  • Shallow failures of slopes in weathered soils are caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. These failures are mainly triggered by the deepening of the wetting band accompanied by a decrease in suction induced by the water infiltration. In this paper, hysteresis on soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC) of granite and gneiss weathered soils are investigated using transient flow analysis respectively. Each case was subjected to artificial rainfall intensities and time duration depending on the laboratory-based drying and wetting processes. The results show that the unsaturated seepage on weathered slopes are very much affected by the initial suction of soils and unsaturated permeability of the soils. In addition, a granite weathered soil has a lower air-entry value, residual matric suction, and wetting front suction and less hysteresis loop than a gneiss weathered soil.

  • A weathered residual soil is a soil-like material derived from the in situ weathering and decomposition of rock which has not been transported from its original location. Undisturbed sampling of residual soils is extremely difficult, which has an important effect on investigating the strength and compression characteristics. Thus, a special undisturbed sampling device (direct shear box with shoe) was developed and undisturbed samples were successfully obtained for direct shear tests, Direct shear testing was conducted under unsoaked and soaked condition. As a result, the shear strength of soaked samples was less than that of unsoaked samples, and it was verified that direct shearing of undisturbed samples can evaluate reasonably the shear strength and the slope stability.

  • To evaluate the characteristics of permeability in weathered residual soil, flexible wall permeameter tests are performed using undisturbed samples. The Influence of hydraulic gradient and confining pressure on the permeability of weathered residual soil is analyzed. To compare the characteristics of permeability between weathered soil and sand, similar tests are performed using Jumoonjin sand. Also, piping model tests are performed to investigate the piping resistance of weathered residual soil. As a result, weathered residual soil shows very dependable permeability on hydraulic gradient and very large resisting ability against piping compared with sand.

  • The purpose of 1,his study is to analyze the compression and strength charactefistics of the decomposed -weathered soil originating from biotite gneiss or fine grained gneiss sampled from Poidong, Seoul : to figure out the behavioural characteristics of the decomposed -weathered soil in accordance with mineral composition and origin by comparing experimental results of residual soils. originating from granites and sampled from Bulam, Andong and Kimchun area. A series of CIU, CID CKoV, CKoD tests were car lied out. Although weathered soils have different origin and mineral composition, the slope of the NCL A was similar. It was also shown that plastic strain ratio was about 85% mainly due to the particle crushing effect during compression. The Poidong soil showed strain softening phenomenon unlike the Kimchun and Andong soils. this implies that the behavioural characteristics are affected by the origin and the mineral composition of the soil particles. Moreover, it was found that the angle of the shear resistance$(\phi')$ was dependent on the mineral composition. On the oher hand, measured Af values of decomposed weathered soils were more than one regardless of the origin and the mineral composition.

  • This study introduces the current theory of the SWCC and tries to verify the theory by performing laboratory tests for the local soils of Korea. First, the SWCCs of Poi-dong soil and Shinnae-dong soil, the most typical weathered residual soils in Korea, were experimentally obtained and the results were compared among others. Second, a SWCC model for deformable soils was proposed. For deformable soils, which show huge volume change during desaturation, the volume change behavior should be considered, and the SWCC should be expressed as a function of void ratio as well as suction.

  • This study was aimed to suggest reliable information of shear strength characteristics due to change of saturation in the landfills or slopes during rainfall infiltration. According to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, the characteristics of shear strength due to change of saturation were analyzed for the weathered residual soils which were sampled in the road construction site of Daejeon city. From the direct shear strength tests, the cohesions and the shear resistance angles were showed maximum values in the condition of optimum moisture content, and then decreased in the condition of wet side compaction. In this study, the cohesions were decreased more than 50% according to increasing saturation by infiltration for the compaction soils. But the reductions of the shear resistance angles were about $1{\sim}2^{\circ}$ which was small value, and thus the changes of the saturation were not nearly influenced the shear resistance angle. The influences of the saturation were seemed to very small for the residual strength parameters according to Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria.
