  • While all-aluminum front end carriers have been frequently used by major foreign auto-makers, the carriers domestically produced are typically hybrid types. It is understood that higher fuel efficiency due to weight reduction can be achieved by using aluminum carriers because of aluminum's light weight. Moreover, aluminum is expected to posess high corrosion resistance and recyling rate. As a first step to enhance feasibility of domestic production of all-aluminum carriers, several carriers made by advanced auto makers are examined and compared. Besides basic characteristics such as appearance and weight, physical properties including composition, strength and elongation are carefully analyzed to obtain critical design and process factors.

  • Purpose: This study, using a pre-posttest design of non-equivalence comparative groups, was done to determine effects of KC (kangaroo care) on weight and SH (stress hormone) of premature infants. Method: Participants were 31 premature infants assigned to KC(14) or CG(control group)(17). Data were collected from June 2006 to February 2007. KC was given for 60 minutes at a time, Mon, Wed, and Fri for a 10 times. Body weight was measured at a fixed time daily and serum cortisol was examined as part of routine blood testing, frequent for premature infants. Results: The weight for infants in the KC group was higher than the control. The difference was significant between both the two groups, and the 2 measurement times(F=12.7, p=.001). SH(cortisol) in infants of KC group decreased than CG, but there was no valid difference from the statistical viewpoint. Conclusion: The result of the study suggest that KC contributes to weight increase in premature infants and also that KC is effective for SH reduction in spite of the lack of statistical validity. Therefore, our conclusion is that KC can be used as an independent nursing intervention for development and advance of premature infants.

  • In resent years, engineering thermoplastics represent a means for designers to integrate parts, facilitate assembly, reduce weight and lower the costs of their parts to improve the fuel efficiency and competitiveness of the cars. Thermoplastic turbo charger intake hose is one of most sophisticated application in thermoplastics under the hood. Used as part of weight & cost reduction and performance improvement program, thermoplastic turbo charger intake hose has been developed as rubber and metal replacement. For optimized product, NVH performance is a important criteria while keeping same durability required with current system. Though a number of studies have been conducted on the resonator hose and its analytical models, the most of studies were focused on transmission loss itself. This paper presents contribution of vehicle interior noise according to design parameters like profile, bellows type, bellows position, material characteristic. And we will review the design guidance for optimized product of thermoplastic turbo charger intake hose.

  • Compact system cameras (CSCs) are commonly used nowadays and feature enhanced video functions and thin yet light interchangeable lenses. They differ from digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras in their lack of mirror boxes. CSCs, however, have autofocus (AF) speeds lower than those of conventional DSLRs, requiring weight reduction of their AF groups. To ensure the marketability of large telephoto zoom lenses with fixed f/2.8 regardless of field angle variation, in particular, light weight AF groups are essential. In this paper, we introduce a paraxial optical design method and present a new, large, telephoto zoom lens with f/2.8 regardless of the field angle variation, plus a lightweight AF group consisting of only one lens. Using the basic paraxial optical design and optimization methods, we fabricated a new and lighter zoom lens system, including a single-lens, lightweight AF group with almost the same performance.

  • As the spread of COVID-19 continues, cleanliness and quarantine are emphasized in daily life. If foreign substances enter through the shoe sole when using public facilities, cleanliness may deteriorate and various infections may occur. To prevent this, shoe sole cleaners that filter out foreign substances have been developed. In this study, a design that satisfies structural safety was presented by selecting a new material and updating the design parameter to reduce the weight of the shoe sole cleaner. To evaluate the structural safety, a finite element analysis under selected design loads was performed. Through design improvement and stress analysis, a model that was approximately 85% lighter than the existing model was developed.

  • In this study, the weight and the connections type layout of low-rise eccentrically braced frame (EBF) have been optimized based on performance-based design method. For this purpose, two objective functions were defined based on two different aspects on rigid connections, in one of which minimization and in the other one, maximization of the number of rigid connections was considered. These two objective functions seek to increase the area under the pushover curve, in addition to the reduction of the weight and selection of the optimum connections type layout. The performance of these objective functions was investigated in optimal design of a three-story eccentrically braced frame, using two meta-heuristic algorithms: Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) and Enhanced Vibrating Particles System (EVPS). Then, the reliability indices of the optimal designs for both objective functions were calculated for the story lateral drift limits using Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. Based on the reliability assessment results of the optimal designs and taking the three levels of safety into account, the final designs were selected and their specifications were compared.

  • This study was designed to examine the effects of weight reduction programme(WRP) for obese primary school students on serum lipid level. This research used non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design that was conducted on two groups comprising 5th and 6th graders: an experimental group that received 12-week long WRP that combines diet, exercise and behavior modification therapy and the control group that did only rope-jumping. The collected data were analysed using ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, Pairwise Comparsons by SPSS 18.0 Programme. It was proven that the WRP of this study was effective in lowering the total cholesterol(F=4.21, p=.049) and triglyceride(F=4.25, p=.049). WRP may be used as a basis for further studies that may be conducted after intervening the motivation level of the study subjects.

  • Process design is carried out for a press forming of a CTBA in the rear suspension assembly based on the result of the finite element analysis. The analysis simulates the two-stage stamping process with the initial design and it fully reveals the unfavorable mechanism which develops inferiorities during forming. In this paper, a new design guideline is proposed to modify the process and tool shapes for a single-stage forming process. With the improved tool design, prototypes are fabricated after several try-out processes. Results of the durability tests show that the design requirement of the part is satisfied and the effective weight reduction is achieved.

  • Topology optimization has been widely used for the optimal structure design for weight reduction and high performance. Since the result of three-dimensional topology optimization is represented by the discrete material distribution in finite elements, it is hard to interpret from a design point of view. In this paper, the method for interpreting three-dimensional topology optimization resuIt into a series of cross-sectional curve representation is proposed and interfaced with the existing CAD system for the practical use. The concept of node density and virtual grid is introduced to transform element density values into grid density and material boundaries in each cross section are identified based on the element volume rate to satisfy the amount of material specified in the original design intent. Design exampIes show that three-dimensional topology result can be converted into a form of curve CAD model and the seamless interface with CAD software can be achieved.
