  • The floating island was investigated in order to make a purification of lake water quality with the uptake of nutrients, the prevention of algae growth and the supply of habitat for aquatic plants. Although the concentrations of organics and nutrients inside facility were shown higher than outside, the quantitative analysis was not attainable. Nitrogen uptakes by Cattail, Phragmites japonica, Reed and Wild rice were shown 48.2, 98.0, 111.1 and $72.0g/m^2{\cdot}year$, respectively, and in the case of phosphorus they were 3.2, 8.3, 6.1 and $4.6g/m^2{\cdot}year$, respectively. Considering total floating areas of $2,560m^2$, the nitrogen uptake is totally estimated to $210.7kg/m^2{\cdot}year$ and $14.2kg/m^2{\cdot}year$ for the phosphorus uptake. In order to promote the spread of floating island, the selection of aquatic plants, the control of growth rate properly and the method of quantitative analysis for the purification of water quality and the application to the stream water should be thoroughly surveyed from all angles prior to the application.

  • Seven varieties of soybeans(Paldal, Danyeob, Jangbaek, Baegun, Jangyeob and 2 cultivars of Local 1 and Local 2) were investigated to compare the water uptake properties and volume changes during soaking in water. The hydration properties showed that the equilibrated weight increase ratio decreased as the soaking temperature raised to higher than $40^{\circ}C$, while the initial water uptake rate increased upto $80^{\circ}C$. The increase in hydration showed a linear relationship with the square root of the soaking time at $4^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. Local 1 was the highest in water uptake rate constant while Local 2 was the lowest. The activation energy calculated was in the range of $3,246{\sim}4,694\;cal/mole$. The Jangbaek and Local 1 were the highest and the Paldal was the lowest in the rate of volume increase. The activation energy for volume increase was in the range of $3,310{\sim}4,190\;cal/mole$. The z-values calculated from volume change was a little higher than those obtained from weight change.

  • Physicochemical properties and water uptake rate of pigmented rice were determined. The median and mean particle sizes of pigmented rice flour were 15.18 and $38.53\;{\mu}m$, whereas brown rice flour were 11.46 and $33.41\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Water-binding capacity, swelling power, and solubility of pigmented rice flour were higher than those of brown rice flour. X-ray diffraction patterns showed traditional A type of cereals. Moisture gain of pigmented rice kernels increased continuously up to 60 min at soaking temperature $(20{\sim}25^{\circ}C)$. Water uptake rate constants of pigmented rice during soaking at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ also increased.

  • The release of heparin from monolithic devices composed of different ratios of polyethylene oxide(PEO MW 20,000) and polydimethylsiloxane was investigated. Water soluble PEO plended into the polydimethylsiloxane proved a controlled release of heparin. The release rate of heparin could be controlled by varying the content of PEO and loading dose of heparin. The release rate of heparin from the devices increased as the content of PEO and heparin in the devices increased. The release rate of heparin from devices were related to nature of solute(ionic strength) and temperature. The release mechanism may be associated with the creation of pore or domine through the devices the water-uptake and the change in the physical structure of the polydimethysiloxane network.

  • Nanotechnology has become one of the fastest developing technologies and recently applied to a variety of industries. Thus, increasing number of nano materials including various nanoparticles would be discharged into wastewater and consequently entering a biological wastewater treatment process. However, the impact of the nano particles on biological wastewater treatment has not been estimated intensively. In this research, we investigated the effect of silica nanoparticle on the oxygen uptake rates (OURs) of activated sludge used in a conventional wastewater treatment process. The inhibition (%) values were estimated from the results of OURs experiments for the silica nanoparticles with various sizes of 10-15, 45-50, and 70-100 nm and concentrations of 50, 250, and 500 ppm. As results, the inhibition value was increased as the size of silica nano particles decreased and the injected concentration increased. The maximum inhibition value was investigated as 37.4 % for the silica nanoparticles with the size of 45-50 nm and concentration of 50 ppm. Additionally, the effect of size and concentration on the inhibition should be considered cautiously in case that the aggregation of particles occurred seriously so that the size of individual particles was increased in aquatic solution.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate water uptake, electrical conductivity, germination percentage, seedling growth, and seedling establishment rate in direct seeding cultivation of rice. The rice seeds of six japonica type varieties were coated with 12 kinds of polymers in a standard concentration of 0.2% using seed coating machine. The water absorption of the polymer-coated seeds under saturation conditions was not different among varieties, and was the highest in kulcel, maltrin, and waterlock on the polymer-coated seeds. The electrical conductivity with waterlock (55.0 $\mu scm^{-1}g^{-1}$) was higher than the control plot (45.6 $\mu scm^{-1}g^{-1}$) and other treatments. The germination of the polymer-coated seeds was 95.9% at control plot, 92.7% at low temperature and 35.7% at high temperature. The total dry weight of seed decreased in the order of low temperature, control plot, and high temperature, and was effective in pvp (polyvinyl pyrrolidone), opadry, and sacrust. The seedling establishment rate in direct seeding cultivation ranged from 74.9 to 81.0% in flooded paddy surface, and ranged from 64.7 to 76.6% in dry paddy. In both cases, it decreased in the order of early, medium and medium-late varieties, but was enhanced in daran 8600, sepirect, and sacrust. According to this study the recommended polymers for direct seeding cultivation of rice are daran 8600, sepirect, and sacrust.

