Austenitic stainless steels and Ni-base alloys are widely used as structural materials for major components and piping system in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). These austenitic alloys are known to be susceptible to environmental assisted cracking (EAC), such as environmentally-assisted fatigue (EAF) and primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) during long-term exposure to PWR primary water environment. In this paper, the current understanding on the phenomena and mechanisms of these EAC are briefly introduced using experimental results and literature review. The mechanisms for EAF and PWSCC for austenitic stainless steels and Ni-base alloys are discussed. Currently, austenitic stainless steels are known to be more susceptible to EAF, while less susceptible to PWSCC than Ni-base alloys. The possible explanations to such behaviors are proposed and discussed in view of the role of hydrogen and internal oxidation.

Reactive metals like aluminum generate hydrogen gas when it reacts with water. Aluminum, despite its high chemical affinity with water, cannot continue the reaction due to the passive oxide layers formed on its surface. When the reaction is assisted by electrical energy dissipation in the form of discharge, the reaction is more likely to be sustained. In this report, some preliminary experimental results are presented regarding the hydrogen generation based on this scheme.

Sensitized STS 304 stainless steel crack growth rate(CGR) in high temperature water was investigated under trapezoidal wave loading test using fracture mechanics techniques. The CGR, due to stress corrosion cracking(SCC), were systematically measured as a function of the stress intensity factor and stress. holding time under trapezoidal wave loading. In high temperature water, CGR was enhanced by a synergistic effects in combination with an aggressive environment and mechanical damage. The CGR, $(da/dN)_{env}$ was basically described as a summation of the environmentally assisted crack growth rate $(da/dN)_{SCC}$, $(da/dN)_{CF}$ and fatigue crack growth rate in air $(da/dN)air,. The CGR, $(da/dN)_{env}$, increased linearly with increasing stress holding time. The CGR, $(da/dN)_{SCC}$ decreased linearly with increasing stress holding time. Fracture surface mode varied from trans-granular cracking to inter-granular cracking with increasing stress holding time.

Hydrophilic treatment of the packing materials in a cooling tower has been made by the ion assisted reaction (IAR) method to increase the wettability of the packing materials. The effects of hydrophilic treatment of packing materials on the performance of a cooling tower have been investigated in a wide range of operating parameters, such as water flow rate, air flow rate, and the water inlet temperature. A pilot cooling tower has been designed and built to model a counter-flow cooling tower. The results obtained indicate that the packing characteristic value with hydrophilic packing could be substantially increased by 6∼19.3% than that with conventional packing in the operating ranges considered. The correlations of the packing characteristic value as a function of water-to-air ratio are suggested for a counter-flow cooling tower with hydrophilic packing as well as with conventional packing.

Micro-hole drilling by EDM and production of fine rods for the tool electrode or other purpose have become very important in industry. This paper suggests a new method for production of very fine rods by ultrasonic-assisted chemical machining and describes the machining characteristics of micro-hole drilling by EDM. For fine rods, copper wires of initial diameter of 250.mum are used and successfully machined into a diameter of less than 30.mum with good repeatability. The ultrasonic agitation not only accelerated the material removal rate uniformly, but also produced smooth surfaces of fine rods. To drill the micro-hole, kerosene and pure water is used as a dielectric. From the experiment, water is superior to kerosene with respect to surface roughness of inlet and outlet of hole and machined surface as well as electrode wear. However, due to the electrochemical reaction of water, small pits are remained on the workpiece surface.

Vertically aligned arrays of mm-long multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on Si substrates have been synthesized by water-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The growth of CNTs was investigated by changing the experimental parameters such as growth temperature, growth time, gas composition, annealing time, catalyst thickness, and Al underlayer thickness. The 0.5-nm-thick Fe served as catalyst, underneath which Al was coated as a catalyst support as well as a diffusion barrier on the Si substrate. We grew CNTs by adding a little amount of water vapor to enhance the activity and the lifetime of the catalyst. Al was very good at producing the nm-size catalyst particles by preventing "Ostwald ripening". The Al underlayer was varied over the range of 15~40 nm in thickness. The optimum conditions for the synthesis parameters were as follows: pressure of 95 torr, growth temperature of $815^{\circ}C$, growth for 30 min, 60 sccm Ar + 60 sccm $H_2$ + 20 sccm $C_2H_2$. The water vapor also had a great effect on the growth of CNTs. CNTs grew 5.03 mm long for 30 min with the water vapor added while CNTs were 1.73 mm long without water vapor at the same condition. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the as-grown CNTs were of ~3 graphitic walls and ~6.6 nm in diameter.

