The supersonic jet discharging from a petal nozzle is known to enhance mixing effect with the surrounding gas because it produces strong longitudinal vortices due to the velocity difference from both the major and minor axes of petal nozzle. In the present study, the supersonic free jet discharging from the petal nozzle is investigated experimentally. The nozzles used are 4, 6, and 8 lobed petal nozzles with a design Mach number of 1.7, and the flow fields are compared with a circular nozzle with the same design Mach number. The pitot impact pressures are measured using a fine pilot probe. The flow fields are visualized using a Schlieren optical method. The results show that the petal nozzle has more increased supersonic length compared with the circular jet.
This paper describes the process of nanoparticle synthesis by laser ablation of consolidated microparticles. We have generated nanoparticles by high-power pulsed laser ablation of Al, Cu and Ag microparticles using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 355 nm, FWHM 5 ㎱, fluence 0.8∼2.0 J/㎠). Microparticles of mean diameter 18∼80 ㎛ are ablated in the ambient air The generated nanoparticles are collected on a glass substrate and the size distribution and morphology are examined using a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. The effect of laser fluence and collector position on the distribution of particle size is investigated. The dynamics of ablation plume and shock wave is analyzed by monitoring the photoacoustic probe-beam deflection signal. Nanosecond time-resolved images of the ablation process are also obtained by laser flash shadowgraphy. Based on the experimental results, discussions are made on the dynamics of ablation plume.
The monitoring and investigation of underwater landslide help to understand its mechanism, increase the usefuless of design and construction and reduce the losses. This paper presents three high resolution geophysical techniques electrical resisitance, ultrasonic wave reflection imaging, and shear wave tomography conducted to determine the lab-scaled submerged landslide. Electrical resistance profiles of a soil mass obtained by an electrical resistance probe provide detailed information to assess the spatial distribution of the soil mass with milimetric resolution. An ultrasonic wave image obtained by recording the reflections from interfaces of different impedance materials permits detecting layers and landslide with submilimetric resolution. The pixel based image of immersed landslides is created by the inversion of the boundary information achieved from the traveling time of shear waves. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic wave imaging and the electrical resistance can provide complementary information; and their association with S-wave tomography image can produce a 3-D view of the underwater landslide. This study suggests that geophysical techniques may be effective tools for the detection of the underwater landslides and spatial distribution offshore.

Traditional ultrasonic evaluation to detect micro/small surface cracks is the pulse-echo technique using the normal immersion transducer with high frequency, or the angle beam transducer with surface wave. It is difficult to make the automatic ultrasonic system that is to detect micro and small surface crack and position on the large structure like steel and ceramic rolls, because of the huge data of inspection and the ambiguous position data of transducer. The aim of this study using the high precision scanning acoustic microscope with 10MHz large aperture transducer was to display the real time A, B, C-scan for the automatic ultrasonic system in order to detect the existence and position of surface crack. The ultrasonic method with large aperture transducer was improved the scanning time and speed over 10times faster than traditional methods.

In this paper, two ports feeding a microstrip patch antenna using a quadrature hybrid circuit was proposed to enhance the bandwidth for the global positioning system(GPS). The square patch was designed, and the probe feeding was applied. The quadrature hybrid chip circuit for two-port feeding was designed, and output ports that have a 90-degree phase difference feed to the patch antenna. The designed patch and quadrature hybrid circuit were implemented on an FR4 board, and were combined. The measurement of the bandwidth within a voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR) of 2:1 and axial ratio(AR) in 3dB were wide band as 29% BW (1,230~1,700 MHz) and 15.87% BW (1,400~1,650 MHz), respectively. Antenna gain were measured 2.75dBi at the center frequency.
This study was tried to form the silica waveguide using high density plasma. Plasma characteristics have been investigated as a function of etch parameters using a single Langmuir probe and optical emission spectroscopy(OES). As etch parameters, $CF_4/CHF_3$ ratio, bias power, and source power were chosen as main variables. The oxide etch characteristics of inductively coupled plasma(ICP) dry etcher such as the etch rate, etch profile, and surface roughness were investigated s a function of etch parameters. On the basis of these results, the core pattern of the wave guide composed of $SiO_2-P_2O_5$ was formed. It was confirmed that the etch rate of $SiO_2-P_2O_5$ core layer was 380 nm/min and the aluminum selectivity to oxide, that is, mask layer was approximately 30:1. The SEM images showed vertical etched profiles and minimal loss of pattern width.

We have developed SH (shear horizontal) surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors for detection of the immobilization and hybridization of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) on the gold coated delay line of transverse SAW devices. The experiments of DNA immobilization and hybridization were performed with 15-mer oligonucleotides (probe and complementary target DNA). The sensor consists of twin SAW delay line oscillators operating at 100 MHz fabricated on $36^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut $LiTaO_3$ piezoelectric single crystals. The relative change in the frequency of the two oscillators was monitored to detect the hybridization between target DNA and immobilized probe DNA in pH 7.4 PBS (phosphate buffered saline) solution. The measurement results showed a good response of the sensor to the mass loading effects of the DNA immobilization and hybridization with the sensitivity up to $1.55{\cal}ng/{\cal}ml/Hz$.

The resonance properties due to the surface plasmon(SP) excitation of metal nanoparticles make the nanocomposite films promising for various applications such as optical switching devices. In spite of the well-known ultra-sensitive operation of optical switches based on a guided wave, the application of nanocomposite film(NC) has inherent limitation originating from the excessive optical loss related with the surface plasmon resonance(SPR). In this study, we addressed this problem and present the experimental and theoretical analysis on the pump-probe optical switching in prism-coupled Au(1 vol.%):$SiO_2$ nanocomposite waveguide film. The guided mode was successfully generated using a near infrared probe beam of 1550 nm and modulated with an external pump beam of 532 nm close to the SPR wavelength. We extend our approach to ultra-fast operation using a pulsed laser with 5 ns pulse width. To improve the switching speed through the reduction in thermal loading effect accompanied by the resonant absorption of pump beam light, we adopted a metallic film as a coupling layer instead of low-index dielectric layer between the high-index SF10 prism and NC slab waveguide. We observed great enhancement in switching speed for the case of using metallic coupling layer, and founded a distinct difference in origin of optical nonlinearities induced during switching operation using cw and ns laser.
Over the past half century, borehole seismic surveys have been diversified into the three techniques such as crosshole, downhole, and suspension logging according to their devices and testing configurations. These field techniques have been improved, in terms of equipment and testing procedures, and are very valuable in the evaluation of ground characteristics for geotechnical and earthquake engineering problems. Yet, despite the importance and significance of the techniques as engineering tools, the techniques are not much used as standard penetration test (SPT) by practicing engineers. The possible explanations are cost and operational difficulties of the surveys as well as sophistication and complexity of the devices. An in-hole seismic method has been developed to meet the requirement of economical testing cost and practicality in engineering practice to measure dynamic soil properties. The prototype in-hole probe developed herein is small and light enough to be fit in three-inch boreholes and to be handled with bare hands. The performance of the source has been evaluated through extensive crosshole tests at various sites. The in-hole seismic method was adopted at three test sites and verified by comparing with crosshole results.
