The callus formation from inferior leaf of Aloe saponaria was induced in M & S medium supplemented with 10-30 ${\mu}M$ NAA (${\alpha}$-naphthalene acetic acid) and 3-7 ${\mu}M$ kinetin under incubation in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 6 weeks. The hot water extract ($100^{\circ}C$, 24 hrs) from cultured callus was obtained and the components analysis for the extract were examined to determine the callus can synthesized the bioactive component such as Aloe polysaccharide. The freeze dried extract contained the sugar of 53.2%, protein of 7.3%, ash of 18.5% and water of 21% (w/w). Two fractions (Fr-I and Fr-II) were obtained by Sepharose CL-4B gel permeation chromatography and Fr-I, major fraction was further purified with dialysis. From sugar analysis by TLC and GC, the purified Fr-I fraction consisted of glucose (77.6%), galactose (17.7%), mannose (4.7%, w/w) and uronic acid (trace). The molecular weight of purified Fr-I fraction determined by GPC was about 110 kDa.
Environment-friendly composites reinforced with bagasse fiber (BF), a kind of natural fiber as the remains from squeezed sugarcane, were fabricated by injection molding and press molding. As appropriate matrices for injection molding and press molding, polypropylene (PP) and polycaprolactone-cornstarch (PCL-C) were selected, as a typical recyclable resin and biodegradable resin, respectively. The mechanical properties of BF/PP composites were investigated in view of fiber mass fraction and injection molding conditions. And the mechanical properties and the biodegradation of BF/PCL composites were also evaluated. In the case of injection molding, the flexural modulus increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction, and the mechanical properties decreased with an increase in cylinder temperature due to the thermal degradation of BF. The optimum conditions increasing the flexural properties and the impact strength were $90^{\circ}C$ mold temperature, 30 s injection interval, and in the range of 165 to $185^{\circ}C$ cylinder temperature. On the other hand, as to BF/PCL-C fully-green composites, both the flexural properties and the impact strength increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction. It is considered that the BF compressed during preparation could result in the enhancement in mechanical properties. The results of the biodegradability test showed the addition of BF caused the acceleration of weight loss, which increased further with increasing fiber content. This reveals that the addition and the quantities of BF could promote the biodegradation of fully-green composites.
In the previous reports, we selected 80% MeOH extract of 7 herbs including Scutellariae Radix(SR), Paeoniae Radix Rubra(PRR), Moutan Cortex(MC), Angelicae Gigantis Radix(AGR), Crataegi Fructus(CF), Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam(BCT) and Cinnamomi Ramulus(CR), which exhibited the inhibitory effect on HMG-CoA reductase and DPPH free radical scavenging effect in vitro, and antihyperlipidemic effects on antihyperlipidemic rats induced by Triton WR 1339 in vivo. Among them, SR, MC, AGR and BCT showed significant suppression of elevated serum LDL-cholesterol level, and AGR and CF showed significant liver weight increase on high cholesterol diet induced hyperlipidemic mice. And, SR, PRR, AGR, BCT and CR significantly suppressed the elevated serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels on corn oil induced hyperlipidemic rats. Then, in order to research new antihyperlipidemic agents from the oriental medicinal herbs, we chose SR, AGR, CR and BCT which have the antihyperlipidemic effect in vitro and in vivo, and those herbs were systematically fractionated with organic solvent. EtOAc fraction of SR, hexane fraction of BCT, AGR and chloroform fraction of CR exhibited remarkably inhibitory effect on HMG-CoA reductase activity.

Colorants in green tea were extracted freeze-dried and analyzed to investigate the possibility of using as a natural dye. Fractionation of the colorants was carried out by column chromatograpy. Colorants in green tea were eluted into five fractions. All the fractions except fraction F2 showed absorption peakat 280nm. Fraction f2 showed absorption peak at 270nm and broad peak at 350nm, From the IR analysis it is speculated that fractions F2-F5 having similar stucture but different molecular weight are catechis. Silk fabrics dyes with fractions F1-F4 showed yellowish red color while sample dyed with fraction F5 showed red color. The colorants from green tea infusion was applied to silk wool nylon cotton and rayon fabrices. It showed relatively good affinity to protein and polyamide fibers bur low affinity to cellulose and regenerated cellulose fibers.

