  • Heterogeneous high performance computing systems are gaining acceptance as the environments for computational scientific simulations of various application fields. Those computing systems, however, have been mostly used with the legacy consoles, resulting in the severe decrement of accessibility and usability of heterogeneous computing assets. To solve this problem, this paper presents the design and implementation of web-based computational science simulation management program. The proposed program provides fundamental primitives including user authentication, data management, physical/virtual computing resource management, job management, etc. that can be used to manage different kinds of simulations efficiently, and also offers highly extensible feature through a modular plug-in architecture. We also present the best practical examples of applications (e.g., scientific simulation education and bio-medical) to confirm our program's effectiveness.

  • XML is an emerging internet standard for data representation and exchange on the web. Recently, many researches on storing XML documents are in progress. Since XML documents have an implicit semantic schema, it is difficult to store XML data into a DBMS or File System. This paper introduces XDOM, object repositories for the DOM object, which stores an object for persistency support. As XDOM does not require the burdensome design of a fixed schema unlike the legacy DBMS, can store schema-less XML documents. And it can help XML applications to access the DOM object transparently from the object repositories below memory. XDOM introduced in this paper is implemented in pure Java and evaluated using experiments.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to review, analyze, and learn from the most recent cases of plagiarism and to identify and promote ethical practices in research and publication. Research design, data, and methodology - This is a case study, an analytical approach, which focuses on analyzing the most recent cases of plagiarism to identify ethical issues and concerns in journal publication practices. Results - Despite the availability of many software and web-based applications and programs to detect plagiarism, there is no universal or perfect plagiarism detection application available to ease the editorial responsibility. Lack of understanding the concept and ignorance of plagiarism were the main reasons for the cases of plagiarism. Conclusions - Some of the plagiarism cases reveal a lack of knowledge in proper application of in-text citations and references, including quoting, requiting, paraphrasing, and citing sources, etc. Furthermore, the need for recognizing and considering the distorted and falsified primary and secondary research data as plagiarism is essential to enhance ethical practices in journal publication.

  • XML is widely used in various applications as the standard for representing and exchanging data on the Web. XML Schema is the standard schema for XML and an XML document generated based on the XML Schema is called 'Valid XML document'. The XML Schema validity should be guaranteed after the XML document is updated. In this paper, we design an efficient method that verifies XML Schema validity before update, and so eliminates unnecessary validations. Also, we propose validation algorithms for each update. In addition, we propose the mapping between XML data and XML Schema and a storage method for XML Schema in order to efficiently extract the schema information for the validation. Finally, we compare the performance of the validation according to the storage methods.

  • Even though the distance education via web has a great advantage to overcome time and space, its problem is that the management of trainees is not efficient compared with classroom and group education. This problem is a great obstacle to the objects and achievement standards of distance education, giving controversial arguments to the advocators of distance education. Distance educators need to monitor the trainees'participation and responses continuously and offer appropriate feedback to the trainees. However, the existing distance education system only focuses on teaching and learning activities, and as a result, the efficient management function of distance education is not available. Accordingly, the study attempts to find out the appropriate managing elements of distance teacher training in order to effectively achieve the goals of teacher training and the efficient management of distance education. Also, it proposes distance teacher training management system that offers appropriate feedback to trainees, applying the derived elements of distance teacher training to the training processes. To verify the efficiency of the system, hypotheses on related items of distance teacher education and learning types are suggested, and the achievement degree of learning and its relations are investigated through questionnaire of learning types. In addition, a system using UML which is the standard of object-oriented modeling language is devised, so. that mutual management, language independence and convenient development environment as well as reusability can be offered, and so the design standardization and efficient system realization could be achieved, while flexible change of system according to education process and computing environment is possible.

  • The primary objective of this study was to identify concrete contribution to the initial shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) hollow columns under lateral loading. Seven large-scale RC rectangular hollow column specimens were tested under monotonic or cyclic lateral loads. The most important design parameter was column length-to-depth aspect ratio ranging between 1.5 and 3.0, and the other test variables included web area ratio, hollow section ratio, and loading history. The tests showed that the initial shear strength reduced in a linear pattern as the column aspect ratio increased, and one specimen tested under cyclic loading achieved approximately 83% of the shear strength of the companion specimen under monotonic loading. Also, several pioneering shear models proposed around the world, all of which were mainly based on tests for columns with solid sections, were reviewed and compared with the test results of this study, for their possible applications to columns with hollow sections. After all, an empirical equation was proposed for concrete contribution to the initial shear strength of RC hollow columns based on fundamental mechanics and the test results.

  • While the conventional vehicle's Head-Units played relatively simple roles (e.g., control of heating ventilation and air conditioning, the radio reception), they have been evolving into vehicle-driver interface with the advent of the concept of Connected Car on top of a rapid development of ICT technology. The Head-Unit is now successfully extended as an IVI (In Vehicle Infotainment) that can operate various functions on multimedia, navigation, information with regards to vehicle's parts (e.g. air pressure, oil gauge, etc.). In this paper, we propose a platform architecture for IVI devices required to achieve the goal as a connected car. Connected car platform (CoCaP) consists of vehicle selective gateway (VSG) for receiving and controlling data from major components of a vehicle, application framework including native and web APIs required to request VSG functionality from outside, and service framework for driver assistance. CoCaP is implemented using Tizen IVI and Android on hardware platforms manufactured for IVI such as Nexcom's VTC1010 and Freescale's i.MX6q/dl, respectively. For more practical verification, CoCaP platform was applied to an real-world finished vehicle. And it was confirmed the vehicle's main components could be controlled using various devices. In addition, by deriving several services for driver assistance and developing them based on CoCaP, this platform is expected to be available in various ways in connected car and ITS environments.

  • In an attempt to disseminate modernized Korean traditional housing (Hanok), a ten-year research project was initiated in 2010 by the Korean Government to reduce the construction cost, improve the facility performance, and automate the Hanok construction industry. To meet these objectives, various research areas, including public policies, planning methods, design standards, new building materials, construction standards, maintenance procedures, advanced project management tools, and integrated IT applications have been developed. In addition, comprehensive technologies developed were applied to the ten pilot Hanok buildings to validate the real-world performance as part of the research project. To further facilitate the digital transformation of the Hanok industry by using the research results, it is required to disseminate the developed technologies in an automated and standardized manner. In particular, it is crucial to systematize and manage the interoperability of various technical data and accumulated historical data for different business functions, especially within the highly fragmented industry. In this context, this paper proposes an ontology-based Hanok information dissemination platform to enable industry-wide automated knowledge and information sharing. The system architecture, standardized historical database, and advanced analytics based on ontology web language (OWL) for the Hanok industrialization platform are introduced.
