  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate effects of increased breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) which is the standard measurement of alcohol consumption in sobriety test under current laws on visual acuity and values of objective refraction. Methods: For twenty three males in 20s (average age $21.17{\pm}2.19$ years, body mass index (BMI) $22.09{\pm}2.16$) were selected. Distance and near visual test was performed at BrAC of 0%, 0.05% and 0.08%, and objective refraction with open-field auto-refractometer was also performed at different BrAC. Results: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, distance visual acuity was decreased, which was statistically significant, but near visual acuity was not changed. Also, values of objective refraction tended to be increased towards minus as breath alcohol concentration is increased. Conclusions: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, corrected visual acuity is decreased and refractive power is towards minus, it is necessary that visual acuity test and refraction measurement should be conducted under sober condition.

  • Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) statistic has been widely used for testing homogeneity of two distributions in the credit rating models. Joseph (2005) used K-S statistic to obtain validation criteria which is most well-known. There are other homogeneity test statistics such as the Cramer-von Mises, Anderson-Darling, and Watson statistics. In this paper, these statistics are introduced and applied to obtain criterion of these statistics by extending Joseph (2005)'s work. Another set of alternative criterion is suggested according to various sample sizes, type a error rates, and the ratios of bads and goods by using the simulated data under the similar situation as real credit rating data. We compare and explore among Joseph's criteria and two sets of the proposed criterion and discuss their applications.

  • For Cu-Cr alloy developed for rocket engines, estimated fatigue lives were calculated using various fatigue life prediction methods and compared with fatigue life acquired from low-cycle fatigue tests. The utilized methods for fatigue life prediction are as follows: Coffin-Manson relation, plastic/total strain energy density relations, Smith-Watson-Topper relation, Tomkins relation, and Jahed-Varvani relation. As results of estimation of fatigue lives, it satisfied within scatter band two compared to the test fatigue lives in all methods. The quantitative calculation of the deviation of predicted fatigue lives gives that the total strain energy density relation presents the best result.

  • We employed various econometic methods to estimate the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of elecricity demand in Korea and compared the forecasting power of those methods. Cointegration models (ADL model, Engle-Granger model, Full Informtion Maximum Likelihood method by Johansen and Juselius) and Dynamic OLS by Stock and Watson were considered. The forecasting power test shows that Dynamic OLS has the best forecasting power. According to Dynamic OLS, the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of electricity demand in Korea are 0.13 and -0.40, respectively.

  • The Design of Experiment (DOE) is a most practical technique when establishing an optimal condition for production technology in Six Sigma innovation project. This research proposes the assessment of properties of error terms, such as normality, equal variance, unbiasedness and independence. The properties of six nonparametric ranking techniques for checking normality assumption are discussed as well as run test which is used to identify the randomness, and to check unbiased assumption. Furthermore, Durbin-Watson (DW) statistics and ARIMA (p,d,q) process are discussed to identify the serial correlation.

  • In case measurements are made on units of production in time order, it is reasonable to expect that the measurement errors will sometimes be first order autocorrelated, and a technique to test such autocorrelation is required to give good control of the productive process. Tool-wear process provide an example for which regression model can sometimes be useful in modeling and controlling the process. For the control of such process, we present a simple method for testing first order autocorrelation in regression errors. The method is based on Bayesian test method via Bayes factor and derived by observing that in general, a Bayes factor can be written as the product of a quantity called the Savage-Dickey density ratio and a correction factor ; both terms are easily estimated from Gibbs sampling technique. Performance of the method is examined by means of Monte Carlo simulation. It is noted that the test not only achieves satisfactory power but eliminates the inconvenience occurred in using the well-known Durbin-Watson test.

  • Fatigue life prediction of a multi-row countersunk riveted lap joint was performed numerically. The stress and strain conditions in a highly stressed substructure of the joint were analysed using a global/local finite element (FE) model coupling approach. After validation of the FE models using experimental strain measurements, the stress/strain condition in the local three-dimensional (3D) FE model was simulated under a fatigue loading condition. This local model involved multiple load cases with nonlinearity in material properties, geometric deformation, and contact boundary conditions. The resulting stresses and strains were used in the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) strain life equation to assess the fatigue "initiation life", defined as the life to a 0.5 mm deep crack. Effects of the rivet-hole clearance and rivet head deformation on the predicted fatigue life were identified, and good agreement in the fatigue life was obtained between the experimental and the numerical results. Further crack growth from a 0.5 mm crack to the first linkup of two adjacent cracks was evaluated using the NRC in-house tool, CanGROW. Good correlation in the fatigue life was also obtained between the experimental result and the crack growth analysis. The study shows that the selected methodology is promising for assessing the fatigue life for the lap joint, which is expected to improve research efficiency by reducing test quantity and cost.

  • This study aimed to verify the mediating effect of locus of control on the relationship between materialism and well-being of middle-aged woman. For the study, the survey of 239 middle-aged women in B, C, D city was used. As a scale, a Richins & Dawson(1992)'s widely-used materialism scale, the Levenson(1981)'s locus of scale, Watson, Clark & Tellegen(1988)'s positive and negative affect scale (PANAS) and Ryff(1989)'s psychological well-being scale(PWBS) were used. The survey data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, reliability, correlation and the mediating effect was verified by Baron & Kenny (1986)'s 3 step using SPSS 23 and sobel test. Mediating analysis indicated that the significant relationships between materialism and affective well-being and psychological well-being were reduced significantly when the external locus of control was statistically controlled. Results are meaningful with respect to overcome materialism of middle-aged woman and in the relation to other research that has explored reasons why materialism is related to lower level of affective well-being & psychological well-being.
