  • In this paper, we consider the problem of packet transmission in a wavelength division multiplexed(WDM) optical network. Our network model assumes that receivers are fixed-tuned and transmitters are tunable such that optical lasers assigned to transmitters have limited access to the network bandwidth: hence each node must be equipped with multiple optical lasers and/or multiple optical filters in order to maintain a single-hop network. We first analyze scheduling all-to-all packet transmissions and present optimum scheduling for all-to-all packet transmissions. We then extend the analysis to the case of arbitrary traffic demands. We show that the scheduling with arbitrary traffic demand is NP-hard. A heuristic algorithm based on list scheduling is presented. The upper bound so obtained is compared with the lower bound and provides performance guarantees with arbitrary demands. The result are applicable to arbitrary tuning delay, arbitrary number of wavelength channels and optical lasers of arbitrary tuning ranges.

  • In this paper, a low-cost hybrid-integrated tunable laser is realized using a polymer-ring resonator-based add/drop filter reflector and a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The add/drop filter reflector, composed of a double-ring resonator with different radii, can have characteristics of selective wavelength reflection and wide wavelength tuning with an aid of vernier effect derived from the radii difference. By hybrid-integrating the reflective semiconductor optical amplifier with the add/drop filter reflector, a tunable laser can be realized through an active alignment method. The hybrid laser exhibited a single mode lasing with side mode suppression ratio of 26 dB and full width half maximum of 0.03 nm. In addition, applying a low current as small as 25 mA onto electrodes over add/drop filter reflector, a wavelength tuning range of 17 nm could be obtained.

  • This study reports a portable and precision photonic biosensor reader that can measure the concentration of a particular antigen using an optical resonant reflection biosensor (ORRB). To create a compact biosensor reader, a compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a compact built-in wavelength meter were manufactured. The wavelength stability and accuracy of the compact built-in wavelength meter were measured to be less than 0.02 nm and 0.06 nm, respectively. The tunable VCSEL emission wavelength was measured with the compact built-in wavelength meter, it has a fast sweep time (~ 10 seconds) and a wide tuning range (> 4 nm) that are sufficient for biosensor applications based on ORRB. The reflection spectrum of a plastic based ORRB chip was measured by the fabricated portable photonic biosensor reader using the VCSEL and wavelength meter. Although the reader is the size of a palmtop device, it could make a precise measurement of the peak wavelength on equal terms with a conventional bulky optical spectrometer.

  • Acousto-optical wavelength tunable optical filters in LiNbO$_3$ have been demonstrated using taperd directional weighted coupling acoustic waveguides and Ti double diffusion technique. Conversion efficiency in excess of 61%, 86% and sidelobe intensity of -14.29㏈, -14.99㏈ were measured at a wavelength of 1551.1nm RF frequency of 173.58MHz and RF power of 35㎽ for both TE and TM input polarizations, respectivelv. A spectral width of ~l.8nm and linear tuning late of 8.6nm/MHz were demonstrated. A 2.82$mutextrm{s}$ switching time has been measured. With two channels with 2.5nmseparation, channel cross-talk was lower than -l4㏈ for single wavelength filtering due to sidelobe.

  • Polymeric optical waveguide devices with Bragg gratings have been investigated, for implementing tunable lasers and wavelength filters used in wavelength-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. Owing to the excellent thermo-optic effect of these polymers, wavelength tuning is possible over a wide range, which is difficult to achieve using other optical materials. In this study the phase-mask technology, which has advantages over the conventional interferometeric method, was introduced to facilitate the fabrication of Bragg gratings in polymeric optical waveguide devices. An optical setup capable of fabricating multiple Bragg gratings simultaneously on a 4-inch silicon wafer was constructed, using a 442-nm laser and phase mask. During fabrication, some of the diffracted light in the phase mask was totally reflected inside the mask, which affected the quality of the Bragg grating adversely, so experiments were conducted to solve this issue. To verify grating uniformity, two types of wavelength-filtering devices were fabricated using the phase-mask lithography, and their reflection and transmission spectra were measured. From the results, we confirmed that the phase-mask method provides good uniformity, and may be applied for mass production of polymer Bragg-grating waveguide devices.

  • In this paper, highly-efficient optical gating in a junction device based on vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) thin film grown by a sol-gel method was investigated as a gate terminal of a three-terminal device using infrared light with a wavelength of ~1554.6 nm. Due to the photoinduced phase transition, the threshold voltage of the $VO_2$ junction device, at which the device current abruptly jumps, could be tuned with a sensitivity of ~96.5 V/W by adjusting the optical power of the infrared light directly illuminating the device. Compared with the tuning efficiency of the previous device fabricated using $VO_2$ thin film deposited by a pulsed laser deposition method, the threshold voltage of this device could be tuned by ~76.8 % at an illumination power of ~39.8 mW resulting in a tuning efficiency of ~1.930 %/mW, which is ~4.9 times larger than the previous device.

  • Implementation of a wavelength-swept source with constant tuning rate adopting a PZT-type tunable filter, requires the knowledge of hysteresis of the filter used. The hysteresis must be considered to avoid any degradation in resolution of the optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) system. An optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) could be used to do the hysteresis measurement, but its measurement time is too long for the high-speed driving conditions for the filter. We proposed a new hysteresis measurement method based on OFDR, which could measure the hysteresis in a real driving condition. A hysteresis measurement apparatus consisted of wavelength-swept source, interferometer, signal processing unit, and PC program is built and used to do the measurement. It is concluded that the new method is useful in the measurement of hysteresis at real driving conditions by successfully implementing a swept-wavelength source whose wavelength change is linear in time.

  • We have demonstrated a fiber short-wavelength filter with a good cut-off property using dissimilar dispersive properties between? a thermally expanded cored fiber and an external medium. Side-polishing is applied to coupling between the fiber and the external medium. The experimental results revealed that the bend edge wavelength can be adjusted by controlling the degree of core expansion. Futhermore, the sharpness of wavelength response? was significantly? improved by employing expanded core fiber instead of a conventional single mode fiber. Tuning range of the band edge wavelength exceeded 400 m based on thermo-optic effect of the external medium.

  • In optical passive star interconnections, all packets are transmitted between nodes ina broadcast and-select manner. It is assumed that each node has a innable transmitter and a fixed-savelength receiver, ad that all packet lengths are equal so that each transmission can be done in a unit time. The tuning delay, denoted by $\delta$, means the amount of time for transmitter to change its wavelength to another one. The problec is , given ay value of the mumber of nodes N and the number of wavelengths $\kappa$ according to WDM implementations, to find transmission schedules with minimum cycle length for all-to all brondcaxt where no one sends any packet to itself. In this paper, we prove that the cycle length of optimal transcission schedules should be at least $max[[{\frac{N}{k}](N-1)}]$,$k\delta$$+N-1$. A novel algorithm for optimal transmission schedules is then presented when N-1 is divisible by $\kappa$. This algorithm also can be used for any values of N and $\kappa$ if the tuning delay $\delta$ does not affect strictly the cycle length of transmission schedules, i,e, $[\frac{N}{k}](N-1)$ > $\kappa\delta$+N-1.
