Wear Behavior of Laser Modified SM45C Steel (레이저 표면개질된 SM45C강의 마멸거동)

  • Radiation of Nd-YAG laser changes and refines the surface microstructure of steels, which gives rise to enhancement of hardness and resulting wear resistance. In the present work, the effect of processing parameters during the surface modification with laser on the wear behavior of the SM45C steel was studied by means of wear testing. The counter material was alumina ceramics. The microstructure observation revealed the dependence of molten depth and width on the defocusing distance. The laser modification of steel surface give rise to improved wear resistance in the testing speed range of either <0.2 m/s or >0.9 m/s Material transfer from steel was wear observated the surface of counter material when testing speed was lower than 0.7 m/s.

  • In these days, wear resistance is an essential condition because the relative movement between machine parts is being accelerated and those connected with the drive parts transmit power and force. Also wear resistance is closely related to reliability and life of products, therefore the study on friction and wear is very important in many fields. In this paper, wear test was conducted to know properties about friction and wear of manganese phosphate being used widely. Test type is 1 ball on disk and we compared manganese phosphate thin film with non-coated material. Through this study, we could know the effect of this surface treatment method, and then it is assumed that the reliability of parts will be secure.

Wear Resistant Steel Plate for Heavy Duty Vehicle (건설 중장비에 적용가능한 내마모 강판)

  • To apply the wear resistant steel plate for heavy duty vehicle, the wear characterisms of various kinds of commercial steel plates were invesigated by dry sand/rubber wheel tester which was tested under scratch abrasion mode. The wear tested pnaterials were boron steels which were manufactured by thereto machanical control process (TMCP) in order to achieve higher hardness. As the result of the test, wear resistance of steel plate increases with the hardness and carbon content. The wear loss of wear resistance steel plate (Hv440) is a half times than tinat of SWS490A (Hv160) steel plate in dry sand-rubber wheel test and the result in field test is similar to this dry sand/rubber wheel test result. Therefore, dry sand/rubber wheel tester can be used to predict the scratch abrasion life of the parts for heavy duty vehicle.

Slurry Wear Test on the Liquid Jet (분류에 의한 SLURRY 마멸)

  • This research is about slurry wear of SM45C and SUS304, which using standard sand and KUM river sand. The results are as follows ; 1. Mass loss rates of both standard sand and KUM river sand were linearly increased as increasement of time and velocity. 2. The average diameter of sand from relatively, less wear rate and portion of larger particles. 3. Wear resistance was linear with time and velocity of liquid jet regardless of type of sand. Also, it was able to evaluate with the formula, $HV^2$/E calibrated with n, the velocity index. 4. The wear surface in liquid jet experiment was smooth. The maximum wear depth was observed at the location 2~4mm apart from the center in the condition of $90^{\circ}$ of collision angle 6mm of nozzle diameter, and 20mm of collision distance. The sectional shape in radial appeared as 'W'shape.

High Temperature Tribological Behaviors of Nitride Based Ceramic Coatings (나이트라이드계 세라믹 코팅의 고온 마모, 마찰거동)

  • In this study, CrN, TiN and TiN + CrN coatings have treated onto the steel substrates by ion plating to improve their tribological behaviors. Some of the specimens were ion nitriding treated to study the effect of ion nitriding on wear behavior. The wear tests were performed with these specimens by ball-onplate type and disc-on-plate type wear tester. It was demonstrated that ion nitriding treatment improve wear resistance of the coatings. The results of high temperature wear tests indicated that the specimens coated with CrN were exhibited the better wear resistance properties than the specimens with TiN coatings

  • The relationship between oxidation and sliding wear behavior of Fe-28 at%. Al alloys with B2 ordered structure has been investigated. Sliding wear tests of the alloys have been carried out under various environmental conditions using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The wear rate of the ordered alloys in an oxygen atmoshpere was found to be much lower than in an oxygen atmosphere showed that Fe2O oxides formed on the wearing surface. The oxide layer prevented direct contact of the two mating materials and therefore improved wear resistance of the Fe-Al intermetallic alloy. It was found that the surface Al2O3 oxide layer which provides good oxidation resistance and improved mechanical properties broke down easily and didnot function properly as an oxidation barrier.

A Study on the Complementary Alloying Design of Wear Resistant CV Graphite Cast Irons (내마모 CV흑연주철의 합금설계)

  • The effects of alloying elements on the structure and mechanical properties of compacted/vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin and molubdenum for producing pearlite matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The Brinell hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the specimens with the range of compositions, [1.5% Cu-0.05% Sn-(0.2-0.4)% Mo-(0.2-0.6)% P-(0.035-0.070)% B], was found to fall within in the following range, depending on their composition; Brinell hardness of BHN 250-315, ultimate tensile strength of $28.1-40.3kg/mm^2$. It was also found within this experiment that CV graphite cast irons possessing higher amount of phosphide eutectic exhibit better wear resistance, but the wear resistance became deteriorate when the area fraction of phosphide eutectics exceed more than 10%. From these experimental results, it could be concluded that the CV graphite cast iron containing 1.5% Cu, 0.05% Sn, 0.4% Mo, 0.2% P and 0.035% B showed good mechanical and wear resistance properties.

The development of a wear resistant hard-metal tappet in diesel engines

  • Diesel engines have many sliding parts with solid body contact. For example, a piston-ring and a cylinder bore, a valve and a valve-seat, a cam and a valve tappet. These parts have a severe wear problem. during engine life times. During these times, the valve tappet has abnormal wear such as scuffing and pitting due to a high hertzian contact stress between the cam and the tappet. Excessive wear problems frequently occur to both the cam and the tappet. To solve these problems, we developed an advanced wear resistant tappet. The developed tappet consisted of a hard-metal wear part and a steel body. To increase a bonding strength, those two parts, were directly bonded to each other. Also to decrease a bonding temperature, we developed the composition of Ni-binder materials in the hard metal. To estimate the wear characteristics of the newly developed tappet, we performed wear tests and engine dynamo tests in order to compare them with a conventional Fe-base tappet. As a result, the newly developed tappet has better wear characteristics than those of the conventional tappet. In addition, we performed a 100,000km field-test, and the newly developed tappet showed much improved wear resistance.

Wear Properties of the Alumina Short Fiber Reinforced Tin-Bronze Matrix Composites manufactured by Hot Pressing (가압소결법으로 제조된 알루미나 단섬유 보강 청동기지 복합재의 마모특성)

  • The wear properties of the alumina short fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by hot pressing was studied at the room temperature and $350^{\circ}C.$ The wear loss of various specimens having different constituent and different density was examined by a pin-on-disc type wear testing machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the worn surface morphology and the analysis of the composition on the worn surfaces. Since the reinforced effect of the alumina fiber on the wear resistance was dependent on the strength of alloy matrix, the pressureless sintered composites having a lower matrix strength showed a marked increase in wear resistance by the fiber reinforcement. As the wear condition became severe, the fiber reinforcement was more effective. The delamination on the wear surface was observed in the pressureless sintered specimens having pores which are related to the initiation and the propagation of cracks. However, the wear mechanism acting on a big failure area was not found on the wear surfaces of the hot pressed specimens having a few pores.
