A Frequency Tunable Double Band-Stop Resonator with Voltage Control by Varactor Diodes

  • In this paper, a frequency tunable double band-stop resonator (BSR) with voltage control by varactor diodes is suggested. It makes use of a half-wavelength shunt stub as its conventional basic structure, which is replaced by the distributed LC block. Taking advantage of the nonlinear relationship between the frequency and electrical length of the distributed LC block, a dual-band device can be designed easily. With two varactor diodes, the stop-band of the resonator can be easily tuned by controlling the electrical length of the resonator structure. The measurement results show the tuning ranges of the two operating frequencies to be 1.82 GHz to 2.03 GHz and 2.81 GHz to 3.03 GHz, respectively. The entire size of the resonator is $10mm{\times}11mm$, which is very compact.

  • We present the fabrication and performance of wavelength tunable butt coupled (BT) sampled-grating (SG) distributed bragg reflector (DBR) - planar buried heterostructure (PBH) laser diodes (LD). The fabricated LD showed the high optical output power due to the high coupling efficiency between active and passive components by the BT coupling methods. The series resistance and diode ideality factor of LD were measured to be 3.7 $\Omega$ and 1.35, respectively. The average threshold current was 25 ㎃. The output powers of BT-SG DBR-PBH-LD were obtained to be as high as 12.3 and 24.56 ㎽ at 100 and 200 ㎃, respectively. The maximum wavelength tuning range was about 31 nm and the side mode suppression ratio was about 37 dB.

  • A wavelength filter based on a polymer Bragg reflector has received much attention due to its simple structure and wide tuning range. Tilted Bragg gratings and asymmetric Y-branches are integrated to extract the reflected optical signals in different directions. To optimize device performance, design procedures are thoroughly considered and various design parameters are applied to fabricated devices. An asymmetric Y-branch with an angle of $0.3^{\circ}$ produced crosstalk less than -25 dB, and the even-odd mode coupling was optimized for a grating tilt angle of $2.5^{\circ}$, which closely followed the design results. Through this experiment, it was confirmed that this device has a large manufacturing tolerance, which is important for mass production of this optical device.

  • We report a new molecular detection process which measures the changes in the plasmon resonance peaks of periodic Au nanoparticle arrays fabricated using the electron beam lithography. As the Au nanoparticle arrays are modified by the chemical reaction in solutions having various concentrations of a target molecule, both the position and intensity of the plasmon peak change in proportion to the concentration of the target molecule. We expect that the process developed in this work can be employed for fine tuning of the plasmon peak wavelength and also for the optical detection of various kinds of molecules. Moreover, this method may improve the measurement accuracy compared with existing approaches that use only one change (peak wavelength or peak intensity) as a readout value for the molecular detection.

Absolute Distance Measurements Using the Optical Comb of a Femtosecond Pulse Laser

  • We describe a new way of implementing absolute displacement measurements by exploiting the optical comb of a femtosecond pulse laser as a wavelength ruler, The optical comb is stabilized by locking both the repetition rate and the carrier offset frequency to an Rb clock of frequency standard. Multiwavelength interferometry is then performed using the quasi-monochromatic beams of well-defined generated wavelengths by tuning an external cavity laser diode consecutively to preselected light modes of the optical comb. This scheme of wavelength synthesizing allows the measurement of absolute distances with a high precision that is traceable to the definition of time. The achievable wavelength uncertainty is $1.9{\times}10^{-10}$, which allows the absolute heights of gauge blocks to be determined with an overall calibration uncertainty of 15 nm (k = 1). These results demonstrate a successful industrial application of an optical frequency synthesis employing a femtosecond laser, a technique that offers many possibilities for performing precision length metrology that is traceable to the well-defined international definition of time.

  • A polarized mode convertible, wavelength tunable optical filters with acoustic barriers and acousto-optic effect have been produced in LiNb03 substrate utilizing the Ti double diffusion technique. Polarization conversion in excess of 81 % and a spectral width of -200 kHz (-1.83 nm) were achieved at a wavelength of 1551.6 nm and RF frequencies of 173.07 kHz and 173.05 kHz for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (lM) input polarizations, respectively. The electrical driving power was 10.97 mW and reduced to about 10% of one for an optical filter without an acoustic barrier. A linear tuning rate of 8.2 nmlMHz and sidelobe intensity of -4 dB was demonstrated. rated.

  • We design and fabricate a novel tunable wavelength filter, which utilizes long-range surface plasmon-polaritons excited along nm-thick-metal strips. A gold metal strip, with $\sim$ cm length, 20 nm thickness, and $\sim$ 5$\mu$m width, is embedded in thick thermo-optic Polymer films supported by a silicon wafer. A dielectric Bragg grating structure is Placed on the metal strip, so that transmission signals at telecom wavelength are selected by thermal effect of the thermo-optic polymer. High extinction ratio of 25 dB and total insertion loss of $\sim$25 dB/cm can be measured by single-mode coupling of optical fibers. We also verify that wavelength tuning of the long-range surface plasmon-polariton filters can be achieved by electric current directly applied to the metal-strip waveguides.

  • Polarization-independent $Ti:LiNbO_3\;2{\times}2$ optical add/drop multiplexer for the 1550nm wavelength region is fabricated. The device consists of two input waveguides, two polarization beam splitters. two polarization conversion/electrooptic tuning waveguide sections, and two output waveguides. The single mode channel waveguides for both TE and TM polarizations are fabricated on a x-cut $Ti:LiNbO_3$substrate by Ti diffusion. Spectral section is based on phase-matched polarization conversion due to shear strain induced by a thick $SiO_2$ grating overlay film. An applied voltage tunes the device by changing the waveguide birefringence, hence the optical wavelength at which most efficient polarization conversion occurs. Tuning rate of 0.094nm/V with a maximum range of 17nm has been obtained. The nearest side-lobe is about 8.2dB. The FWHM is 3.72nm.