  • Water uptake rates of barley (pressed, cutted and pearled) at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ were determined by measuring the weight gain during soaking. Pressed barley absorbed water at the fastest rate, whereas pearled barley at the slowest rate. The former was the most temperature dependent during hydration. Degree of gelatinization, determined by X-ray diffractometry, during cooking at $100^{\circ}C$ indicated that the pressed barley cooked 1.4- and 2-times faster than Gutted and pearled barley, respectively.

  • A radiotracer study was conducted to evaluate the influence of body size and temperature on the uptake rates of Cd, Se and Zn in the California mussel, Mytilus californianus. Uptake rates of Cd, Se and Zn were determined simultaneously with clearance of the mussels with 3 different size classes (0.07, 0.24 and 0.73 g flesh dry weight $individual^{-1})$ and at 4 different temperatures (3, 8, 13 and $21^\circ{C})$. The weight-specific uptake rates of 3 elements significantly decreased with body size, but increased with temperature. Simultaneously measured clearance rates of mussels were closely associated with metal uptake rates. The significant association of clearance rates and metal uptake rates of mussels emphasizes the importance of functional role of water pumping activity in the metal uptake process in filter-feeding organisms.

  • Bench scale experiments were carried out with two biological nutrient removal(BNR) units, A/O and $A^2O$ processes, to investigate the behavior of phosphorus in the system and to compare the characteristics of phosphorus removal in two BNR processes. To achieve this goal, COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios of the influent was varied in the range of 23~64 and 5~24, respectively. In A/O process, influent COD/T-P ratio should be kept higher than 44mg/L to meet the final effluent T-P concentration lower than 1mg/L and in $A^2/O$ process, influent COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios higher than 56 and 10, respectively, were required for good phosphorus release and uptake with no influence of nitrate nitrogen in return sludge. At this conditions, the rate of phosphorus release in the anaerobic basin should be kept higher than 0.1 kg S-P/kg MLVSS d In A/O process, the phosphorus content of anaerobic and aerobic sludges was increased as SRT of total system was becoming longer resulting in decreasing the difference of phosphorus content between two sludges while phosphorus release in anaerobic basin and phosphorus uptake in aerobic basin was not incident. In $A^2/O$ process, the phosphorus content of anaerobic and aerobic sludges were not increased with higher SRT of total system due to the relatively high nitrate concentration in return sludge. However, the difference of phosphorus content between anaerobic and aerobic sludges was incident when phosphorus release and uptake was observed.

  • Laboratory radiotracer experiments were conducted to determine assimilation efficiencies (AE) from ingested algal food and oxic sediment particles, uptake rates from the dissolved phase, and the efflux rates of Cd, Cr and Zn in the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea. Among three elements, AE from both algal and sediment food was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr. The AEs of tested elements from algal food (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) were consistently higher than those from sediments at a given salinity and temperature. The influence of salinity (0, 4 and 8 psu) and temperature (5, 13 and $21^{\circ}C$) on the metal AEs was not evident for most tested elements, except Cd AEs from sediment. The rate constant of metal uptake from the dissolved phase $(k_u)$ was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr in freshwater media. However, in saline water, the $(k_u)$ of Zn were greater than those of Cd. The influx rate of all tested metals increased with temperature. The efflux rate constant was greatest for Cr $(0.02\;d^{-1})$, followed by Zn $(0.010{\sim}0.017\;d^{-1})$ and $Cd\;(0.006\;d^{-1})$. The efflux rate constant for Zn in clam tissues depurated in 0 psu $(0.017\;d^{-1})$ was faster than that in 8 psu $(0.010\;d^{-1})$. Overall results showed that the variation of salinity and temperature in estuarine systems can considerably influence the metal bioaccumulation potential in the estuarine clam C. fluminea. The relatively high Cd accumulation capacity of C. fluminea characterized by the high AE, high dissolved influx rate and low efflux rate, suggested that this clam species can be used as an efficient biomonitor for the Cd contamination in freshwater and estuarine environments.
