Wavelet based Embedded Video Coding with 3-D Block Partition (3-D 블록분할을 이용하는 웨이브렛 기반 임베디드 비디오 부호화)

  • In this paper, we propose a low bit-rate embedded video coding scheme with 3-D block partition in the wavelet domain. The proposed video coding scheme includes multi-level three dimensional dyadic wavelet decomposition, raster scanning within each subband, partitioning of blocks, and adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. Although the proposed video coding scheme is quite simple, it produces bit-streams with good features, including SNR scalability from the embedded nature. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed video coding scheme is quite competitive to other good wavelet-based video coders in the literature.

  • In the decoding process of interframe wavelet coding, the inverse wavelet transform requires huge computational complexity. However, the decoder may need to be used in various devices such as PDAs, notebooks, PCs or set-top Boxes. Therefore, the decoder's complexity should be adapted to the processor's computational power. A decoder designed in accordance with the processor's computational power would provide optimal services for such devices. So, it is natural that the complexity scalability and the low complexity codec are also listed in the requirements for scalable video coding. In this contribution, we develop a method of controlling and lowering the complexity of the spatial wavelet transform while sustaining almost the same coding efficiency as the conventional spatial wavelet transform. In addition, the proposed method may alleviate the ringing effect for certain video data.

However, as video technology starts to pervade all aspects of our lives, decoders are becoming required in various devices such as PDAs, notebooks, PCs, and set-top boxes. Therefore, a decoder's complexity needs to be adapted to the processor's computational power, and consequently a low-complexity codec is also required for scalable video coding.   • Video compression based on DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) has weakpoints of blocking artifacts and pixel loss when the resolution is changed. DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) based method can overcome such problems. In SAMCoW (Scalable Adaptive Motion Compensation Wavelet), one of wavelet based video coding algorithm, both intra frames and motion compensated error frames are encoded using EZW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) algorithm. However the property of wavelets transform coefficients of motion compensated error frames are different from that of still images. Signal energy is not highly concentrated in the lower bands which is true for most still image cases. Signal energy is rather evenly distributed over all frequency bands. This paper suggests a new video coding algorithm utilizing these properties. Spatial band coding which is known to be very effective for encoding images with relative1y high frequency components and not utilizing the interband coefficients correlation is applied instead of EZW to encode both intra and inter frames. In spatial band coding, the position and value of significant wavelet coefficients in each band are progressively transmitted. Unlike EZW, inter band coefficients correlations are not utilized in spatial band coding. It has been shown that spatial band coding gives better performance than EZW when applied to wavelet based video compression.

  • In this paper, we propose a new wavelet-based fuzzy modeling using a DNA coding method. Generally, it is well known that the DNA coding method is more diverse in the knowledge expression and better in the optimization performance than the genetic algorithm (GA) because it can encode more plentiful genetic informations based on the biological DNA. The proposed method can construct a fuzzy model using the wavelet transform, in which the coefficients are identified by the DNA coding method. Thus, we can effectively get the fuzzy model of the nonlinear system by using the advantages of both wavelet transform and DNA coding method. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, it is compared with modeling method using the conventional GA.

  • Recently efficient image coding using zerotree have been proposed. In these methods, the locations of nonzero wavelet coefficient are encoded with a tree structure, called zerotree, which can exploit the self-similarity of the wavelet pyramid decomposition across different scales. These are very especially in low bit rate image coding. In this paper, two zerotree image coding algorithm, EZW and SPHIT are briefly introduced, and a new zerotree searching scheme is proposed to emphasize the significance of a wavelet coefficient by its orientation as well as its scale.

3D Volumetric Medical Image Coding Using Unbalanced Tree (3차원 불균형 트리 구조를 가진 의료 영상 압축에 대한 연구)

  • This paper focuses on lossy medical image compression methods for medical images that operate on three-dimensional(3-D) irreversible integer wavelet transform. We offer an application of unbalanced tree structure algorithm to medical images, using a 3-D unbalanced wavelet decomposition and a 3-D unbalanced spatial dependence tree. The wavelet decomposition is accomplished with integer wavelet filters implemented with the lifting method. We have tested our encoder on volumetric medical images using different integer filters and coding unit sizes. The coding unit sizes of 16 slices save considerable dynamic memory(RAM) and coding delay from full sequence coding units used in previous works. If we allow the formation of trees of different lengths, then we can accomodate more transaxial scales than three. The encoder and decoder can then keep track of the length of the tree in which each pixel resides through the sequence of decompositions. Results show that, even with these small coding units, our algorithm with certain filters performs as well and better in lossy coding than previous coding systems using 3-D integer unbalanced wavelet transforms on volumetric medical images.

An Image Coding Method by Using the Bit-Level Information of Wavelet Coefficients (웨이블릿 계수의 비트 레벨 정보를 사용한 영상 부호화 기법)

  • In this paper, the wavelet image coder, that can encode the bit-level information of wavelet coefficients, is proposed. The proposed coder is used the modified EZW algorithm and significant coefficient array that has bit level information of the wavelet coefficients to reduce the memory requirement in coding process. The significant coefficient array is two dimensional data structure that has bit level information of the wavelet coefficients. The proposed algorithm performs the coding of the significance coefficients and coding of bit level information of wavelet coefficients at a time by using the significant coefficient array. Experimental results show a better or similar performance of the proposed method when compared with conventional embedded wavelet coding algorithm. Especially, the proposed algorithm performs stably without image distortion at various bit rates with minimum memory usage by using the significant coefficient array.

Improved Performance of Very Low Bit-rate Video Coding Using Wavelet Packet Transform

  • This paper proposes the use of wavelet packet transform in a transform based video coding scheme, which is mainly used in low/very low bit-rate video coding schemes i.e. H.263 standard. In the experiments, the discrete cosine transform in the video coding scheme is replaced by the wavelet packet transform, and the improved performance in term of peak signal to noise ratio is measured and compared with the results obtained from the coding scheme implementing the ordinary wavelet transform. The experimental results show an impressive improvement obtained from the use of wavelet packet transform.

  • EZW(Embedded coding using Zero-trees of Wavelet coefficients) decreases symbol-position information using zero-trees, but threshold value fall lot raising resolution, then coding cost of significant coefficients is expensive. To avoide this fact, this paper uses quad-tree representing coefficient-position information. a magnitude of significant coefficient is represented on matrix used at EZW. the proposed algorithm is hoped for raising a coding cost.
