  • Due to low annual average temperature, road tunnel lining in domestic cold region (Gangwon province) experiences durability problems. The financial and human damage due to cracks, breakout, exfoliation and water leakage increases every year. However, domestic research on effect of temperature on road tunnel lining damage is insufficient. Thus, this research has investigated 70 tunnels located in cold region (Gangwon-do) to analyze damage status. Furthermore, by contrasting damage on tunnels in relatively warm Gangneung area with those in relatively cold Hongcheon area, the effect of temperature on road tunnel lining damage was analyzed.

  • Shear modulus (or rigidity) of dam material is an important parameter which can be directly associated with the deformation of dam. Seepage or leakage of water can cause the defects or cracks of dam body. The existence of cracks and rigidity of dam body are decisive information for the estimation of dam safety. Rigidity of material is mainly determined from S-wave velocity and the defects of dam body can be detected by seismic reflection survey. Therefore, seismic reflection survey will be a desirable method which can give a solution about dam safety problem. Among various physical properties of dam body, S-wave velocity is the most important information but it is not easy to get the information. In this study, diverse measuring techniques of S-wave reflection survey were attempted to get the information about S-wave velocity of dam body. Ultimately, S-wave velocity could be estimated by the analysis of SH reflection events which can be easily observed in shot gather data obtained from SH measuring technique. Meanwhile, P-wave reflection survey was also performed at the same profile. P-beam radiation technique which can reduce the surface waves and reinforce the P-wave reflection events was applied for giving a help to analyse P-wave velocity. In the end, P-and S-wave velocity, Vs/Vp, Poisson's ratio distribution of the vertical section under the profile could be acquired.

  • The STS310S tube has excellent heat transfer ability and is widely used as the material for heat transfer tubes in heat exchange devices. Mixtures of gas and water flow inside the tube whereas hot flame flows outside it. In this environment, the material of the tube may undergo embrittlement, which can cause leakage. Cracks can propagate from the inside of the tube to its outside and result in brittle fracture. This study identified the cause of brittle fracture in the STS310S tube through experiments and discussion, and proposed solutions to prevent fracture.

  • Most concrete gravity-type dams in and out of the country were constructed by column method to control cracks caused by concrete hydration heat generated during construction, resulting in a certain level of leakage after impoundment through various causes, such as contraction joints and construction joints. However, due to the characteristics of concrete structures that shrink and expand according to temperature, concrete dams have vertical joints and drains to allow penetration. PVC waterproof shows excellent effects in completion of the dam, which however increases the possibility of interfacial failure due to different thermal expansion. Other causes of penetration may include problems with quality control during installation, generation of cracks due to heat of hydration of concrete, waterproofing methods, etc. In the case of Bohyunsan Dam in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, the amount of drainage in the gallery was checked and underwater, and it was confirmed that there are many penetrations from drainage holes connected to vertical joints, and that some of the PVC waterproofs are not fully operated. As a new method to prevent penetration through vertical joints, D.S.I.M. (Dam Sealing Innovation Method) developed by World E&C was applied to Bohyunsan Dam and checked the amount of drainage in the gallery. As a result of first testing three most leaking vertical joints, the drain in the gallery was reduced by 87% on the average and then applied to the remaining 13 locations, which showed a 83% reduction effect based on the total drain in the gallery. Summing up these results, it was found that D.S.I.M. preventing water leakage from the upstream face is a valid construction method to reduce the water see-through and penetration quantity seen in downstream faces of concrete dams. If D.S.I.M. is applied to other concrete dams at domestic and abroad, it is expected that it will be very effective to prevent water leakage through vertical joints that are visible from downstream faces.

  • This paper studied the cause of the deterioration of the four 3-Arch tunnels built in mid-1990. The common deteriorations of the four 3-Arch tunnels were longitudinal cracks, leakage and efflorescence at the same parts of lining concrete. Three fourths of 3-Arch tunnels, there was high percentage longitudinal cracks and a quarter was low frequency about longitudinal cracks. So the material reviewed to find out the differences between two groups in construction process and analysis was conducted such as non-destructive testing, precise visual survey and safety evaluation of one tunnel which had bad ground condition As the result, the tunnels were safety condition and the primary deterioration occurred during the construction process, namely, problems arrangement of rebar and the effects of the blast at middle tunnel.

