  • It is not easy that we visualize the large volume data stored in the every client computers of the web environment. One solution is as follows. First we compress volume data, second store that in the database server, third transfer that to client computer, fourth visualize that with direct-volume-rendering in the client computer. In this case, we usually use wavelet transform for compressing large data. This paper reports the experiments for acquiring the wavelet bases and the compression ratios fit for the above processing paradigm. In this experiments, we compress the volume data Engine, CThead, Bentum into 50%, 10%, 5%, 1%, 0.1%, 0.03% of the total data respectively using Harr, Daubechies4, Daubechies12 and Daubechies20 wavelets, then visualize that with direct-volume-rendering, afterwards evaluate the images with eyes and image comparison metrics. When compression ratio being low the performance of Harr wavelet is better than the performance of the other wavelets, when compression ratio being high the performance of Daubechies4 and Daubechies12 is better than the performance of the other wavelets. When measuring with eyes the good compression ratio is about 1% of all the data, when measuring with image comparison metrics, the good compression ratio is about 5-10% of all the data.

  • Geo-features play a key role in object-oriented or feature-based geo-processing system. So the strategy for how-to-model and how-to-manage the geo-features builds the main architecture of the entire system and also supports the efficiency and functionality of the system. Unlike the conventional 2D geo-processing system, geo-features in 3D GIS have lots to be considered to model regarding the efficient manipulation and analysis and visualization. When the system is running on the Web, it should also be considered that how to leverage the level of detail and the level of automation of modeling in addition to the support for client side data interoperability. We built a set of 3D geo-features, and each geo-feature contains a set of aspatial data and 3D geo-primitives. The 3D geo-primitives contain the fundamental modeling data such as the height of building and the burial depth of gas pipeline. We separated the additional modeling data on the geometry and appearance of the model from the fundamental modeling data to make the table in database more concise and to allow the users more freedom to represent the geo-object. To get the users to build and exchange their own data, we devised a fie format called VGFF 2.0 which stands for Virtual GIS File Format. It is to describe the three dimensional geo-information in XML(extensible Markup Language). The DTD(Document Type Definition) of VGFF 2.0 is parsed using the DOM(Document Object Model). We also developed the authoring tools for users can make their own 3D geo-features and model and save the data to VGFF 2.0 format. We are now expecting the VGFF 2.0 evolve to the 3D version of SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) especially for 3D GIS on the Web.

  • EDISON is a web-based platform that provides easy and convenient use of simulation software on high-performance computers. One of the most important roles of a computational science platform, such as EDISON, is to post-process and represent the simulation results data so that the user can easily understand the data. We interviewed EDISON users and collected requirements for post-processing and represent of simulation results, which included i) flexible data representation, ii) supporting various data representation components, and iii) flexible and easy development of view template. In previous studies, it was difficult to develop or contribute data representation components, and the view templates were not able to be shared or recycled. This causes a problem that makes it difficult to create ecosystems for the representation tool development of numerous simulation software. EDISON-VIEW is a framework for post-processing and representing simulation results produced from the EDISON platform. This paper proposes various methods used in the design and development of the EDISON-VIEW framework to solve the above requirements and problems. We have verified its usefulness by applying it to simulation software in various fields such as material, computational fluid dynamics, computational structural dynamics, and computational chemistry.

  • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become popular as an approach for the identification of large numbers of phenotype-associated variants. However, differences in genetic architecture and environmental factors mean that the effect of variants can vary across populations. Understanding population genetic diversity is valuable for the investigation of possible population specific and independent effects of variants. EvoSNP-DB aims to provide information regarding genetic diversity among East Asian populations, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Non-redundant SNPs (1.6 million) were genotyped in 54 Korean trios (162 samples) and were compared with 4 million SNPs from HapMap phase II populations. EvoSNP-DB provides two user interfaces for data query and visualization, and integrates scores of genetic diversity (Fst and VarLD) at the level of SNPs, genes, and chromosome regions. EvoSNP-DB is a web-based application that allows users to navigate and visualize measurements of population genetic differences in an interactive manner, and is available online at [http://biomi.cdc.go.kr/EvoSNP/].

  • Active catalog is a kind of digital content that enables consumers to test the functions and features of products from their PCs as if they were using it in real life, by simulating the actions and responses of the product. This new type of interactive digital content can be used extensively to make sales personnel training manuals, sales tools, user manuals and user trouble shooting documents. With active catalogs, companies will be able to compare different designs, show actions according to different functions, and evaluate user reaction to new products without having to produce a single physical prototype or mock-up. At the same time, consumers will be able to understand and 'operate' the product and make well-informed purchase decisions. In this paper, we present a visual event-driven modeling tool, PlayMo, for creating active catalogs, analyze the advantages of using PlayMo, describe the event-driven method used by PlayMo and also introduce two enhanced characteristics of the Event Flow Chart with which the events in PlayMo are structured. Interactive digital content by using the PlayMo3D makes easy, simple and effective design for e-learning, e-catalogue, e-marketing/sales, e-prototyping, customer support, etc. Through its application-ready 3D function visualization solution, engineers and designers can rapidly turn a CAD design model into a 3D interactive virtual product, and the effective function prototyping job can be also completed within a minute.

  • Viewed in the rate of change in the web environment, it is very difficult to remain the initial planning at the time until the time of launch, and there is a need for a method to accommodate changes and satisfy market demands during the development process. Unlike the traditional waterfall approach of maintaining initial planning, scrum is one of the agile methodologies that enables flexibility to respond to changes in the market and customers' needs and drive customer satisfaction and business success. However, to apply the scrum to a project in actual, the practice method itself is relatively simple but not easy to apply. The reason is that the members of the organization need to understand and participate in scrum's philosophy and principles and the continuous observation and change management should be carried out. Therefore, in this paper, we presented the feature dashboard and customized scrum methodology to enable continuous observation and change management using visibility, and we shared the case that periodically reflected inspection and adaptation with the explanation of the main points. Also, based on the experience with participants, the strengths and weakness of the feature dashboard and the customized scrum methodology are summarized.
