PURPOSE: This study intended to verify whether there was actual correlation between weight-bearing asymmetry and a limitation in hip joint rotation range in patients with low back pain. METHODS: Thirty five low back pain patients voluntarily participated this study. For each participant, hip joint medial rotation symmetry rate and the weight-bearing symmetry rate were calculated. The correlation between the two variables was investigated. RESULTS: A decrease in the left hip joint medial rotation range of motion (ROM) was observed more often than a reduction in the right hip joint medial rotation ROM. However, similar number between right and left side was observed in ground reaction force more weighted. The coefficient between the passive hip joint medial rotation symmetry rate and the weight loading symmetry ratio was -0.19 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated a weak correlation between the hip joint medial rotation ROM and the weight distribution of both feet. Such result suggests that careful evaluation by separating each element is needed in treating patients with low back pain. Future research should take into account asymmetric alignment and abnormal movement in different joints of the body as well as asymmetry in the bilateral hip joint rotation and the unilateral weight supporting posture.

The wheel bearing in vehicles has been improved to unit module by joining a bearing to a hub in order to achieve weight reduction and easy assembly. Currently, the contact force between a raceway and balls of a bearing is applied as the external force in order to analyse the structure of the unit type bearings. In this paper, simplified boundary conditions are discussed for structure analysis of wheel bearing unit. From the procedure, the contact conditions of balls and race in wheel bearing unit are considered as equivalent non-linear spring elements. The end node of a spring element is constrained in displacement. And the external force of boundary conditions is applied at the contact point between tire and road. For the evaluation of this analysis, its results for the force of spring elements are compared with contact forces of calculated results. and also maximum equivalent stresses of analysis are compared with results of test at the flange of inner ring. The analysis results with proposed boundary conditions are more accurate than results from analysis which is generally used.

In this paper, the behaviour of cavitation erosion, influence of corrosion and corrosion control on slide bearing metals for internal combustion engine were investigated, and this experiment was done by the vibratory cavitation erosion tester. The main results obtained are as follows: 1. With decreasing the space between horn and specimen, the weight loss and its rate increased step by step. But the weight loss and its rate of 0.2mm space decreased conversely more than that of 0.4mm space at early stage. 2. The weight loss and its rate with change of pH were appeared to the order of pH2>pH12>pH7>pH4. And the weight loss and its rate at pH 4 decreased at best. 3. The weight loss and its rate by cavitation erosion for bearing metals were shown to the order of W.M7>W.M1>K.M4. 4. There appeared mainly small pit hole at pH2, and appeared the pit of netting thread type at pH12 by the results of the damaged surfaces at pH2 and pH12 environments that were sensitive to cavitation erosion. 5. With increasing the viscosity of lubricating oil, the weight loss rate by cavitation erosion became dull at the space below 0.5mm. 6. The protective efficiency of cavitation erosion-corrosion is superior inhibitor of chormate(25 ppm) to cathodic protection.
This study was performed to investigate the best surgical technique for normal stifle mobility by comparison with clinical signs and histopathological changes of articular cartilage after femoral trochleoplasty, trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. Twelve small mixed dogs who had grade I or II medial patellar luxation were used. The days that the dog had partial and full weight bearing were checked and histopathological changes 49 and 90 days after surgery were observed. The dogs had partial weight bearing in 3~6 days postoperatively and full weight bearing in 20~24 days. After femoral trochlepoplasty, the articular surface was irregular and rough, but smooth after trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. Histopathologic examination performed on the 49th and 90th days after femoral trochleoplasty revealed that articular surface was occupied by fibrocartilage but the hyaline cartilages are preserved after trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. In trochlear wedge recession, the wedges of all cases were firmly attached to underlying subchondral bone which were indicating complete healing. The results of this study suggested that the trochlear wedge recession was the best chondroplasty for correcting patellar luxation.

