  • In case of using Asymmetric Bipolar Pulsed DC (ABPD) power generator, thin film is efficiently deposited as ions are getting higher energy by suppressing target poisoning and electric arc. In this article, the mechanical properties of CNx thin films deposited on the STS 316L were compared with DC and ABPD power generators. The CNx thin films deposited with ABPD clearly improved wear resistance by higher ratio of sp3CN as compared with DC. Nb interlayer affected to increase the value of 10N of adhesion between CNx thin films and substrate. But, CNx thin films deposited with ABPD couldn't endure to wear load and decreased wear resistance as the films were too thinner than substrate. Nevertheless the higher substrate bias energy applied to perform the dense films, it wasn't shown benefits about the wear properties from DC sputtering. But, in case of using ABPD sputtering, the wear resistance was largely improved without changing morphology despite of thin films.

  • The flame quenching process has been employed to modify the surfaces of commercial marine propeller material, aluminum bronze alloy (Cu-8.8Al-5Ni-5Fe), and the microstructure, hardness and wear properties of the flame-quenched layers have been studied. The thermal history was accurately monitored during the process with respect to both the designed maximum surface temperature and holding time. The XRD and EDX analyses have shown that at temperatures above $T_{\beta}$, the microstructure consisting of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ phases changed into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite due to an eutectoid reaction of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}{\rightarrow}{\beta}$ and a martensitic transformation of ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\beta}^{\prime}$. The ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite phase formed showed a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure with the typical twinned structure. The hardness of the flame-quenched layer having the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ structure was similar to that of the ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ structure and depended sensitively on the size and distribution of hard ${\kappa}$ and ${\beta}^{\prime}$ phases with depth from the surface. As a result of the sliding wear test, the wear resistance of the flame-quenched layer was markedly enhanced with the formation of the ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite.

  • The microstructural and mechanical properties of Al-Si alloyed powder, prepared by gas atomization fallowed by hot extrusion, were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopies, hardness and wear testing. The gas atomized Al-Si alloy powder exhibited uniformly dispersed Si particles with particle size ranging from 5 to $8{\mu}m$. The hot extruded Al-Si alloy shows the average Si particle size of less than $1{\mu}m$. After heat-treatment, the average particle size was increased from 2 to $5{\mu}m$. Also, mechanical properties of extruded Al-Si alloy powder were analyzed before and after heat-treatment. As expected from the microstructural analysis, the heat-treated samples resulted in a decrease in the hardness and wear resistance due to Si particle growth. The friction coefficient of heat-treated Al-Si alloyed powder showed higher value tough all sliding speed. This behavior would be due to abrasive wear mechanism. As sliding speed increases, friction coefficient and depth and width of wear track increase. No significant changes occurred in the wear track shape with increased sliding speed.

  • To study the effect of TiC coating on weight change, microhardness, wear and heat - resistance of TiC layer, chemical vapour deposition on the various substrates has been carried out with the gaseous mixture of TiCl4, toluene, and H2 in the temperature range of 900 - 1000$^{\circ}C$. The results obtained are as follows ; (1) There is a limited value of carrier and reductant H2 gas flow rate, above which deteriorate effect on the TiC depoition arises (2) Increased thickness of TiC layer was resulted with increasing temperature and time. Better deposition was obtained with stainless steels and the best results were introduced by cobalt coating of substrates. (3) Wear resistance of the TiC coated specimen improved markedly. Heat resistivity of the coated steel showed excellent result, whereas the coated stainless Steels were infer-ior to the substrate.

  • When the low heavy oil is using as fuel oil to the diesel engine, some problems such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance are happened in diesel engine's internal material, especially the adhesive wear of piston ring groove was occurred as a important problem. Therefore to prevent adhesive wear of its groove, the surface of its groove used to be electroplated with Chrominum and for its Chromium electroplating, Fe anode is being used until nowadays because of its Special shape. However in case of using Fe anode, there were some problems such as deterioation of solution, property of Chromium film, and condition of coation. In this paper Pb anode electroplated withPb to the steel plate was investigated for its Chromium electroplating for Pb's high corrosion resistance in acid solution, and Pb anode is not dissolved compared with Fe anode and deterioration degree of solution in case of Pb anode is smaller than that of Fe anode and also property of Chromium film was better than that of Fe anode. Moreover it was known that the optimum cathodic current density for Pb electroplating to steel plate as insoluable anode for Chromium coating of piston ring groove is 30mA/$cm^2$ by experimental results obtained.

  • In this study, the effects of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) treatment at room and high temperatures (RT and HT of 400℃) on friction and wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. The objective of this study is to improve the mechanical properties and frictional behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by UNSM treatment. Dry friction and wear tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk method at RT with a bearing steel as the counter ball. Due to the high HT and UNSM treatment, the surface hardness tended to increase and surface roughness tended to reduce. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that nanocrystallization structure and compressive residual stress were formed at the surface layer after UNSM treatment at both RT and HT. After UNSM treatment, it was observed that the wear rate was reduced by about 6% for the specimen treated at RT and a 28% reduction for the specimen treated at HT in comparison with the untreated one. Based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that the damage caused by fatigue wear occurred in the wear track of the heat-treated specimen, and it is believed to be the cause of the highest wear rate. Mechanical properties and wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were improved and prospect of industrial application was confirmed. Further research is still required to improve the characteristics of SLM Ti-6Al-4V alloy to the level of wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

  • A series of investigations for Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings were carried out by using the specimens with various chemical compositions and heat treatment conditions. The rolling wear characteristics of alloyed austempered ductile irons under an unlubricated dry rolling condition was evaluated by the Amsler type test with 9.09% sliding ratio. Generally, the wear amount was increased with the austempering temperature and decreased when the hardness of the matrix was higher. The alloying elements also influenced the austempering reaction, the microstructure and the mechanical properties. In this study, the mechanical properties (i.e.) ultimate tensile strength (UTS), hardness, elongation) and the wear resistance are analysed to show the relationship between the alloying elements and the austempering temperatures. Mo, Cu and Ni are alloyed individually or in combination. It has been found that when Cu and Ni alloyed individually to a casting, the wear amount is increased than others with elements alloyed in combination. The amount of rolling wear loss was decreased when Mo was alloyed in cast iron, individually or in combination.

  • A new material was developed to achieve improvement of heat durability, improvement of wear resistance, stability of friction coefficient and reduction in aggression to counterpart, because it is difficult to maintain braking properties by using currently available materials in the train wagons used for high-speed transportation. As a result, the new material showed a stable wear resistance even in the speed range of 350km/h, where improvement was also confirmed in reduction of aggression to counterpart material by more than approximately 10%. This development was adopted for the brake lining in the Taiwan High Speed Rail project.

  • Surface hardening treatment is required to improve the wear-resistance of press die because severe abrasion of die occurs during the drawing process in which the forming of the automotive body is completed and during the trimming process in which the unnecessary parts are cut. In this study, experiments on the laser surface treatment of press die are performed. Specimens are heat-treated separately at certain plate and edge position by using a diode laser to carry out suitable surface hardening treatment to reduce the wear during the drawing and the trimming processes, and the proper conditions for heat treatment are found. Spheroidal and flake graphite cast iron specimens are used, and the heat treatment characteristics of the two materials are compared. From the results of the study, it is confirmed that the heat treatment characteristics differed depending on the materials.
