Experimental Study on the Damage of Concrete Material by Impact Load (충격 하중에 의한 콘크리트 재료의 손상에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Although the number of blasting operations in urban area are growing, lesser attentions have been paid to the effects of impact load on nearby concrete structures. In this study, the properties of concrete were obtained by both the sonic velocity and Schmidt rebound tests, and the degree of damage in concrete material was evaluated by measuring the sonic velocity in sample before and after applying the impact load. The test results shows that the sonic velocity decreases with the increase of intensity of impact load, and the degree of damage in concrete samples is lower when the samples have higher strength and sonic velocity.

  • Green water impact occurs frequently on offshore platform due to waves with a height greater relative to the freeboard of the structure. This phenomenon exerts a large impact load on the deck. In this paper, offshore platform models with green water protectors of various shapes were fixed to the center of a 3D wave tank to measure the impact pressure acting on the various points on deck and protectors. The impact pressure distribution differed depending on the protector shape, and various patterns of wave creeping up the protector were observed. The protector shape that exerted the lowest pressure impact on the deck will be useful in the deck design of offshore platform, and the model test results will be expected to be used for designers to select the best protector form.

  • This research is to analyze the wave propagation characteristics of anisotropic materials subjected to the low-velocity impact. For this purpose, a higher-order finite element program is used to simulate the dynamic behaviors according to the changes of material property, stacking sequence and dimension etc.. Materials for simulation are composed of $[0^{\circ}]_{10s}$, $[45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_{5s}$ and $[90^{\circ}]_{10s}$ stacking sequences. Finally, the results of this simulation are compared with those of wave propagation theory and then the impact responses and wave propagation phenomena are investigated.

  • A finite element program for elastic stress wave propagation is developed in order to investigate the shape of stress field and analysis the magnitude of stress wave intensity at time increment. Accuracy and reliance of the finite element analysis are acquired when the element size is smaller than the product of the stress wave speed and the critical value of increasing time step. In the finite element analysis and theoretical solution, the longitudinal stress wave is propagated to the similar direction of impact load, and the stress wave intensity is expressed in terms of the ratio of propagated area. The direction of shear wave is declined at an angle of 45 degrees compared with longitudinal stress wave and the speed of shear wave is half of the longitudinal stress wave.

  • As nation's infrastructure is getting old, nondestructive evaluation of existing structures and construction quality control are getting important. In this thesis, flaw detection techniques of concrete members with asphalt using impact echo test were introduced. This techniques are based on stress wave propagation. In this field impact echo test, As load is gradually increased, frequency is increased. From this change of frequency through impact echo test, we can detect that the crack of bridge ascends and what the depth of crack is.

Analysis of Dynamic Response Characteristics for 5 MW Jacket-type Fixed Offshore Wind Turbine

  • This study aims to evaluate the dynamic responses of the jacket-type offshore wind turbine using FAST software (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence). A systematic series of simulation cases of a 5 MW jacket-type offshore wind turbine, including wind-only, wave-only, wind & wave load cases are conducted. The dynamic responses of the wind turbine structure are obtained, including the structure displacement, rotor speed, thrust force, nacelle acceleration, bending moment at the tower bottom, and shear force on the jacket leg. The calculated time-domain results are transformed to frequency domain results using FFT and the environmental load with more impact on each dynamic response is identified. It is confirmed that the dynamic displacements of the wind turbine are dominant in the wave frequency under the incident wave alone condition, and the rotor thrust, nacelle acceleration, and bending moment at the bottom of the tower exhibit high responses in the natural frequency band of the wind turbine. In the wind only condition, all responses except the vertical displacement of the wind turbine are dominant at three times the rotor rotation frequency (considering the number of blades) generated by the wind. In a combined external force with wind and waves, it was observed that the horizontal displacement is dominant by the wind load. Additionally, the bending moment on the tower base is highly affected by the wind. The shear force of the jacket leg is basically influenced by the wave loads, but it can be affected by both the wind and wave loads especially under the turbulent wind and irregular wave conditions.

  • This study was investigated the nondestructive characteristics of the damage caused by low-velocity impact on symmetric cross-ply laminates. These laminates were $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]{_{16s,}}\;{_{24s,}}\;{_{32s,}}\;{_{48s}}$, that is, the thickness was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm. The impact machine, model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was used a drop-weight type with gravity. The impact velocities used in experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec. The load and deformation were increased as impact velocity increase. Even if the load increased with laminates thickness in same impact velocity, the deformation decreased. The extensional velocity was a quick as laminate thickness increase in same impact velocity and as impact velocity increase in same laminate thickness. In ultrasonic scans, damaged area was represented an dimmed zone. This is due to the fact that the wave, after having been partially reflected by the defects, has not enough energy to tough the oposite side or to come back from it. The damaged laminate areas were different according to the laminate thickness and the impact velocity. The extensional velocities became lower in if direction and higher in $0^{\circ}$ direction when the size of the defects increases. But, it was difficult to draw any conclusion for the extensional velocities in $45^{\circ}$ direction.

  • The study investigated the nondestructive characteristics of damage, caused by law-velocity impact, on symmetric cross-ply laminates, composed of [0o/90o]16s, 24s, 32s, 48s.   • This paper presents a new method for indentifying the location of impact source in a buried duct. In a gas pipeline, the problem of leakage occurs due to the mechanical load exerted by construction equipment. Such leakage can cause catastrophic disasters in gas supply industries. Generally, the cross-correlation method has been used for indentifying the location of impact source in a pipeline. Since this method involves the use of the dispersive acoustic wave, it derives an amount of error in process of estimating the time delay between acoustic sensors. The object of this paper is to estimate the time delay in the arrival of the direct wave by using the wavelet transform instead of the dispersive wave. The wavelet transform based method gives more accurate estimates of the impact location than the cross-correlation method does. This method is successfully used to identify the location of impact force in an actual buried gas duct.

A Study on the Design of Dolphin System for VLFS (부유식 해양구조물을 위한 돌핀 계류시스템의 설계 연구)

  • Dolphin mooring system can be a good candidate for the VLFS fastening system in view point of strength and effectiveness. In the design process of the dolphin system, precise calculation of the wave forces and the subsequent selecting the proper number of the piles adopted are one of the main factors. In this paper, one of the design process of the dolphin system is investigated and a proper configuration of the system is derived based on the structural characteristics of the system that was obtained through the structural analysis of the basic pile element confronted to the external loadings including wave impact load. It was found that lot the better design of ihe mooring system for VLFS, mono pile mooring system is more recommendable in a specific condition than other multi piles mooring system.
