HSPF model based on BASINS was applied for the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed (HRW) to evaluate the feasibility of water quality management. The watershed was divided into 45 sub-basins considering various watershed environment. Streamflow was calibrated based on the measured meteorological data, discharge data of treatment plants and observed streamflow data for 2010 year. Then the model was calibrated against the field measurements of water qualities, including BOD, T-N and T-P. In most cases, there were reasonable agreements between observed and predicted data. The validated model was used to analyze the characterization of pollutant load from study area. As a result, Non-point source pollutant loads during the rainy season was about 66~78% of total loads. In rainy-season, water quality parameters depended on precipitation and pollutant loads patterns, but their concentration were not necessarily high during the rainy season, and showed a decreasing trend with increasing water flow. As another result of evaluation for load duration curves, in order to improve water qualities to the satisfactory level, the watershed managements considering both time-variant and pollution sources must be required in the HRW. Overall, it was found that the model could be used conveniently to assess watershed characteristics and pollutant loads in watershed scale.
In this study, some of the model verification results of STREAM (Spatio-Temporal River-basin Ecohydrology Analysis Model), a newly-developed hybrid watershed model, are presented for the runoff processes of nonpoint source pollution. For verification study of STREAM, the model was applied to a test watershed and a sensitivity analysis was also carried out for selected parameters. STREAM was applied to the Mankyung River Watershed to review the applicability of the model in the course of model calibration and validation against the stream flow discharge, suspended sediment discharge and some water quality items (TOC, TN, TP) measured at the watershed outlet. The model setup, simulation and data I/O modules worked as designed and both of the calibration and validation results showed good agreement between the simulated and the measured data sets: NSE over 0.7 and $R^2$ greater than 0.8. The simulation results also include the spatial distribution of runoff processes and watershed mass balance at the watershed scale. Additionally, the irrigation process of the model was examined in detail at reservoirs and paddy fields.
Distributed models represent watersheds using a network of numerous, uniform calculation units to provide spatially detailed and consistent evaluations across the watershed. However, these models have a disadvantage in general requiring a high computing cost. Semi-distributed models, on the other hand, delineate watersheds using a simplified network of non-uniform calculation units requiring a much lower computing cost than distributed models. Employing a simplified network of non-uniform units, however, semi-distributed models cannot but have limitations in spatially-consistent simulations of hydrogeochemical processes and are often not favoured for such a task as identifying critical source areas within a watershed. Aiming to overcome these shortcomings of both groups of models, a hybrid watershed model STREAM (Spatio-Temporal River-basin Ecohydrology Analysis Model) was developed in this study. Like a distributed model, STREAM divides a watershed into square grid cells of a same size each of which may have a different set of hydrogeochemical parameters reflecting the spatial heterogeneity. Like many semi-distributed models, STREAM groups individual cells of similar hydrogeochemical properties into representative cells for which real computations of the model are carried out. With this hybrid structure, STREAM requires a relatively small computational cost although it still keeps the critical advantage of distributed models.
The purpose of this study is to realize the teaching material, which develops the Model of Watershed Water Environment Education(EE) Textbook, by seeking for a method of the Inquiry with the Perspective of EE and by questing for the contents of watershed water environment necessary for Water EE with the Perspective of EE. First, the value of watershed EE was reilluminated through the literature analysis on the watershed. And 'Inquiry with the Perspective of EE' methodology was newly presented that quests for the contents necessary and proper for EE from the viewpoint of EE. Also, with suggesting it as concept and methodology of 'Inquiry with the Perspective of Watershed EE' by considering the value of EE in Water EE, it presented the content approach direction in the inquiry and the contents of the specific inquiry. Second, through the Inquiry with the Perspective of EE into water environment of the watershed Musim cheon (stream), which is a case region, it allowed the watershed water environment to be able to be synthetically understood. As for a sphere of the inquiry, 5 spheres were sought by taking into account a relation to a human being, as well as the water environment itself of the watershed Musim cheon (stream). Third, Based on the contents of the Inquiry with the Perspective of EE into the watershed Mlisim cheon (stream), 'the Model of Watershed Water EE Textbook' for middle-school students was developed. This model of textbook was selected largely four parts, and was organized with 10 learning objectives and 11 activities.

The Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is a watershed management system that involves the establishment of the target water quality, the calculation of permission loading (allocation loading), and the control of total pollutants for each unit watershed. Allocation loading is assessed through the comprehensive implementation assessment of the previous year's plan. Assessment results are used for follow-up management measures such as the limit of development and updating of TMDL Management Implementation Plans for the next planning period. Although detailed assessment criteria are important, they are not currently available. Therefore, we suggested assessment criteria by comparing two methods('integration method' and 'separation method') using combination point and non-point discharge loading. We also examined the penalty criteria considering controllable load local government and updating methods of the TMDL Management Implementation Plan for the next planning period.
This study was conducted to characterize the discharge feature of pollutant load from the upper and lower watershed influencing on the water quality of South Han River using the empirical equation and Factor Analysis. The results of regression analysis between flow rate and pollutant load were as follows. In the streams of the upper watershed of South Han river, $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ were increased as the flow rate was increased. Also, steep increases in SS and TP were observed with positive correlation with the flow rate while change in TN was slightly shown. On the other hand, in the streams of the lower watershed of South Han river, $BOD_5$ was negatively correlated with the flow rate, being decreased with the increase in the flow rate. However, changes in $COD_{Mn}$, TN, SS, and TP showed a similar trend with those observed in the upper watershed. With Factor Analysis of the water quality and various components, it was appeared that the flow rate, SS, and TP were significantly correlated each other and they were indicated as the principal component influencing on water quality in the streams of the upper watershed. In contrast, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC were significantly correlated each other and they were included as the principal pollution component of the streams in the lower watershed. From these results, it was conclusive that the upper watershed of South Han River was mainly affected by non point source pollutants while the lower watershed was influenced by point source pollutants from the developed areas.
Proper management of small rural watershed is important since it does affect water quality improvement of larger scale watershed. Therefore, effective small watershed management guideline including participatory program of local people is required to achieve water environment improvement. Feasibility of water quality goal, short and long-term watershed management plan and funding sources were investigated by field monitoring of Hampyungchun watershed which has characteristics of rural stream, and literature review. The relevant parties and their roles fer watershed management were identified and suggested. A hybrid model, that is mixture of government driven model and NGO model, is recommended for watershed management organization in this study.
HSPF model based on BASINS was applied to analyze effects of watershed management measures for water quality conservation in the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. The model was calibrated against the field measurements of meteorological data, streamflow and water qualities ($BOD_5$, T-N, T-P) at each observatory for 4 years (2007-2010). The water quality characteristics of inflow streams were evaluated. The 4 scenarios for the water quality improvement were applied to inflow streams and critical area from water pollution based on previous researches. The reduction efficiency of point and non-point sources in inflow streams was evaluated with each scenario. The results demonstrate that the expansion of advanced treatment system within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and construction of pond-wetlands would be great effective management measures. In order to satisfactory the target water quality of reservoir, the measures which can control both point source and non-point source pollutants should be implemented in the watershed.

The major 24 tributaries in Nam-River mid-watershed were monitored for discharge and water quality in order to understand the characteristics of the watershed and to select the tributary catchment for improving water quality. According to the analytical results of discharge and water quality monitoring data of 24 tributaries, the mean value of discharge below $0.1m^3/s$ was 62.5% among the monitored tributaries and it mostly exceeded the water quality standards of Nam-river mid-watershed ($BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over). According to the stream grouping method and the water quality delivery load density ($kg/day/km^2$) based on the results of tributary discharge and water quality monitoring, the tributary watersheds for improving the water quality were selected. In the Nam-River mid-watershed, tributaries in the GaJwaCheon, HaChonCheon catchment (Group D, $BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L over) and in the UirYeongCheon, SeokGyoCheon catchment (Group A, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over), which have a small flow (and/or large flow) and a high concentrations of water pollutants. The various water quality improving scheme for tributaries, in accordance with the reduction of potential point source pollution by living sewage and livestock wastewater, should be established and implemented.

To effective a watershed management, it is necessary to have one or more quantitative measures that can be used to evaluate the relationship between pollutant sources and their impact on water quality. Such measurable quantities are termed indicators. Once an indicator has been selected, a target value for that indicator must be established that seek to distinguish between the impaired and unimpaired state of the waterbody. Various factors will be considered for the selection of an appropriate watershed management indicator. For example, available data, application, management conditions, cost, etc. This paper lists various factors that should be addressed in choosing a watershed management indicators and investigates applicable indicators during watershed management period.
