A basic pulse tube refrigerator has been constructed with extensive instrumentation to study the characteristics of the heat exchanger experimentally under the oscillating pressure and the oscillating flow. This paper describes the sequential experiments with the basic pulse tube refrigerator. The experiments were performed for various cycle frequencies under the square pressure wave forms. First, the heat flux was measured through the cycle at the both cold and warm end heat exchangers without the regenerator. In order to enhance the thermal communication capability of the heat exchanger with the gas at low operating frequencies, a unique design of the triangular shape radial fin concept was applied to the heat exchangers. For the fin heat exchanger, the measured heat flux and the calculated heat flux from the two well-known oscillating heat transfer correlations were compared and discussed. Second, the regenerator was added to the pulse tube to make a basic pulse tube refrigerator configuration. The experiment showed the great impact of the regenerator on the temperature and the heat flux profiles. At the warm-end, the cyclic averaged heat flux had its maximum value at the specific operating frequency. The paper presents the explanation of the surface heat pumping effect as well as the experimental data.
This paper reports an example of flow-induced vibration in a very large plant and the whole procedure of reducing the vibration. During the operation of flue gas desurfurization unit of the thermal power plant, serious vibration occurred at all around the unit. The worst vibration was recorded on the heat exchanger surface, which weighed 180 tones, as 17.8 m/$s^2$ in vibration amplitude at 34Hz. To identify the vibration, frequency analysis on the response vibration, the expected excitation force and the system resonance was executed. This investigation revealed that the cause of the vibration was vortex shedding from the circular pipes in the heat exchanger. Vortices from the pipes excited acoustic resonance in the heat exchanger room, which, in turn, made the structure vibrate. Through inserting the baffles between the pipes, which had an effect of cutting the acoustic wave at resonance frequency, the vibration was eliminated dramatically.
Because the pure titanium has superior corrosion resistance and formability compared with different material, it is widely used as material of welded heat exchanger. When the welding of heat exchanger is carried out, certain area in which welding start and end are overlapped occurs. The humping of back bead is formed in the overlap area due to partial penetration. Thus in this study, the experiments were carried out by changing the length and wave shape of overlap area, and then the weldabiliay was evaluated through the observation of microstructure, the measurement of hardness and tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area. When overlap length was 9.8mm, humping bead was suppressed. The microstructure of overlap area coarsened and its hardness increased due to remelting. As a result of tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area according to applying the wave shape control, it was confirmed that the overlap area applied wave shape control had more excellent yield strength and ductility.
The performance of a plate heat exchanger for using liquid solution in the absorption chiller-heater was analyzed. The model was developed by using the various performance prediction correlations. The performance characteristics of the plate heat exchanger with the mass flow rate ratio was verified by using experimental data. To investigate performance of plate heat exchanger with geometry variables, the chevron angle, corrugated wave length, and corrugation depth were changed. As a result, the capacity of Kim and Martin correlation models was similar with the experimental data, and the capacity difference was less than 2%. Besides, the pressure drop of Marin correlation model showed a similar variation with experimental data, and the difference of pressure drop was less than 1.5 kPa.
A two-phase numerical model for plate-fin heat exchangers with plain fins and wave fins is studied incorporating the thermodynamic properties and the characteristics of fluid flow. The numerical simulations for the two fins in cryogenic conditions are earned out by employing a homogenous two-phase flow model with the CFD code ANSYS CFX. The heat transfer coefficients and the friction factor for nitrogen saturated vapor condensation process inside two types of plate fin heat exchanger are evaluated including the effects of saturation temperature (pressure), mass flow rate and inlet vapor quantity. The convective heat transfer coefficients and friction factors will be used for design of plate-fin type heat exchangers operating under cryogenic conditions.
Thermoacoustic refrigerators are operated with acoustic power to pump heat. The acoustic standing wave displaces the gas In the channels of the stack while compressing and expanding. The thermal interaction between the osillating gas he surface of the stack generates an acoustic heat pumping. in this study, a thermoacoustic refrigerator is composed of a resonator of 4cm diameter, stack of plates, heat exchangers and cooling part. Length of the hot heat exchangers, the stack of plates and the cold heat exchanger are 9mm, 8mm and 6mm respectively. Using helium as a coolant at frequency of 516Hz, the cold-part temperature of exchanger fell to $-19.0^{\circ}C$ after 1hours.

Four different data reduction methods for the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two heat and mass transfer models and two fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the reduced heat transfer coefficients revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity-independent heat transfer coefficients. Two fin efficiency models-enthalpy model and humidity model-yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies, and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.
The heat transfer and friction characteristics of the heat exchangers having sinusoidal wave fins were experimentally investigated. Twenty-nine samples having different waffle heights (1.5 mm and 2.0 m), fin pitches (1.3mm to 1.7mm) and tube rows (one to three) were tested. Focus was given to the effect of the waffle configuration (herringbone or sinusoidal) on the heat transfer and friction characteristics. Results show that the sinusoidal wave geometry provides higher heat transfer coefficients and friction factors than the herringbone wave geometry, and the difference increases as the number of row increases. The i/f ratios of the herringbone wave geometry, however, are larger than those of the sinusoidal wave geometry. Compared to the herringbone wave geometry, the sinusoidal wave geometry yielded a weak row effect, which suggests a superior heat transfer performance at the fully developed flow region. Possible explanation is provided considering the flow characteristics in wavy channels. Within the present geometric range, the effect of the waffle height on the heat transfer coefficient was not prominent. The effect of the fin pitch was also negligible. Existing correlations highly overpredicted both the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A new correlation was developed using the present data.

The heat transfer and friction characteristics of heat exchangers having convex louver fins are experimentally investigated, and the results are compared with those of wave fin counterparts. Eighteen samples (nine convex louver fin samples and nine wave fin samples) which had different fm pitches (1.81 mm to 2.54 mm) and tube rows (one to four) were tested. The convex angle was $11.7^{\circ}$. The j factors are insensitive to fin pitch, while f factors increase as fin pitch increases. The effect of fin pitch on f factor is more significant for the wave fin compared with the convex louver fin. It appears that the complex fin pattern of the convex louver fin induces intense mixing of the flow, and thus reduces the effect of fin pitch. Both the j and f factors decrease as the number of tube row increases. However, as the Reynolds number increases, the effect of tube row diminishes. Comparison of the convex louver fin j factors with those of wave fin reveals that convex louver fin j factors are 18% to 29% higher than those of wave fin. The f factors are 16% to 34% higher for the convex louver fin. The difference increases as fin pitch decreases. Existing correlation fails to adequately predict the present data. More data is needed for a general correlation of the convex louver fin geometry.
