is utilized. Four numerical examples are considered to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method. The findings illustrate that the proposed RBDO method is applicable and efficient for RBDO problems with discrete and continuous design variables and finite element modeling.

  • There is a growing trend of considering uncertainty in optimization process since last few decades. In this regard, Robust Design Optimization (RDO) scheme has gained increasing momentum because of its virtue of improving performance of structure by minimizing the variation of performance and ensuring necessary safety and feasibility of constraint under uncertainty. In the present study, RDO of reinforced concrete folded plate and shell structure has been carried out incorporating uncertainty in the relevant parameters by Monte Carlo Simulation. Folded plate and shell structures are among the new generation popular structures often used in aesthetically appealing constructions. However, RDO study of such important structures is observed to be scarce. The optimization problem is formulated as cost minimization problem subjected to the force and displacements constraints considering dead, live and wind load. Then, the RDO is framed by simultaneously optimizing the expected value and the variation of the performance function using weighted sum approach. The robustness in constraint is ensured by adding suitable penalty term and through a target reliability index. The RDO problem is solved by Sequential Quadratic Programming. Subsequently, the results of the RDO are compared with conventional deterministic design approach. The parametric study implies that robust designs can be achieved by sacrificing only small increment in initial cost, but at the same time, considerable quality and guarantee of the structural behaviour can be ensured by the RDO solutions.

  • In order to ensure reliable navigation performance of a lunar exploration rover, navigation algorithms using additional sensors such as inertial measurement units and cameras are essential on lunar surface in the absence of a global navigation satellite system. Unprecedentedly, Visual Odometry (VO) using a stereo camera has been successfully implemented at the US Mars rovers. In this paper, we estimate the 6-DOF pose of the lunar exploration rover from gray images of a lunar-like terrains. The proposed algorithm estimates relative pose of consecutive images by sparse image alignment based semi-direct VO. In order to overcome vulnerability to non-linearity of direct VO, we add adaptive motion prior weights calculated from a linear function of the previous pose to the optimization cost function. The proposed algorithm is verified in lunar-like terrain dataset recorded by Toronto University reflecting the characteristics of the actual lunar environment.

  • Positional data of moving objects can be regularly sampled in order to minimize the cost of data collection in LBS. Since position data which are regularly sampled cannot include the changes of position occurred between sampling periods, sampled position data differ from the data predicted by a time parameterized linear function. Uncertain position data caused by these differences make the accuracy of the range queries for present positions diminish in the TPR tree. In this paper, we propose the uncertainty region to handle the range queries for uncertain position data. The uncertainty region is defined by the position data predicted by the time parameterized linear function and the estimated uncertainty error. We also present the weighted recent uncertainty error policy and the kalman filter policy to estimate the uncertainty error. For performance test, the query processor based by the uncertainty region is implemented in the TPR tree. The experiments show that the Proposed query processing methods are more accurate than the existing method by 15%.
