  • Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), responsible for earthy or musty smell, are a major concern for safe drinking water supplies. This study investigated the effects of environmental factors on odorous compound production and cell growth in cyanobacterial strains. Anabaena sp. FACHB-1384, a 2-MIB producer, was sensitive to low temperature (<$20^{\circ}C$). However, geosmin producers, Anabaena sp. Chusori and Anabaena sp. NIER, were sensitive to high light intensity (>$100{\mu}mol/m^2/sec$), but not to low temperature. Geosmin concentrations increased under higher nitrate concentrations, being linearly proportional to cell density. A P-limited chemostat showed that P-stress decreased the geosmin productivity and extracellular geosmin amount per cell in Anabaena sp. NIER. However, only 2-MIB productivity was reduced in Planktothrix sp. FACHB-1374 under P-limitation. The extracellular 2-MIB amount per cell remained constant at all dilution rates. In conclusion, high light intensity and P-stress can contribute to the lower incidence of geosmin, whereas 2-MIB reduction could be attainable at a lower temperature.

  • A printed circuit steam generator (PCSG) is being considered as the component for pressurized water reactor (PWR) type small modular reactor (SMR) that can further reduce the physical size of the system. Since a steam generator in many PWR-type SMR generates superheated steam, it is expected that dryout front oscillation can potentially cause thermal fatigue failure due to cyclic thermal stresses induced by the transition in boiling regimes between convective evaporation and film boiling. To investigate the fatigue issue of a PCSG, a reference PCSG is designed in this study first using an in-house PCSG design tool. For the stress analysis, a finite element method analysis model is developed to obtain the temperature and stress fields of the designed PCSG. Fatigue estimation is performed based on ASME Boiler and pressure vessel code to identify the major parameters influencing the fatigue life time originating from the dryout front oscillation. As a result of this study, the limit on the temperature difference between the hot side and cold side fluids is obtained. Moreover, it is found that the heat transfer coefficient of convective evaporation and film boiling regimes play an essential role in the fatigue life cycle as well as the temperature difference.

  • Frost heaving and thawing settlement cause unexpected stress around buried pipelines, which results in deformation and permanent demage. A large scale laboratory test has been performed to observe deformation, stress, and temperature of a buried pipe during atmospheric temperature changes. From the experimental results, the stress concentrated around the buried pipe is inevitable and deformation is caused by the frost heaving. Even though backfill materials are sandy soils which are normally assumed to be non frost susceptible, it is revealed that frost demage can happen due to drainage condition, the level of ground water table, and water content.

  • Quartz is the most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust. Therefore, understanding of quartz dissolution and precipitation is very important to know about weathering processes and interactions between rocks and water in hydrothermal and metamorphic environments. This paper presents a basic review on the research about quartz dissolution mechanism under various physico-chemical conditions. We rearranged the relationship between each physico-chemical factor and dissolution mechanism from the results of previous researchers in this paper. From this result, we understood that quartz dissolution and precipitation are affected by each factor such as temperature, pH, and applied stress conditions at contact point. In particular, we recognized that the high pH and temperature conditions have different anion concentrations on mineral's surface. As a result, high pH and temperature conditions have a better effect than applied stress condition to the quartz dissolution mechanism.

  • Variations in water temperature are known to affect almost every part of fish physiology. The rise in water temperature due to climate change can physically damage fish. This study was conducted to evaluate the health status of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) at high water temperature (20℃) than the optimum water temperature (15℃). Liver tissue exerts important metabolic functions in thermal adaptation. Therefore, liver tissue was used in this study. The evaluation method is to develop the biomarker gene using NGS RNAseq analysis and to examine the expression pattern using RT-qPCR analysis. The NGS RNAseq analysis revealed 1,366 differentially expressed genes, among which 880 genes were increase expressed and 486 genes were decrease expressed. The biomarker genes are such as heat shock protein 90 alpha (Hsp90α), heat shock protein 90 beta (Hsp90β) and cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A). The selected genes are sensitive to changes in water temperature through NGS RNAseq analysis. Expression patterns of these genes through RT-qPCR were similar to those of NGS RNAseq analysis. The results of this study can be applied to other fish species and it is considered to be useful industrially.

