Microfluidic chips are new devices that can manipulate liquids at the micrometer level, and terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy has good applicability in biochemical detection. The combination of these two technologies can shorten the distance between sample and THz wave, reduce THz wave absorption by water, and more effectively analyze the kinetics of biochemical reactions in aqueous solutions. This study investigates the effects of different external magnetic field intensities on the THz transmission characteristics of deionized water, CuSO4, CuCl2, (CH3COO)2Cu, Na2SO4, NaCl, and CH3COONa; the THz spectral intensity of the sample solutions decrease with increasing intensity of the applied magnetic field. Analysis shows that the magnetic field leads to a change in the dipole moment of water molecules in water and electrolyte solutions, which enhances not only the hydrogen-bond networking ability of water but also the hydration around ions in electrolyte solutions, increasing the number of hydrogen bonds. Increasing the intensity of this magnetic field further promotes the hydrogen-bond association between water molecules, weakening the THz transmission intensity of the solution.
The bit walk-off effect caused by fiber dispersion and carrier reuse in the base station (BS) are two key problems in radio-over-fiber (ROF) systems. In this paper, a novel frequency-octupling ROF system based on the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is proposed, which can overcome the bit walk-off effect and realize carrier reuse by inserting pilot signals. Theoretical analysis and simulation verification of the system are carried out. Under the condition of a Q factor greater than 6, the optical fiber transmission distance of the upper and lower links is more than 290 km and 80 km, respectively. The influence of the main device parameters of the system on the Q factor is analyzed when they deviate from their designed values. The system designed in this paper can not only effectively overcome the bit walk-off effect, but also solve the problem of downlink performance degradation and the limitation of tunability caused by conventional carrier reuse in ROF. The system can greatly increase the transmission distance and improve the performance of the system and has an important application prospect in ROF.
A reflecting telescope consists of a concave primary mirror and a convex secondary mirror. The primary mirror is easy to measure, because it converges the beam from an interferometer, while the secondary mirror diverges the beam and so is not easy to measure, even though it is smaller than the primary mirror. In addition, the Korsch-type telescope uses the central area of the secondary mirror, so that the entire area of the secondary mirror needs to be measured, which the classical Hindle test cannot do. In this paper, we propose a double-stitching method that combines two separate area measurements: the annular area, measured using the Hindle stitching method, and the central area, measured using a spherical wave from the interferometer. We test the surface error of a convex asphere that is 202 mm in diameter, with 499 mm for its radius of curvature and -4.613 for its conic constant. The surface error is calculated to be 19.5±1.3 nm rms, which is only 0.7 nm rms different from the commercial stitching interferometer, ASI. Also, the two results show a similar 45° astigmatism aberration. Therefore, our proposed method is found to be valuable for testing the whole area of a convex asphere.
Wave-front error(WFE) is the main parameter that determines the optical performance of the opto-mechanical system. In the development of opto-mechanics, WFE due to the main loading conditions are set to the important specifications. The deformation of the optical surface can be exactly calculated thanks to the evolution of numerical methods such as the finite element method(FEM). To calculate WFE from the deformation results of FEM, another approximation of the optical surface deformation is required. It needs to construct additional grid or element mesh. To construct additional mesh is troublesomeand leads to transformation error. In this work, the moving least-squares approximation is used to reconstruct wave front error It has the advantage of accurate approximation with only nodal data. There is no need to construct additional mesh for approximation. The proposed method is applied to the examples of GOCI scan mirror in various loading conditions. The validity is demonstrated through examples.
The coupling between copper wire and a THz electromagnetic wave is one of the important factors to build up the magnitude and spectrum of a THz wave. We measured a I THz spectrum range THz pulse into a $480{\mu}m$ diameter and 23cm long copper wire waveguide. We measured THz pulses up to $275{\mu}m$ air gap between the end of the copper wire and transmitter or receiver chips. The coupling sensitivity of the transmitter is 3 times bigger than that of the receiver. The THz pulses propagated to air by the end of the receiver-side copper wire tip acting as a transmitter antenna. We confirmed that the THz field concentrates near the copper wire surface by opening the pin hole to the copper wire waveguide.
