  • Following a preceding study of Shin et al.(2004), wave fields for a month of September of 2003 are simulated based on the modified WAM cycle 4 model that enables the precise wave hindcasting with fine spatial meshes, and characteristics of extreme waves at the south coast of Korea are analyzed The accuracy of applied wave model is verified by comparing computed wave parameters and corresponding ones measured at Ieodo ocean research station. The wave hindcasting of typhoon 'Maemi' with an hour time interval reveals the extreme wave characteristics at 4 primary locations of south coast of Korea as follows: 1) At the front sea of Chaguido in the south of Jeju-do, the maximum significant wave height, mean wave period and mean wave direction appear to be 7.41m, 13.65s and $6.4^{\circ}$ respectively at 16:00 KST of Sep. 12, 2003. 2) At the entrance of Masan Bay, 12.50m, 13.65s and $1.2^{\circ}$ at 21:00 KST of Sep. 12. 3) At the front sea of Suyoung Bay, 13.85m, 13.81s and $0.2^{\circ}$ at 22;00 KST of Sep. 12. 4) At the front sea of Ulsan port, l1.00m, 13.25s and $2.8^{\circ}$ at 23:00 KST of Sep. 12.

  • A two-dimensional numerical method for inviscid two-fluid flows with evolution of density interface is developed, and an initially stationary two-dimensional fluid sheet surrounded by another fluid is studied. The Interface between two fluids is modeled as a vertex sheet, and the flow field u÷th the evolution of interface is solved by using vortex-in-cell/front-tracking method. The edge of the sheet Is pulled back into the sheet due to surface tension and a blob is formed at the edge. This blob and fluid sheet are connected by a thin neck. In the inviscid limit, such process of the blob and neck formation is examined in detail and their kinematic characteristics are summarized with dimensionless parameters. The edge recedes at $V=1.06({\sigma}/{\rho}h)^{0.5}$ and the capillary wave Propagating into the fluid sheet must be considered for bettor understanding of the edge receding.

  • An investigation into the influence of ultrasonic standing wave on the structural behavior of propane/air premixed flame has been made to get a clue to the combustion reaction acceleration and combustion instability. Visualization technique utilizing the Schlieren photography was employed for the observation of structural variation of the flame reaction zone. Evolutionary characteristics of the flame front were caught by the high-speed Schlieren image, through which local flame velocity of the moving front were analyzed in detail.

  • The wave height distributions in front of a vertically perforated wall structures for obliquely incident uni-directional irregular waves are mainly investigated by using 3D hydraulic experiments. The difference and similarity of wave propagation along the plain and perforated wall structures are investigated and particularly the effects of side walls in chamber and relative chamber width are analyzed. This study shows that the wave height distribution patterns for normalized wave heights in front of structure is significantly different between the plain and perforated wall structures, and the side wall in the chamber suppresses the growth of waves.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of an ultrasonic standing-wave field to the behavior of methane/air premixed flame. Visualization technique utilizing the schlieren method was employed for the observation of premixed flame behavior. The shape of flame front and local flame velocity were measured according to the variation of reactants pressure and chamber opening/closing condition. The flame front was distorted and severely deformed to a lotus-type flame by the interaction of ultrasonic standing-wave and the reflection wave coming from an end wall of reactor.

  • This study examines the reflection of a partially perforated wall with single chamber by 2D and 3D hydraulic experiments. The effects of slit shape on the front wall, relative chamber width and wave steepness were discussed. For the normal incident wave condition, the reflections of horizontal slit case were lower than that of the vertical slit with the similar porosity, but the differences are not significant. When the wave steepness is relatively small, the reflection coefficients are large. In the oblique incidence, the normalized wave heights along a perforated wall with similar porosity are almost same for the vertical and horizontal slit walls and therefore the difference by slit shape can be ignored.

  • The three-dimensional structure of detonation wave propagating in a circular tube was investigated using a parallel computational code developed previously. A series of parametric study for a circular tube of a fixed diameter gave the formation mechanism of the detonation cell structures depending on pre-exponential factor, k. The unsteady results in three-dimension showed the mechanisms of two, three and four cell mode of detonation wave front structures. The detonation cell number was increased but cell width and length were decreased with increased pre-exponential factor k. In the all multi-cell mode, the detonation wave structure and smoked-foil records on the wall are made by the moving of transverse waves. The detonation wave front structures have the regular polygon and windmill shapes periodically.

  • This study is conducted to scrutinize agitation effects of an ultrasonic standing wave on the dynamic behavior of methane/air premixed flame. The propagating flame is caught by high-speed schlieren images, through which flame front and local flame velocity are analyzed and obtained, too. It is revealed that the propagation velocity with ultrasonic standing wave is larger than the case without excitation except around the flammability limits. Also, vertical locations of distortions and depth of dents of the front are constant, unless the ultrasonic standing wave characteristics are not changed.

  • Propulsion of gene coated micro-particles is desired for non-intrusive drug delivery inside biological tissue. This has been achieved by the development of a device that uses high power laser pulses. The present paper looks at the mechanisms of micro-particle acceleration. Initially, a high power laser pulse is focused onto the front side of a thin aluminium foil leading to its ablation. The ablation front drives a compression wave inside the foil, thus leading to the formation of a shock wave, which will later reflect from the rear side of the foil, due to acoustic impedance mismatch. The reflected wave will induce an opposite motion of the foil, characterized by a very high speed, of the order of several millimeters per microsecond. Micro-particles, which are deposited on the rear side of the foil, thus get accelerated and ejected as micro-projectiles and are able to penetrate several hundreds of micrometers inside tissue-like material. These processes have been observed experimentally by using high-speed shadowgraphy and considered analytically.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the amount of available wave power and its characteristics related to the development of apractical system for ocean wave energy conversion in Korean coastal waters. The analysis method of wave power was established through comparison between theory and numerical simulation of deep sea wave by Inverse Fourier Transform with random phase method. Based on the results of comparison, wave power was estimated by use of data set from observed offshore and coastal waves and hindasted deep sea waves around the Korean peninsula. Annual mean wave power is estimated as about 1.8 ~ 7.0 kW for every metre of wave frontage at East sea, 1.5~5.3 kW at South sea and 1.0 ~ 4.1 kW at West sea, respectively. Mean wave power along deep sea front of coastal waters of Korea amounts to about 4.7 GW. Regional distribution and seasonal variation of wave power were discussed to develop practical utilization system of wave power of not so high grade of available wave power.