  • A Plate type pipe is used for heat exchange in radiator of a vehicle. The pipe has several rooms through which water flows and heat is dissipated into outside . In the case that there are small holes, cracks or some scratches on the plate, the radiators lost their functions due to Leakage. This may result in overheating of engine in a car. Thus, we need to perform the entire inspection of the plate type pipe in advance before assembling the radiator. In manufacturing process of the plate type pipe, the productive speed is very high and that may be performed continuously. So, there is no room to perform the outlook inspection by typical image processing techniques. This paper proposes a new method to inspect the outlook surface of the plate type pipe automatically with high speed. Especially, the sequential processing technique of an algorithm which detects defects on the surfaces of the plate type pipe is proposed for line scan camera which captures line image. To evaluate the inspection performance, a series of experiments is performed.

  • Recently, as construction market scale is getting bigger and transportation industry is developing, the underground structure construction such as subway, tunnel (excavation box) or shield tunnel structure is becoming more diverse, and its demand is gradually increasing. However, for the concrete structures constructed underground, the water leakage is occurred due to the expansion joint and construction joint, or movement, uneven settlement, excessive load and vibration during application causing cracks. Many waterproofing method and materials are used in jobsites, but areas such as underground railroad and subway that has movement and vibration at all times, the ability of waterproofing layer is declined causing repetitive water leakage due to crack, erosion and separation, which is a vicious cycle. Therefore, this study evaluates the responsiveness to a movement for adhesive/flexible waterproofing material that can cope with the vibration and the movement of the structure. Also to recommend a waterproofing technology that can cope with structure movement through examples of actual jobsite applications such as subway and tunnel where there are constant movement and vibration.

  • In order to prevent the corrosion of component contacted primary water designed alloy 600 material in the nuclear power plant. But the primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) of alloy 600 and weld area occurs continuously due to the residual stress. The leakage accident resulted from PWSCC in the drain nozzle of the steam generator of domestic power plants. Heater sleeves of the pressurizer are welded with alloy 600 weld material and therefore exposed to the primary water environment. PWSCC occurred in heater sleeve material and weld area of many foreign power plants. The current issue of domestic nuclear power plants are consequently concentrated to PWSCC of similar material. In order to improve the detection and the sizing of the PWSCC in the welding sleeve of the pressurizer, the automatic UT system and multi-directions probe sets have been developed. The experimental studies have been performed using the mock-up block containing artificial reflectors(ID connected EDM notch) and semi-artificial cracks made from thermal fatigue. The automatic UT System is applied in the detection and the length sizing of the ID/OD on the tube and the J-groove weld area of the artificial reflectors and results of the detection and the sizing are compared respectively. Also, the developed automatic UT system is successfully accomplished to inspect the heater sleeve and the J-groove weld area on the pressurizer for the detection of PWSCC.

  • Cracks in concrete generally interconnect flow paths and increase concrete permeability. The increase in concrete permeability due to the progression of cracks allows more water or aggressive chemical ions to penetrate into concrete, facilitating deterioration. The goal of this research is to study the relationship between crack width and water permeability of cracked concrete. Tests have been carried out as a function of hydraulic pressure (0.1 $\sim$ 2 bar) and crack width (30 $\sim$ 100 ${\mu}m$). Splitting and reuniting method was used to manufacture cracked concrete specimens with controlled crack width. Crack widths are checked by using a microscope($\times$100). The results show a considerable increase of water transport with crack width and hydraulic pressure. When the crack width is smaller than 50${\mu}m$, the crack width has little effect on concrete permeability. Due to the autogenous healing, the water flow through the crack gradually reduces with time. When crack width is 100 ${\mu}m$ and hydraulic pressure increase from 0.1 bar to 0.25 bar, concrete permeability increases rapidly about 190 times according to the test results.