In the case of an imaging system affected by aberrations which are not precisely known, the effect of aberrations can be minimized and near-diffraction-limited images can be restored by introducing artificial random phase fluctuations in the exit pupil of the imaging system and using bispectral speckle imaging. In order to determine the optimum value of the correlation length for Gaussian random phase model, computer simulation is performed for 50 image frames of a point object in the presence of defocus, spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism of 1 wave, respectively. In terms of the criterion of performance, the FWHM of the point spread function, normalized peak intensity, MTF and visual inspection of the restored object are employed. The optimum value for the rms difference $\sigma$ of aberration on the exit pupil in the interval of Fried parameter ${\Upsilon}_0$ is given by 0.27-0.53 wave for spherical aberration, and 0.24-0.36 wave for defocus and astigmatism, respectively. It is found that the bispectral speckle imaging technique does not give good results in the case of coma.
Design of the optical modulator composed of a three-waveguide coupler and CPW traveling-wave electrodes was carried out. Switching phenomena of three-waveguide couplers were analyzed by using the coupled mode theory, and the coupling-lengths of the devices were calculated by means of the FDM. CPW traveling-wave electrodes were analysed by the CMM and SOR simulation technique in order to find the conditions of phase-velocity and impedance matching. Traveling-wave modulators were fabricated on z-cut LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Ti was in-diffused in LiNbO$_3$ to make waveguides and Au electrodes were built on the waveguides by the electrolyte technique. The fabricated modulator chip was end-polished, pig-tailed and packaged in a brass mount with K-connector. The insertion loss and the switching voltage of the optical modulator were about 4㏈ and 19V, respectively. Network analyzer was used to obtain the S parameter and the corresponding RF response. From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted to be Z$_{c}$= 45 Ω, N$_{eff}$=2.20, and $\alpha$$_{0}$=0.055/cm√GHZ. The measured optical response R($\omega$) was compared with the theoretically estimated one, showing both responses agree well. The measurement results revealed that 3㏈ bandwidth turned out to be about 13 GHz.
Using an ellipsometer with dual rotating quarter-wave plates, we have analyzed the relationship between Fourier coefficients and Mueller matrices in the cases of an error-free optical system and of five systematic errors (alignment errors and retardation errors in the quarter-wave plates, and alignment error in the analyzer). In the case with five systematic errors, simulation results show that retardation errors cause more error in the diagonal elements of the Mueller matrix than do alignment errors. We have found that errors in the Mueller matrix caused by initial misalignment of the dual quarter-wave plates were the same. We have chosen the rotation rates of two quarter-wave plates such that the rotational frequencies ${\omega}_1$ and ${\omega}_2$ differ by a factor of 5, i.e. ${\omega}_2=5{\omega}_1$. The simulation results show 0.18% relative error in the diagonal elements ($m_{22}$ and $m_{33}$) and 200% relative error in the off-diagonal elements ($m_{23}$ and $m_{32}$), when we compare errors caused by misalignment of the analyzer to those caused by initial misalignment of the quarter-wave plates. We can use these results in measuring accurate Mueller matrices of optical materials.

Using a Shack-Hartmann sensor and sub-wavelength sized pinhole point source, we develope an optical testing system that measures the wavefront error of high numerical aperture and small sized optical components. The subwavelength sized pinhole generates perfect spherical waves with large diffraction angle and this makes possible to test high numerical aperture optics. The Shack-Hartmann sensor reconstructs the wavefront and calculates the aberrations. We make a home-made reference plane wave source which generates nearly perfect plane waves and the calibration with this plane source gives the overall uncertainty of the optical testing system 0.010 $\lambda$ rms.
An asymptotic solution of electro-magnetic waves diffracted by a dielectric wedge of the angle larger than $180^{\circ}$ is obtained in case of the incidence of a E-polarized plane wave. Based on the dual integral equation in the spectral domain, physical optics approximation is supplemented by correction currents distributed along the interfaces. Those currents are expanded in a series of Bessel functions, known as Neumann's expansion of which fractional order is chosen to satisfy the static edge condition as the limiting value of dynamic case. Numerical results of edge diffraction patterns and field patterns are presented for some typical cases.