A novel stick-shaped portable sensing device featuring a microhole array interface between the polyvinylchloride-2-nitrophenyloctylether (PVC-NPOE) gel and water phase was developed for in-situ sensing of perchlorate ions in real water samples. Perchlorate sensitive sensing responses were obtained based on measuring the current changes with respect to the assisted transfer reaction of perchlorate ions by a perchlorate selective ligand namely, bis(dibenzoylmethanato)Ni(II) (Ni(DBM)2) across the polarized microhole array interface. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the assisted transfer reaction of perchlorate ions by the $Ni(DBM)_2$ ligand when using the portable sensing device. The current response for the transfer of perchlorate anions by $Ni(DBM)_2$ across the micro-water/gel interface linearly increased as a function of the perchlorate ion concentration. The technique of differential pulse stripping voltammetry was also utilized to improve the sensitivity of the perchlorate anion detection down to 10 ppb. This was acquired by preconcentrating perchlorate anions in the gel layer by means of holding the ion transfer potential at 0 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) for 30 s followed by stripping the complexed perchlorate ion with the ligand. The effect of various potential interfering anions on the perchlorate sensor was also investigated and showed an excellent selectivity over $Br^-$, $NO_2{^-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $CO{_3}^{2^-}$, $CH_3COO^-$ and $SO{_4}^{2^-}$ ions. As a final demonstration, some regional water samples from the Sincheon river in Daegu city were analyzed and the data was verified with that of ion chromatography (IC) analysis from one of the Korean-certified water quality evaluation centers.
When rivers and lakes are contaminated with numerous contaminants, usually the contaminants are finally deposited on the sediments of the waterbody. Many clean up technologies have been developed for the contaminated sediments. Among several technologies dredging is one of the best methods because dredging removes all the contaminated sediments from the water and the contaminated sediments can be completely treated with physical and chemical methods. However the most worried phenomenon is suspension of fine particles during the dredging process. The suspended particle can release contaminants into water and resulted in spread of the contaminants and the increase of risk due to the resuspension of the precipitated contaminants such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Therefore the success of the dredging process depends on the prevention of resuspension of fine particles. Advanced dredging processes employ pumping the sediment with water onto a ship and release the turbid water pumped with sediment into waterbody after collection of sediment solids. Before release of the turbid water into lake or river, just a few minutes allowed to precipitate the suspended particle due to the limited area on a dredging ship. However the fine particle cannot be removed by the gravitational settling over a few minutes. Environmental technology such as coagulation and precipitation could be applied for the settling of fine particles. However, the process needs coagulants and big settling tanks. For the quick settling of the fine particles suspended during dredging process magnetic separation has been tested in current study. Magnetic force increased the settling velocity and the increased settling process can reduce the volume of settling tank usually located in a ship for dredging. The magnetic assisted settling also decreased the heavy metal release through the turbid water by precipitating highly contaminated particles with magnetic force.
A simple and efficient microwave-assisted extraction procedure was developed and optimized for the extraction of paclitaxel from the plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis. The biomass, immersed in a methanol-water mixture, was irradiated with microwaves in a closed-vessel system. The microwave-assisted extraction was compared with the existing conventional solvent extraction in terms of yield, extraction time, and solvent consumption. The use of microwave energy allows rapid recovery of paclitaxel from biomass and dramatically reduces extraction time and solvent usage compared to conventional solvent extraction. The paclitaxel was completely extracted from biomass by microwave-assisted extraction for 3 min at $50^{\circ}C$, for 6 min at $30^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Comparison of a microwave-assisted extraction with sonication extraction was performed for arsenic speciation in fish tissue with chromatographic separation and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection. The detection limits of arsenicals with ultrasonic nebulizerand cross-flow nebulizer were shown to be similar. The arsenicals investigated were arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenite [As(III)], dimethylarsine acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), arsenate [As(v)], and phenylarsonic acid (PAA). Quantitative extraction of arsenicals from dogfish muscle, DORM-2, standard reference material of NRCC (National Research Council of Canada) was achieved using 50% (v/v) methanol-water in both extraction methods. Extraction efficiency of arsenobetaine in both methods is greater than 82% with RSDs on replicates of less than 5%. The concentrations of AsB determined in extract of microwave assisted extraction and sonication methods were $14.18{\pm}0.42mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $13.54 {\pm}0.84mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. And the concentrations of DMA were $0.45{\pm}0.06mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $0.44{\pm}0.06mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively.
