Although rock excavation is necessary for the effective utilization of urban space, most conventional rock excavation methods, including the blasting method, cause high noise and vibration. Meanwhile, if a high pressure waterjet system is applied to excavate underground spaces in urban areas, the public grievance can be reduced by low noise and vibration. In this study, an abrasive waterjet system is designed and developed to study the influence of various performance parameters such as jet pressure, nozzle traverse speed, stand-off distance, or abrasive feed rate on waterjet excavation performance in laboratory. Using the developed waterjet system, rock drilling characteristics are identified by measuring drilling depths as a function of the jet exposure time. The drilling depth linearly increases with increasing the jet exposure time(under 60sec). Rock cutting characteristics are also obtained with various jet pressures(1600~3200kg/$cm^2$) and nozzle traverse speeds(1.9~14.1mm/s): The cutting depth is nonlinearly related to the jet pressure and traverse speed. Indeed, the cutting depth increases with an increase in the jet pressure and a decrease in the nozzle traverse speed. This trend can be explained by energy transferring/loss mechanism.
The performance of the waterjet system of 180 ton class fishing guard ship has been experimentally studied. A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages in comparison with a conventional screw propeller especially for high speed craft because of its good cavitation performance. Recently waterjet system has been applied to fishing boats and fishing guard ship because of avoiding a net problem although their speeds are not so high. This paper describes experimental procedure and analysis method of resistance and self-propulsion tests with a 1/14.46-scale model. Experimental results were analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard method. The full-scale effective power and delivered power of the ship were also analyzed and the full-scale speed predicted from the model test results shows a good agreement with the full-scale result from the sea trial tests.
It is recognized that tetrafluoromethane ($CF_4$) has a great influence on global warming. The $CF_4$ is known to have a large impact on climate change due to its large global warming index. In this study, a waterjet plasma scrubber (WPS) was designed and manufactured for the $CF_4$ decomposition. The WPS is a novel technology which is combined a gliding arc plasma and water injection at the center of the plasma discharge. This can give an innovative way for $CF_4$ decomposition by achieving larger plasma columnand generating OH radicals. A performance analysis was achieved for the design factors such as waterjet flow rate, total gas flow rate, consumption electric power, and electrode gap. The highest $CF_4$ decomposition and energy efficiencies were 64.8% and 6.43 g/kWh, respectively; Optimal operating conditions were 20 mL/min of waterjet flow rate, 200 L/min total gas flow rate, 5.3 kW consumption electric power, and 4.4 mm electrode gap. As for the 2 stage reactor of the WPS, the $CF_4$ decomposition efficiency improved as the 85.3% while the energy efficiency decreased as the 5.57 g/kWh.
The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.
This paper describes the performance of small waterjet propulsion system and show the influence of performance for nozzle shape and area. The installed engine sets a limit on maximum power in below 1800 rpm for fuel saving. Our designated target is reached by redesign of the impeller considering engine characteristics and extention of nozzle pararell part. The results of the full-scale ships are compared with thoes of the model test. In the future, those experimental data will be applied to the relation study between engine characteristics and powering performance prediction.