The leaf of Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z. (Gramineae) has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a antipyretics, antitussives and antidiuretcs, etc, in Korea, China and Japan. In order to investigate the effects on antilipoperoxidation and liver protective effect, the leaf of Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z. was extracted by water and then fractionated with butanol. The water extract and BuOH soluble fraction strongly exhibited antilipoperoxidatant effect in rat liver homogenate intoxicated with $CCl_4$. The BuOH fraction significantly suppressed the increases of s-GOT, s-GPT and s-LDH activities in injuried rats induced by $CCl_4$. And the BuOH fraction inhibited significantly the decrease of the body weight and showed the antilipoperoxidatant effect in liver and kidney in $CCl_4$ intoxicated rats.
Electrokinetic remediation technique offers the opportunity to extract heavy metals from soils with high plasticity. The experiment demonstrated the applicability of electrokinetic remediation on metal-mining deposit and the decision of the enhancement method for four kinds of bench-scale studies. According to the sequential extraction of heavy metals in the "I" mining deposit, Pb and Cu were mostly associated with residual fraction and Zn and Cd were associated with water soluble and residual fraction. Therefore, removable fractions by electrokinetic technology was determined by the sum of the fraction of water soluble and exchangeable, which is Cu : 19.53%, Pb : 1.42%, Cd : 52.82%, Zn : 57.28%, respectively. When considering electrical potential, volume of effluent, soil pH, and eliminated rate of contaminant, results determined by sum of each weight were Citric aic+SDS (13) > 0.1N $HNO_3$ (10) > HAc (8) > DDW (4). Therefore, citric acid and SDS mixed solution was determined the best enhancing agent for the remediation of metal mining deposit.g deposit.

The number of protozoa and VFA content in the rumen fluid, in situ disappearance and turnover rate were examined with four rumen-fistulated cattle given either sugarcane stalk or Ruzi grass hay in order to clarify the manner of rumen digestion of sugarcane stalk. Cattle were given either sugarcane stalk or Ruzi grass hay at 1.0% of body weight level with commercial concentrate feed. Feeding sugarcane stalk reduced acetate content and increased propionate and butyrate contents in rumen fluid. While rapidlysoluble fraction of sugarcane stalk was 42%, the insoluble but potentially degradable fraction was only 17%. This clearly showed that sugarcane stalk mainly consisted of water soluble fraction (i.e. sugar) and tough fiber (i.e. bagasse). The ruminal degradation rate of both Ruzi grass hay and sugarcane stalk was lower in the animal given sugarcane stalk in comparison with those given Ruzi grass hay. While the turnover rate of liquid phase was about 50% higher in the animals given sugarcane stalk than in the animals given Ruzi grass hay, that of the solid phase was about 40% lower in the animals given sugarcane stalk. The effective degradability of DM of sugarcane stalk was higher than that of Ruzi grass hay. Sugarcane would be a promising roughage for ruminants in the tropics especially, in the dry season.
The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) and n-butanol fraction (NBF) of ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri aerial parts were screened for hepatoprotective activity and in vivo antioxidant activity on ethanol-induced hepatotoxic rats. Ethyl acetate fraction was found to be more potent even though both the fractions were endowed with significant hepatoprotective activity. EAF and NBF were investigated for hepatoprotective activity in albino rats at 300 mg/kg, p.o. dose and compared with standard drug Silymarin (25 mg/kg, p.o.). Results show that both the fractions were effective in blunting ethanol-induced enhanced activities of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, level of serum bilirubin (both total and direct), liver weight loss and was also effective in reducing ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the fractions could also enhance ethanol-induced suppressed activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and decreased level of reduced glutathione. Results of hepatocellular damage caused by ethanol and its recovery by EAF and NBF, suggest that they might be considered as a potential source of natural hepatoprotective agents, which could be related to the free radical scavenging properties of saponins present in high concentration in the fractions.

To investigate antitumor constituents of higher fungi, the carpophores of Polyporus giganteus Pers. ex. Fr. (81 g, dry weight) which were collected in Indiana, U. S. A. were examined for antitumor activity. Two protein-bound-polysaccharide fractions (I and II) were prepared from the hot water extract and one fraction (III) from the 0.1 N NaOH extract of the carpophores. The antitumor effect of each fraction was tested against sarcoma 180 implanted subcutaneously in female ICR mice. Of three fractions, Fraction II showed 85.2% inhibition ratio at the dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 10 days and was named gigantan. Gigantan was found to contain 59% polysaccharide and 27% protein. Its polysaccharide moity was a heteroglycan that consisted of mainly glucose (89.3%), galactose (7.7%), minaose (2.0%) and fructose (1.0%).
The ethanol extract of the Crotalaria juncea seeds, which showed promising antispermatogenic and antiandrogenic activities in albino mice, was taken up further for the isolation of the active fractions present in it. Two fractions that were obtained from thin layer chromatography were subjected for testing to know their antispermatogenic and antiandrogenic activities. After preliminary trials the fraction I showed maximum antifertility activity at the dose level of 200 mg/kg body weight when administered orally to the rats for 50 days. The fraction I was found to affect spermatogenesis as well as the endocrine functions of the testis as indicated by gravimetric, histopathological and biochemical changes. Further this fraction has caused degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules and Leydig cells of the testis. The accessory reproductive organs like epididymis, seminal vesicles, vas deferens, prostrate, Cowper's gland and Levator Ani muscle showed significant malfunction. Cauda epididymal sperm count and sperm motility were reduced significantly. The treatment has also resulted in increase in the cholesterol level and alkaline phosphatase activity, and decrease in protein, glycogen, sialic acid contents and acid phosphatase activity in testis. It is noteworthy that RIA studies have shown significant reduction in serum FSH, LH and testosterone. Scanning electron microscopic observations revealed abnormalities in sperm structure.
