It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.

When judging the ground by core-logging, depth of coring might be stopped by coming into view of the moderately weathered rock and also considered as bedrock line. However, highly weathered rock may appear again, if coring more, because there are core-stones in the residual soil and highly weathered rock by the effect of hydraulic-thermal differentiation and does the irregular rock weathering or metamorphic rock region. Therefore, there are room for misunderstanding of diagnosing the moderately weathered rock. Even though the irregular ground where the corestones were come out will show clear geotechnical differences between the ground and the gradually weathered bedrock, nowadays, the construction sites do not take into account the characteristic of core-stone region. In conclusion, to study the failure-strength characteristics of soil layers containing core-stones, we made artificial core-stones and varied percentage of corestones, and measured cohesion and friction factors to adjust them to construction sites containing corestones such as slope, tunnel, and underground.

Shallow landslide often occurs in areas of this topography where subsurface soil water flow paths give rise to excess pore-water pressures downslope. Recent hillslope hydrology studies have shown that subsurface topography has a strong impact in controlling the connectivity of saturated areas at the soil-bedrock interface. In this study, the physically based SHALSTAB model was used to evaluate the effects of three soil thicknesses (i.e. average soil layer, soil thickness to weathered soil and soil thickness to bedrock soil layer) and subsurface flow reflecting three soil thicknesses on shallow landslide prediction accuracy. Three digital elevation models (DEMs; i.e. ground surface, weathered surface and bedrock surface) and three soil thicknesses (average soil thickness, soil thickness to weathered rock and soil thickness to bedrock) at a small hillslope site in Jinbu, Kangwon Prefecture, eastern part of the Korean Peninsula, were considered. Each prediction result simulated with the SHALSTAB model was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for modelling accuracy. The results of the ROC analysis for shallow landslide prediction using the ground surface DEM (GSTO), the weathered surface DEM and the bedrock surface DEM (BSTO) indicated that the prediction accuracy was higher using flow accumulation by the BSTO and weathered soil thickness compared to results. These results imply that 1) the effect of subsurface flow by BSTO on shallow landslide prediction especially could be larger than the effects of topography by GSTO, and 2) the effect of weathered soil thickness could be larger than the effects of average soil thickness and bedrock soil thickness on shallow landslide prediction. Therefore, we suggest that using BSTO dem and weathered soil layer can improve the accuracy of shallow landslide prediction, which should contribute to more accurately predicting shallow landslides.

In general, geothermal energy pile and horizontal ground heat exchangers are installed in shallower depths than conventional vertical ground coupled heat pumps. Consequently their heat exchange performance is strongly governed by thermal conductivity of soil layer. Previous studies have shown that the thermal conductivity of soil above ground water table significantly affects the heat exchange rate because of partially saturated condition in soil and consequent variation of soil thermal conductivity. This paper presents a study result on the prediction of thermal conductivity of weathered granite soils. For weathered granite soils sampled from 5 locations, thermal conductivity tests were conducted with varying porosity and degree of saturation. The existing thermal conductivity models in literatures appeared inappropriate to the weathered granite soils. Hence, an empirical equation was proposed in this paper and its validity was examined by applying it to thermal conductivity test results obtained for weathered granite soils in this study and from literatures.

In this study, applicability of PMT in domestic area and test procedure were studied. At six test holes of three construction sites in Pusan, PMT using Elastometer-200 type was done. The problems during test were investigated and the test results were analysed. Limit pressure, p$\sub$ι/ could be determined by p- Δv/v method. Using PMT results, marine soil in Pusan could be classified approximately. Net limit pressure value was in the range of 6.4 ∼ 22.5 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in clay, 2.2 ∼ 30.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in sand, 13.0 ∼ 58.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in weathered soil and 47.0 ∼ 190.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in weathered rock. Also, E$\sub$m//p$\sub$ι/ value was in the range of 2.4 ∼ 7.0 in clay, 2.6 ∼ 12.1 in sand, 6.8 ∼ 17.1 in weathered soil and 7.2 ∼ 29.6 in weathered rock.

The general ground conditions in Korea are distributed in order of fill, deposit soil, weathered soil, weathered rock, soft rock. The fill soil and deposit soil located at the top have relatively low strength compared to the lower layer, and they are sometimes classified as soft ground according to the standard penetration test results. In this study, the PF method, a ground improvement method, was applied to the soft layer, a large plate load test was conducted on the improved ground, and the results were reviewed.
In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.

Passive force acting on the kicker block used to support a raker is different dependent on soil's type. The passive force incorporating a factor of safety is considered for design of the retaining wall. However, an actual passive force developing on the kicker block is overestimated and it may lead to an unsafe design. In this study, the actual passive forces acting on the kicker block in soil ground are evaluated using 3-D Finite Element Program, PLAXIS. Soft and weathered soils are selected as a soil ground. The relation curves between horizontal displacement and actual passive force of the kicker block for each soil ground are obtained through numerical analyses. From the curves, the actual passive forces are determined as a yielding point, which are about 55.5% and 66% of Rankine's passive forces in soft and weathered soils, respectively.
This study describes the effect of ground water table on the dynamic analysis of single piles subjected to earthquake loading. The dynamic numerical analysis was performed for different dry and saturated soils with varying the relative densities of surrounding weathered soils (SM). The test soil was a weathered soil encountered in the engineering field and bender element tests were conducted to estimate the dynamic properties of test soil. The Mohr-Coulomb model and Finn model were used for soil, dry and saturated conditions, respectively. These models validated with results of centrifuge tests. When compared with the results from the soil conditions, saturated cases showed more lateral displacement and bending moment of piles than dry cases, and this difference caused from the generation of excess porewater pressure. It means that the kinematic effect of the soil decreased as the excess pore water pressure was generated, and it was changed to the inertial behavior of the pile.

This paper presents results of a compressive investigation conducted on weathered soil stabilized with ground bottom ash (GBA) and red mud (RM). The effects of water/binder ratio, RM/GBA ratio, chemical activator (NaOH and $Na_2SiO_3$) and curing time on unconfined compressive strength of stabilized soils were examined. The results show that the water/binder ratio of 1.2 is optimum ratio at which the stabilized soils have the maximum compressive strength. For 28 days of curing, the compressive strength of soils stabilized with alkali-activated GBA and RM varies between 1.5 MPa and 4.1 MPa. The addition of GBA, RM and chemical activators enhanced strength development and the rate of strength improvement was more significant at the later age than at the early age. The potential environmental impacts of stabilized soils were also assessed. The chemical property changes of leachate from stabilized soils were analyzed in terms of pH and concentrations of hazardous elements. The observation revealed that the soil mixture with ground bottom ash and red mud proved environmentally safe.