The reconstruction of soft tissue defects of the sole requires to stand the force of weight bearing, provide sensation and adequacy for normal foot-wear. Although certain local flaps have been described and used for resurfacing the foot, extensive injury requires distant or free flaps for coverage. There is no doubt that the ideal tissue for resurfacing the sole is the plantar tissue itself. The specialized dermal-epidermal histology and fibrous septa of the subcutaneous layer gives its unique property to stand the pressure and to absorb the shock upon gait. This paper presents a case of reconstructing the sole that involves about 70% of the weight bearing portion. The combined medial plantar and dorsalis pedis chimeric free flap based on the medial plantar artery and medial plantar nerve adds another dimension in resurfacing the weight bearing sole of moderate to large sized defects.
Purpose: We investigated the effects of single-leg stance training on standing balance and mobility in patients with subacute hemiplegia. Methods: Seventeen matched subjects were assigned randomly to the experimental group or the control group. The experimental group comprising of 8 subjects received single-leg stance training and conventional physical therapy interventions 5 times per week for 4 weeks. The control group comprising of 9 subjects received only conventional physical therapy interventions 5 times per week for 4 weeks. Outcome measures were assessed before and after 4 weeks of intervention using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), gait speed, and weight bearing index of the affected side. Results: Both the exercise groups showed significant improvements in BBS, gait speed, and weight bearing index (p<0.05). After 4 weeks of intervention, there were statistically significant differences in BBS and weight bearing index between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that conventional physical therapy interventions along with single-leg stance training could be more effective than conventional physical therapy alone for improving standing balance and mobility in patients with subacute hemiplegia.
In general, amputation has been performed in the treatment of diabetic foot which doesn't respond to the conservative treatment. We have evaluated the existence of post-operative infection, the morbidity of donor site, the degree of recovery of sensation, weight bearing ambulation and recurrence in the 6 cases(5 patients) of diabetic foot patients among the 230 cases of free flap transfer done in our department. In all cases of free flap transfer to diabetic foot, 100% of survival rate was shown. The sensory recovery was more than average of 40% of the area of the transferred flap, and two points discrimination was shown average of 5cm as a result. In all cases, no evidence of post-operative infection was discovered and the weight bearing gradually became easier, and at the average of 5 months after operation, the full weight bearing ambulation became possible. If the infection of diabetic foot and the level of blood sugar could be controlled successfully, the free flap transfer could be considered one of the treatment option to avoid amputation.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of self-volar gliding combined with a strap and wrist distraction on pain and the active and passive wrist extension range of motion (ROM) in subjects with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing of the hand. Methods: Thirty subjects (14 males and 16 females) with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing through the hand participated in this study. The two different self-volar gliding techniques were performed for each group. Self-volar gliding using a strap (SVGS) and SVGS and wrist distraction (SVGSD) were performed five times for one week for each group. The active and passive ROM of wrist extension and the peak pressure pushed by the hand at pain (PPHP) were measured. An independent t-test was used to compare the improvements of these elements between the two different self-volar gliding techniques. The level of statistical significance was at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The active and passive ROM of wrist extension and PPHP were greater in both self-volar gliding groups after the one week intervention. On the other hand, these parameters were greater in the SVGSD group than in the SVGS group (p<0.05) Conclusion: SVGSD is recommended to improve the active and passive ROM of wrist extension and PPHP in subjects with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing of the hand.

This study aims to investigate the effects of 4 weeks visual biofeedback training on the knee joint angle and muscle activities of lower extremity. The participants in this study were 15 volunteers with hyperextended knee. To improve the hyperextended knee, visual biofeedback training was used during 4 weeks. The training is an exercise to maintain the balance between the anterior weight bearing and posterior weight bearing of the plantar foot. The knee joint angle significantly increased and the muscle activity of tibialis anterior was significantly decreased after visual biofeedback training. It was confirmed that visual biofeedback training of correcting hyperextended knee through the information on the plantar pressure distribution has a therapeutic effect.
Although total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has increased considerably in the past ten years, reflecting improvements in implant design and survivorship, the clinical outcomes have been less satisfactory than total hip or total knee arthroplasties. Several issues under debate include postoperative management and rehabilitation in TAA. Especially, there is no consensus or evidence for the most appropriate postoperative management and rehabilitation for patients undergoing TAA. This study was therefore undertaken to suggest appropriate postoperative management and rehabilitation in TAA, after reviewing published articles and focusing on the following topics: prehabilitation, hospital stay, immobilization type and duration, weight-bearing management, pharmacological treatment, and adopted rehabilitation protocols. In previous studies, the postoperative management and rehabilitation proposed depended on the surgeon's preference, the patient's characteristics, and the associated surgical procedures performed after TAA. Nonetheless, our research indicates the best approach is to include a prehabilitation program, immobilization in the early postoperative stage (2~4 weeks), range of motion exercise with partial weight-bearing ambulation, followed by full weight-bearing ambulation after six weeks. Further studies are required to develop a standardized rehabilitation protocol and improve the overall quality of care after TAA.
