  • This paper presents a 3D-conferencing system as a prototype implementation of concurrent and distributed engineering environment using CORBA-Java and SDAI-Java. The system consists of some client and server objects that communicate with each other via ORB. The server objects use lightweight version of current working draft of SDAI-Java to access STEP product data models, and the client objects provide user-friendly graphical interface. The proposed system can be used for communicating with 3D CAD data between remote designers, manufactures and customers regardless of he H/W or S/W platforms they use.

  • The ubiquitous environment is to support people in their everyday life in an inconspicuous and unobtrusive way. This environment requires information such as the person, his/her preferences, and habits which is available in the ubiquitous system. In this paper, we propose the context aware system that can provide the tailored information service for user in ubiquitous computing environment. Our system architecture is divided into 4 domain models such as context awareness, presentation, interface and inference domain. Each domain model can perform some predefined tasks independently. And we suggest the hybrid algorithm combined with fuzzy and Bayesian method in order to reason what is the suitable information for user. We show the possibility for the real application through applying the system to the TGA (Tour Guide Assistant) for Kyoungju historical site.

  • We developed an on-line lathe simulator which can be used for a CAM education on the internet. Previously, VRML or static images such as JPG have been commonly used to achieve the same goal. With the 3D tool like VRML, it was possible to describe the movement of 3D object effectively. However, G-code based modeling and real-time visualization for the cutting process including parts being machined could not be accomplished. By using the simulator, we can machine a part with G-code input from a user or modeler, and parts being machined can be visualized in 2D as well as 3D. The developed system is based on EMCO lathe from Eshed and can be used through a web browser.

  • This study is aimed at the development of a comprehensive web-based partial differential equation solver (WPDES) using multidimensional finite element method, which can be operated on the basis of world wide web. Overall issues of engineering and environmental information management and facility control could be implemented using this solver. This paper describes the development technique of the model, which is first part on development of partial differential equation solver. Conventional commercial general solver of computational fluid dynamics problems were investigated. All the relevant environmental models were analyzed to develop integrated environmental management system using WPDES. The governing equations and the parameters of investigated models were analyzed and integrated. Several numerical modules were invented for each partial differential term in partial differential equation of many related modeling problems. Each module was coded in the fashion of object oriented method, and was combined independently for the overall governing equation. WPDES has unique characteristic, which can analyze the problem through the suitable combination of modules without development of additional models for each environment problem with different governing equation, main variables, and parameters.

  • The study proposes component models in developing an efficient platform for internet-based structural analysis. Since a structural analysis requires an operation of complicated algorithms, a client-side computation using X-Internet is preferred to a server-side computation to provide a flexible service for multi-users. To compete with the user-friendly interfaces of available commercial analysis programs, a window-based interface using Smart Client was applied. Also, component-based programming was performed with the considerations on reusability and expandability so that active Preparation for future change or modification could be feasible. The components describe the whole system by subdivision and simplification. In the relationship between upper-and lower-level components and also in the relationship between components and objects, a unified interface was used to clearly classify the connection between the libraries. By performing data communication between different types of platforms using XML WebService, a conner-stone of data transfer is proposed for the future integrated CAE. The efficiency of the developed platform has been examined through a sample structural analysis and design on planar truss structures.

  • Old maps are a cultural heritage of recorded information with humanities materials and scientific value. However, there is no sufficient study on the development of web-based information system using old maps to provide the old map information. In this study, we analyze the status of the old map information on the website of the main institutions, construct the web-based information systems to provide the unified map information efficiently and systematically. It is not easy to standardize the data categories and information searching method because of the diversity and complexity of old map. So, the importance of engineering information management is growing. Therefore, the attempting to computerized humanistic old map information and the integrated approach is very important and necessary. This study provide an opportunity to combine the humanities and engineering through the convergence between information technology, humanities, and computational engineering.

  • Most current machine vision systems for industrial inspection were developed with one specific task in mind. Hence, these systems are inflexible in the sense that they cannot easily be adapted to other applications. In this paper, a general vision system framework has been developed that can be easily adapted to a variety of industrial web inspection problems. The objective of this system is to automatically locate and identify \\\"defects\\\" on the surface of the material being inspected. This framework is designed to be robust, to be flexible, and to be as computationally simple as possible. To assure robustness this framework employs a combined strategy of top-down and bottom-up control, hierarchical defect models, and uncertain reasoning methods. To make this framework flexible, a modular Blackboard framework is employed. To minimize computational complexity the system incorporates a simple multi-thresholding segmentation scheme, a fuzzy logic focus of attention mechanism for scene analysis operations, and a partitioning if knowledge that allows concurrent parallel processing during recognition.cognition.

  • There has been an influx of traders and researchers eager to gain a better understanding of the market due to the rapid growth of the FOREX market. Traders with varying degree of experience are also often inundated with information, analysis methods as well as trading rules when making a trading decision on buying/selling a currency exchange pair. Thus, this paper reviews the current computational tools and analysis methods used within the FOREX trading community and proposes the development of a web-based trading platform with e-learning features to support beginners. Novice traders could also benefit from the use of the proposed e-learning trading platform as it helps them gain valuable knowledge and navigate the FOREX market in real-time. Even experienced traders would find it useful as the platform could be used for actual trading and acts as a reference point to understand the reasoning behind the certain technical analysis implementation that are still unclear to them.

  • This paper presents an integrated but open product development environment for distributed and collaborative design. The web-based framework, called DOME, allows designers to build integrated models using both local and distributed resources, and to collaborate by exchanging services in a network-centric product development environment. Thus, an integrated model can be created while each participant focuses on his or her own area of expertise. A design problem model is created by connecting modules, which represent specific system components, analysis capabilities/software, disciplines, or organizations relevant to the problem. The modules interact with each other using service exchanges based upon the CORBA standard communication protocol. The goal of this framework is tall provide the ability to rapidly construct integrated design problem models to facilitate collaborative design work, improve product quality and reduce development time. Ultimately, it should allow specialized engineering applications and design problem models to operate under a common design environment.

  • Modern technology drives the world, increasing performance while reducing labor and time expenses. Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) tracks employee's levels of exposure to radiation sources using dosimeters. According to legal compliance, workers wear dosimeters for three months and one month at the workplace. However, TAEC has problems in tracking, issuing and returning dosimeters because the existing tracking is done manually. The study intended to develop a Personal Dose Management System (PDMS) that processes and manages the data collected by dosimeters for easy and accurate records. During the requirements elicitation process, the study looked at the existing system. PDMS' requirement gathering included document reviews, user interviews, and focused group discussions. Development and testing of the system were implemented by applying the evolutionary prototyping technique. The system provides a login interface for system administrators, radiation officers, and Occupational Exposed Workers. The PDMS grants TAEC Staff access to monitor individual exposed workers, prints individual and institutional reports and manages workers' information. The system reminds the users when to return dosimeters to TAEC, generate reports, and facilitates dispatching and receiving dosimeters effectively. PDMS increases efficiency and effectiveness while minimizing workload, paperwork, and inaccurate records. Therefore, based on the results obtained from the system, it is recommended to use the system to improve dosimeter data management at the institution.
