As a part of the construction of Korean Space Weather Prediction Center (K-SWPC), Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) installed a Scintillation Monitor (SCINTMON) and an All-Sky Camera to observe upper atmospheric/ionospheric phenomena. The SCINTMON is installed in KASI building in Daejeon in cooperation with Cornell university and is monitoring the ionospheric scintillations on GPS L-band signals. All-Sky Camera is installed at Mt. Bohyun in Youngcheon in cooperation with Korea Polar Research Institute. It is used to take the photograph for upper atmospheric layer through appropriate filters with specific airglow or auroral emission wavelengths and to observe upper atmospheric disturbance, propagation of gravity wave and aurora. The integrated data from the instruments including SCINTMON and All-Sky Camera will be used for giving nowcast on the space weather and making confidential forecast based on some space weather prediction models.
GEO-KOMPSAT-2 (GK2) program, which develops two advanced geostationary satellites simultaneously after the successful COMS mission (2010~present), is on going. An improved next generation meteorological payload and space weather sensors will be equipped on the GK2A. The space weather sensor will be the Korea's first geostationary space environment monitoring payload. Main objectives of the project are its applications into space weather forecasting and pre-warning of hazardous space weather by monitoring physical phenomena such as distribution of high energetic particles, Earth's magnetic fields and charging currents on the spacecraft at a geostationary orbit using the three space weather sensors(energetic particle detector, magnetometer and charging monitor). The summary of the GK2A space weather sensor development and its system and interface designs were described in the paper.

Many short range weather radars with the low elevation search capability are needed for analysis and prediction of unusual weather changes or rainfall phenomena which occurs regionally. However, due to the characteristics of low elevation electromagnetic wave beam, it is highly probable that the received weather signals of these radars are contaminated by the ground and sea clutter. Since most of ground clutter appears around the very narrow low Doppler frequency region, it is somewhat easy to separate. However, the sea clutter removal is very difficult since it can occupy the broad Doppler frequency region according to weather conditions. Therefore, in this paper, the sea clutter removal capability is analyzed for a phased array weather radar which use vertical array elements for electronic elevation beam steering. Also, it is shown that the sea clutter removal can be achieved appropriately using the receiver beam forming technology in a phased array antenna.

In order to minimize the casualties and damages from natural disasters, local terrain and weather phenomena need to be constantly monitored. Various weather monitoring systems are designed to collect and monitor the weather information for disaster prevention. Nowadays, wireless sensor networks have been widely used to transmit the weather information and collected by the base station at a regular interval. In this paper, disaster prevention monitoring system for efficient data transfer of weather information such as temperature, humidity and illumination are designed. Weather information is able to burst the data transmission based on storage of flash memory. Telosb sensor node are used in the research; programmed by nesC language used by TinyOS.

Presenting the impact of meteorological disasters departs from the traditional weather forecasting approach for meteorological phenomena. It is important to provide impact forecasts so that precautions against disruption and damage can be taken. Countries such as the United States, the U.K., and France already conduct impact forecasting for heavy rain, heavy snow, and cold weather. This study improves and applies forecasts of the impact of heavy rain among various weather phenomena in accordance with domestic conditions. A total of 33 impact factors for heavy rain were constructed per 1 km grids, and four impact levels (minimal, minor, significant, and severe) were calculated using standard normal distribution. Estimated criteria were used as indicators to estimate heavy rain risk impacts for 6 categories (residential, commercial, utility, community, agriculture, and transport) centered on people, facilities, and traffic.

Many short range weather radars with the low elevation search capability are needed for analysis and prediction of unusual weather changes or rainfall phenomena which occurs regionally. However, due to the characteristics of low elevation electromagnetic wave beam, it is highly probable that the received weather signals of these radars are seriously contaminated by the ground clutter. Therefore, the filter removing low Doppler frequency band is generally used to mitigate this problem. However, the phase noise in a radar system may limit the removal of the strong clutter and this may cause serious problems in estimating weather parameters because of the remaining clutter. Therefore, in this paper, the characteristics of phase noise in a radar system are investigated and the effects of the system phase noise are analyzed in the improvement of signal to clutter ratio for the strong clutter environment such as a short and low-elevated weather radar.
In this study, Yeongdong cold air damming (YCAD) cases that occur in winters have been selected using automatic weather station data of the Yeongdong region of Korea. The vertical and horizontal scales of YCAD were analyzed using rawinsonde and numerical weather model. YCAD occurred in two typical synoptic patterns such that low pressure and trough systems crossing and passing over Korea (low crossing type: LC and low passing type: LP). When the Siberian high does not expand enough to the Korean peninsula, low pressure and trough systems are likely to move over Korea. Eventually this could lead to surface temperature (3.1℃) higher during YCAD than the average in the winter season (1.6℃). The surface temperature during YCAD, however, was decrease by 1.3℃. The cold air layer was elevated around 120 m~450 m for LP-type. For LC-type, the cold layer were found at less than approximately 400 m and over 1,000 m, which could be thought of combined phenomena with synoptic and local weather forcing. The cross-sectional analysis results indicate the accumulation of cold air on the east mountain slope. Additionally, the north or northeasterly winds turned to the northwesterly wind near the coast in all cases. The horizontal wind turning point of LC-type was farther from the top of the mountain (52.2 km~71.5 km) than that of LP-type (20.0 km~43.0 km).
FPSOs are commonly proposed and used for offshore oil production. Due to the fundamental requirement of FPSOs to remain moored at their location, they are unable to avoid severe weather. FPSOs normally operate head to the weather, and sensitive equipment located near the bow will be susceptible to green water damage. Damage may occur to both equipment and superstructure, with resulting risk to personnel. To initially access green water is allowed by the physical understanding of green water events. In this paper the main focus is put on the physical phenomena of green water accounted for with the tested data in regular waves.
In cold season, the developed extratropical cyclones and associated cold fronts, and NW winter monsoon are encountered very frequently in the North Pacific, especially in the northwest part of it. The two sea areas, namely, the northwest part of North Pacific, especially the eastern area far off Japan east coast, and Burmuda Triangle in the North Atlantic are generally known as two of the most dangerous areas in the world because of high incidence of sea casualties. Even large ocean going vessels were sunk frequently due to strong winds and very high seas caused by NW monsoon or developed cyclones during the winter months. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the real state of heavy weather and high sea phenomena on the vesscls at sea, thus helping mariners operate in such conditions.

It has been known that Tri-origin theory could describe pertinently the dynamic phenomena of life. From the viewpoint of the asian image-mathematics, the most representative Tri-origin could be Four Images, Five Phases, and Six Qi(six kinds of weather). In Korean traditional medicine, Tri-origin could be meridian system, Jangbu viscera system, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system. Here we reasoned whether asian image-mathematics could be applicable to Korean traditional medicine system, and as a conclusion ; Meridian system belongs to Six Qi, Jangbu viscera system belongs to Five Phases, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system belongs to Four Images.
