A Corpus-based Analysis of EFL Learners' Use of Discourse Markers in Cross-cultural Communication

  • This study examines the use of discourse markers in cross-cultural communication between EFL learners in an e-learning environment. The study analyzes the use of discourse markers in a corpus of an interactive web with a bulletin board system through which college students of English at Japanese and Korean universities interacted with each other discussing the topics of local and global issues. It compares the use of discourse markers in the learners' corpus to that of a native English speakers' corpus. The results indicate that discourse markers are useful interactional devices to structure and organize discourse. EFL learners are found to display more frequent use of referentially and cognitively functional discourse markers and a relatively rare use of other markers. Native speakers are found to use a wider variety of discourse markers for different functions. Suggestions are made for using computer corpora in understanding EFL learners' language difficulties and helping them become more interactionally competent speakers.

  • Even though studies on improvement of programming language teaching and learning have been made continuously and many education courseware for programming languages have been developed, computer programming learners' performance is relatively poor. Thus, in this paper, we designed and realized a web- based visual programming learning system by applying cognitive apprenticeship model to improve effect of computer programming education and then put this system into practice in class. As a result, we suggested that it can have positive influence upon learners' performance and their attitude.

  • Recently, research about an electronic attendance-absence recording system has been actively carried out using smart devices. Using an electronic attendance-absence recording system, professors can check their students' attendance on a real-time basis and manage their attendance records. In this paper, we proposed a real-time electronic attendance-absence recording system using face detection and face recognition based on web application. It can solve the spatial, temporal, cost issues belong to electronic attendance-absence recording system using AIDC(Automatic Identification and Data Capture). A proposed system is running on web server and made by HTML5(Hyper Text Markup Language ver.5). So professor connect to server using mobile web browser on mobile device and real-time manage electronic attendance-absence recording with real-time send or receive image data. In addition, the proposed system has an advantage capable of installation and operation, regardless of the operating system because it operates based on the Python flask framework.

  • 듣고 발화하는 과정을 통해 언어를 재구성해가는 건청아동과는 달리 청각장애 아동은 청력의 상실로 인해 언어습득의 선천적 매커니즘이 작용될 수 없으며 이는 청각장애아동의 언어능력향상을 위한 웹기반언어학습이 의도적으로 구성되어야 항을 의미한다. 동작이나 상황을 나타내는 말을 동적으로 구현하여 사물 및 행동에 대한 관찰력을 증진시키고 주도적으로 상황언어를 익힐 수 있도록 유도하는 시스템 구성이 필요하며 대체사고 전략을 활용하고 얼굴표정과 반대어와 대비어를 강조해야 함이 웹기반 언어학습을 통한 청각장애아동의 문법적 오류를 감소시키는 효과적 방법임을 이 논문을 통해 제안하고자 한다.

  • 본 연구에서는 장애인은 물론 일반 어린이들이 쉽고 재미있게 수화 언어를 배울 수 있게 도와주는 구연 동화 시스템을 구현하고자 한다. 본 시스템은 흥미를 유발할 수 있도록 이미지나 배경 소리와 같은 멀티미디어 자료와 동영상을 포함한다. 아울러, 본 시스템은 인터넷 상에서 누구나 쉽게 접근하여 배울 수 있고 단어별 수화 학습이 가능하도록 HTML 문서 형식을 가지며, 여기에 XML를 도입하여 사용자의 편리성과 단어에 대한 수화DB가 없는 경우를 고려하여 자동 지화가 생성되도록 구현한다.

  • It is not sufficient to give a lecture in programming language without programming practice since lectures on programming must be given at lecture room with H/W and S/W for programming. In this paper, learning for Visual Basic programming has been designed and embodied with the leveled learning system in order to give an effective and positive result to both teacher and learner under the constructivism theory of education (Problem Based learning, Self-Directed learning) for the theoretical basis of the seventh education curriculum. We implemented a web courseware for Visual Basic programming using ActiveX and Tutor System. As the result of education using this courseware, it is verified as a leveled education method to adapt the learning ability of individual students, and it can raise the achievement, enthusiasm of learning and provide various opportunity of education with this various education methods. Also it enhances the problem solving ability and the logical thinking power by providing students with error correction learning.

  • In accordance with wide spread of personal computer and the expansion of network access, the use of internet has been popular and communication by text message is much more normal than that of voice and image. Accordingly, the side effect of communication language brings about gap between diverse social class, the isolation of communication between generations, abusive expressions, obstacles of juvenile mental development and so on. It appears by the form of slang and vulgar word and has a negative effect on education of mother tongue and usage of children's real language. To deal with these problems, we developed new web-based education system through the analysis of learners' requirement; "Barun Mal, Goeun Mal class". So we verified its efficiency to apply to real class. We also found that this system increased the learners' interest and educational effectiveness. Also, this system contributed to the proper use of language.

  • According to the appearance of various virtual websites using multimedia technologies for engineering education, the internet applications in engineering education have drawn much interests. But unidirectional communication, simple text/image based webpages and tedious learning process without motivation etc. have made the lowering of educational efficiency in cyberspace. Thus, to cope with these difficulties this paper presents a web-based educational Flash movies based on ActionScript language for understanding the principles of the computer system architecture. The proposed Flash movies provides the improved learning methods which can enhance the interests of learners. The results of this paper can be widely used to improve the efficiency of cyberlectures in the cyber university. Several sample Flash movies are illustrated to show the validity of the proposed learning method.

  • Humanities knowledge makes the learners overcome the boundaries of study and can be applied variously by means of contents for study. This paper suggests application contents plans designed as the learning tools for blended learning, which can be sure of the possibility to the extension of other fields. Literary education with application contents has effects followings: First, smart device based on the web under the ubiquitous circumstances has the information system like the neuron's. So the application selects the necessary information and makes the contents for infusion into the education. Also it provides with more abundant and extended information system. With this approach, learners are able to get further literary knowledge and promote the ability for tapping them for new knowledge as well. Lastly, literature applied to the class with web contents is based on the foundation that creates new knowledge necessary for culture, arts, and so on. As a result, the education using web contents achieves the boundless of study, which is the final goal of the blended learning.

Application of Authoware for the Oceanography Learning System Based on WBI (오소웨어를 이용한 해양학습교육매체의 제작에 관한 연구)

  • According to the development of internet with Web, WBI has greatly influence on the present educational society. However, it is difficutly to design the web of the dynamic motions of graphics or animation using general programming technique based on high or low level language. Recently, Mecromedia Company supported a tool that is called Authoware which is the leading visual rich-media authoring solution for creating Web and online learning applications, to solve the problem easily. In the paper, using the the Authoware we tried to develop a web page about tidal variations due to sea level change and intertidal zone variations using the Authorware 5.1. To do this, we used the ocean survey data of Iho beach and the tidal level data based on Tidal Tables of Cheju harbor. The results showed that the Authorware was very useful to construct the simulation of tidal phenomena on web. Therefore, the Authorware can be applied to the simulation related with animation and dynamic motions for the other WBI objective.
