  • Weapon systems composed of several subsystems execute various engagement missions in distributed combat environments in cooperation with a large number of subordinate/adjacent weapon systems as well as higher echelons through tactical data links. Such distributed weapon systems require distributed real-time simulation test beds to integrate and test their operational software, analyze their performance and effects of cooperated engagement, and validate their requirement specifications. These demands present significant challenges in terms of real-time constraints, time synchronization, complexity and development cost of an engagement simulation test bed, thus necessitate the use of high-performance distributed real-time simulation architectures, and modeling and simulation techniques. In this paper, in order to meet these demands, we presented a distributed real-time simulation system based on High Level Architecture(HLA) and Discrete Event System Specification(DEVS). We validated its performance by using it as a test bed for developing the Engagement Control System(ECS) of a surface-to-air missile system. The proposed technique can be employed to design a prototype or model of engagement-level distributed real-time simulation systems.

  • It has been tested for SW reliability in order to prevent the SW error during the development of weapons systems. According to a recent report, defects such as memory leak, buffer overflow, and null deference occur usually in the development stage, but also in the mass production stage. Although it is intended to enhance the SW test and evaluation to prevent SW failures in the development stage, the non-functional problems like syntax errors are not completely revised due to the limitation of the schedule and costs. In addition, SW failure rate are usually fluctuated by the operational environment through SW upgrade in contrast with HW. In this paper, we propose a method to increase SW reliability in the mass production stage of Korean weapon systems.

  • Today's embedded software (SW) developments are mostly preceded by composing Software Requirement Specification (SRS). In particular, in the domain of weapon systems, it is essential to have a systematic method for the verification of the SW functionality. To be more specific, it is crucial to check if the SW functionality is implemented as described in SRS, so-called SW suitability verification. Unfortunately, existing static or dynamic SW testing methods are not sufficient to evaluate suitability with SRS since those testings only verify the robustness of the SW codes. In this paper, we propose an automatic embedded SW suitability verification framework which is based on a structured SRS. The major challenge in the automation of this verification framework is how to get rid of ambiguities in SRS. In order to overcome this challenge, we propose a structured SRS description framework and the supporting toolchain for that. We show how the proposed framework is applied to an actual SRS of a weapon system.

  • The purpose of this study and report is to provide, to the MND, an independent cost analysis of modernizing software of F-16 fighter fleets to support the use of several weapon system options, including JDAM, AIM-9X and HARM Targeting System etc. The study analyzed each options with software sizing, software cost, enabling hardware cost, flight test cost, system engineering cost, and 3 strategies. And the study proposed and analyzed some alternative strategies: strategy1 is to modernize software only within existing electronic processing capability; strategy2 is a full upgrade of weapons avionics with plug compatible electronics; strategy3 is an approach defined to mirror the USAF Common Configuration Implementation Approach (CCIP). The recommended alternative is strategy2.

  • Recently, various information technologies such as network communication and sensors have begun to be integrated into weapon systems that were previously operated in stand-alone. This helps the operators of the weapon system to make quick and accurate decisions, thereby allowing for effective operation of the weapon system. However, as the involvement of the cyber domain in weapon systems increases, it is expected that the potential for damage from cyber attacks will also increase. To develop a secure weapon system, it is necessary to implement built-in security, which helps considering security from the requirement stage of the software development process. The U.S. Department of Defense is implementing the Risk Management Framework Assessment and Authorization (RMF A&A) process, along with the introduction of the concept of cybersecurity, for the evaluation and acquisition of weapon systems. Similarly, South Korea is also continuously making efforts to implement the Korea Risk Management Framework (K-RMF). However, so far, there are no cases where K-RMF has been applied from the development stage, and most of the data and documents related to the U.S. RMF A&A are not disclosed for confidentiality reasons. In this study, we propose the method for inferring the composition of the K-RMF based on systematic threat analysis method and the publicly released documents and data related to RMF. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our inferring method by applying it to the naval battleship system.

  • In military weapon systems, control sticks for weapon operation are essential. This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a control stick for weapon systems using RS-422 communication and an embedded processor. This control stick is ergonomically designed, considering the hand dimensions of Korean pilots and mission convenience. The circuitry and software based on RS-422 communication were designed using an embedded processor. A prototype of the control stick was manufactured and subjected to a series of tests, including basic performance tests and various environmental tests such as altitude, high temperature, low temperature, temperature shock, humidity, rain, vibration shock, and acceleration, all of which met the required standards.

  • With the technology of our time growing sophisticated everyday, softwares advance rapidly in accordance. Reflecting this trend, researches on Usability of S/W GUI(Graphical User Interface) is actively taking place. However, despite the active researches on such topic, Usability study of S/W GUI for weapon system remains insufficient. For such reason, this paper intends to focus on drawing evaluation factors as well as priority of design factors for Usability of S/W GUI for weapon system. For an accurate and reliable result, Usability evaluation attributes & design factors were assessed by professionals. Moreover, by incorporating AHP(Analytical Hierarchy Process) and Matrix analysis, each evaluation attributes' level of importance and relation between design factors & usability attributes were assessed to draw final design priority. As a result, the importance of Informativity, Accessibility, and Visibility were derived as 0.127, 0.121, 0.108, and selected to be the foremost priority for evaluating. This research could be utilized as foundation for usability evaluation of S/W GUI on weapon system.

  • Maintainability is a major design parameter that includes availability as well as reliability in a RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability) analysis, and is an index that must be considered when developing a system. There is a lack of awareness of the importance of predicting and analyzing maintainability; therefore, it is dependent on past-experience data. To improve the utilization rate, maintainability must be managed as a key indicator to meet the user's requirements for failure maintenance time and to reduce life-cycle costs. To improve the maintainability-prediction accuracy in the detailed design stage, we present a maintainability-prediction method that applies Method B of the Military Standardization Handbook (MIL-HDBK-472) Procedure V, as well as a Korean maintainability-prediction software package that reflects the system complexity.
