  • The methodology of KOSPI forecast has been considered as one of the most difficult problem to develop accurately since short-term KOSPI is correlated with various factors including politics and economics. In this paper, we presents a methodology for forecasting short-term trends of stock price for five days using the feature selection method based on a neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM). The distributed non-overlap area measurement method selects the minimized number of input features by removing the worst input features one by one. A technical indicator are selected for preprocessing KOSPI data in the first step. In the second step, thirty-nine numbers of input features are produced by wavelet transforms. Twelve numbers of input features are selected as the minimized numbers of input features from thirty-nine numbers of input features using the non-overlap area distribution measurement method. The proposed method shows that sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy rates are 72.79%, 74.76%, and 73.84%, respectively.

  • Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have been used extensively in recent times to solve image classification and segmentation problems. However, the use of CNNs in image super-resolution problems remains largely unexploited. Filter interpolation and prediction model methods are the most commonly used algorithms in super-resolution algorithm implementations. The major limitation in the above named methods is that images become totally blurred and a lot of the edge information are lost. In this paper, we analyze super resolution based on CNN and the wavelet transform super resolution method. We compare and analyze the performance according to the number of layers and the training data of the CNN.

  • This paper proposes a neural network based approach for automatic human emotion recognition in textile images. To investigate the correlation between the emotion and the pattern, the survey is conducted on 20 peoples, which shows that a emotion is deeply affected by a pattern. Accordingly, a neural network based classifier is used for recognizing the pattern included in textiles. In our system, two schemes are used for describing the pattern; raw-pixel data extraction scheme using auto-regressive method (RDES) and wavelet transformed data extraction scheme (WTDES). To assess the validity of the proposed method, it was applied to recognize the human emotions in 100 textiles, and the results shows that using WTDES guarantees better performance than using RDES. The former produced the accuracy of 71%, while the latter produced the accuracy of 90%. Although there are some differences according to the data extraction scheme, the proposed method shows the accuracy of 80% on average. This result confirmed that our system has the potential to be applied for various application such as textile industry and e-business.

  • This paper presents a measure to classify healthy persons and Parkinson disease patients from the foot pressure of healthy persons and that of Parkinson disease patients using gait analysis based characteristics extraction and Neural Network with Weighted Fuzzy Membership Functions (NEWFM). To extract the inputs to be used in NEWFM, in the first step, the foot pressure data provided by the PhysioBank and changes in foot pressure over time were used to extract four characteristics respectively. In the second step, wavelet coefficients were extracted from the eight characteristics extracted from the previous stage using the wavelet transform (WT). In the final step, 40 inputs were extracted from the extracted wavelet coefficients using statistical methods including the frequency distribution of signals and the amount of variability in the frequency distribution. NEWFM showed high accuracy in the case of the characteristics obtained using differences between the left foot pressure and the right food pressure and in the case of the characteristics obtained using differences in changes in foot pressure over time when healthy persons and Parkinson disease patients were classified by extracting eight characteristics from foot pressure data. Based on these results, the fact that differences between the left and right foot pressures of Parkinson disease patients who show a characteristic of dragging their feet in gaits were relatively smaller than those of healthy persons could be identified through this experiment.

  • As the computing landscape is shifting to ubiquitous computing environments, there is increasingly growing the demand for a variety of device controls that react to user's implicit activities without excessively drawing user attentions. We developed an EMG-based car interface that enables the physically handicapped to drive a car using their functioning peripheral nerves. Our method extracts electromyogram signals caused by wrist movements from four places in the user's forearm and then infers the user's intent from the signals using multi-layered neural nets. By doing so, it makes it possible for the user to control the operation of car equipments and thus to drive the car. It also allows the user to enter inputs into the embedded computer through a user interface like an instrument LCD panel. We validated the effectiveness of our method through experimental use in a car built with the EMG-based interface.

  • Feature selection is the technique to improve the classification performance by using a minimal set by removing features that are not related with each other and characterized by redundancy. This study proposed new feature selection using the distance between the center of gravity of the bounded sum of weighted fuzzy membership functions (BSWFMs) provided by the neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM) in order to improve the classification performance. The distance-based feature selection selects the minimum features by removing the worst features with the shortest distance between the center of gravity of BSWFMs from the 24 initial features one by one, and then 22 minimum features are selected with the highest performance result. The proposed methodology shows that sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy are 97.7%, 99.7%, and 98.7% with 22 minimum features, respectively.

  • This paper presents a methodology to forecast KOSPI index by extracting fuzzy rules based on the neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM) and the minimized number of input features using the distributed non-overlap area measurement method. NEWFM classifies upward and downward cases of KOSPI using the recent 32 days of CPPn,m (Current Price Position of day n for n-1 to n-m days) of KOSPI. The five most important input features among CPPn,m and 38 wavelet transformed coefficients produced by the recent 32 days of CPPn,m are selected by the non-overlap area distribution measurement method. For the data sets, from 1991 to 1998, the proposed method shows that the average of forecast rate is 67.62%.

  • In this paper, Using an automatic tracking system, behavior of an aquatic insect, Chironomus sp. (Chironomidae), was observed in semi-natural conditions in response to sub-lethal treament of a carbamate insecticide, carbofuran. The fourth instar larvae were placed in an observation cage $(6cm\times{7cm}\times{2.5cm)}$ at temperature of $18^\circ{C}$ and the light condition of 10 time (light) : 14 time (dark). The tracking system was devised to detect the instant, partial movement of the insect body. Individual movement was traced after the treatment of carbofuran (0.1ppm) for four days 2days : before treatment, 2 days : after treatment). Along with the other irregular behaviors, "ventilation activity", appearing as a shape of "compressed zig-zag", was more frequently observed after the treatment of the insecticide. The activity of the test individuals was also generally depressed after the chemical treatment. In order to detect behavioral changes of the treated specimens, wavelet analysis was implemented to characterize different movement patterns. The extracted parameters based on Discrete Wavelet Transforms (DWT) were subsequently provided to artificial neural networks to be trained to represent different patterns of the movement tracks before and after treatments of the insecticide. This combined model of wavelets and artificial neural networks was able to point out the occurrence of characteristic movement patterns, and could be an alternative tool for automatically detecting presences of toxic chemicals for water quality monitoring. quality monitoring.

  • Research on how to use the biological characteristics of human to confirm the identity of the individual is being actively conducted. Electrocardiogram(: ECG) based biometric system is difficult to counterfeit and does not cause skin irritation on the subject. It can be easily combined with conventional biometrics such as fingerprint and face recognition to give multimodal biometric systems. In this thesis, biometric identification method analysing ECG waveform characteristics from Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) coefficients is suggested. Feature selection is performed on the 9 coefficients of DWT using the correlation analysis. The verification is achieved by using the error back propagation neural networks. Using the proposed approach on 24 subjects of MIT-BIH QT Database, 98.88% verification rate has been obtained.

  • This paper presents a methodology to 1-day-forecast stock index using the automatic feature extraction method based on the neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM). The distributed non-overlap area measurement method selects the minimized number of input features by automatically removing the worst input features one by one. CPP$_{n,m}$(Current Price Position of the day n: a percentage of the difference between the price of the day n and the moving average from the day n-1 to the day n-m) and the 2 wavelet transformed coefficients from the recent 32 days of CPP$_{n,m}$ are selected as minimized features using bounded sum of weighted fuzzy membership functions (BSWFMs). For the data sets, from 1989 to 1998, the proposed method shows that the forecast rate is 60.93%.