  • In this paper, hydraulic & thermal developing and fully developed laminar forced convection flow of a water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluid in a circular horizontal tube with uniform heat flux at the wall, are investigated numerically. A single phase model employed with temperature independent properties. The thermal entrance length is presented in this paper. The variations of the convective heat transfer coefficient and shear stress are shown in the entrance region and fully developed region along different nanoparticles concentration and Reynolds numbers. Convective heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids is larger than that of the base fluid. It is shown that heat transfer is enhanced and shear stress is increased as the particle volume concentration increases. The heat transfer improves, as Reynolds number increases.

  • Run-Out-Table is the region between EDT and CT. Hot killed strip is cooled by air and water in ROT. In this procedure, phase transformation and shape deformation occur due to temperature drop. Because of un-ideal cooling condition, deformation of strip and non-uniform phase distribution come into existence. This phenomenon affects the strip property and lead th the existence of residual stress. And it exerts effects on the Coiling process, Coil Cooling process, and Un-coiling process. Through these process, the residual stresses of strip are more larger and unbalance of these stresses become more severe. Finite element (FE) based models for the analysises of non-steady state heat transfer and elastoplastic deformation are described in this investigation. The analysises of thermodynamics and phase transformation kinetics are suggested also. Using the ROT simulation result coiling process and coil cooling process simulations are carried out.

  • This paper presents the effects of accumulation of surface charges on hydrophobic level and the changes of surface potential decay with various artificial environment treatments on high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber used for outdoor insulating material. For this study, the charging apparatus by corona discharge, in which grid electrode was installed between the main corona and ground electrode, was used. From this study, it was found that the accumulation of surface charges above a critical surface potential on silicone insulating materials could lead to the temporary loss of surface hydrophobicity. In addition, corona stress and water absorption stress increase the decay rate of surface charges of HTV silicone rubber, while ultraviolet (UV) stress causes longer decay time. We could conclude that the effects of surface charges on hydrophobicity level and the changes of surface state by various artificial treatments were found through a trend of surface potential decay.

  • The environmental pollutions were a serious problem in Korea recently. So many researcher have studied the effect of environmental pollution on plants and agro-ecosystem, but the basic mechanisms of environmental stresses were various. One of the important mechanisms was oxidative stress caused by active toxic oxygen. The toxic oxygen was generated by several stresses, abnormal temperature, many xenobiotics, air pollutants, water stress, fugal toxin, etc. In the species of toxic oxygen which is primary inducer of oxidative stresses, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen were representative species. The scavenging systems were divided into two groups. One was nonenzymatic system and the other enzymatic system. Antioxidants such as glutathione, ascorbic acid, and carotenoid, have the primary function in defense mechanisms. Enzymatic system divided into two groups; First, direct interaction with toxic oxygen(eg. superoxide dismutase). Second, participation in redox reaction to maintain the active antioxidant levels(eg. glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase, etc.).

  • The rheological properties of concentrated Kochujang (Korean red pepper paste)-water suspensions were investigated. The rheological behavior of Kochujang-water suspension was illustrated by Herschel-Bulkley equation. All Kochujang-water suspensions with 12.5-100% of water addition showed pseudoplasticity in yield stress at the shear rate range of $0.25-179.20sec^{-1}$., but at the shear rate above $5.16 sec^{-1}$, more shear thinning behavior was observed with increasing shear rate. Also, pseudoplasticity of the suspension became weak by increasing water addition and decreasing temperature, The temperature dependence of consistency index on Kochujang-suspension was very low and the values of consistency index was lowered by increasing solid contents, but as heating, the values of that was increased. It was suggested that the main components responsible for rheological behavior of the suspensions at high temperature might be undigested starch or protein in Kochujang. Also, the changes of rheological behavior with vinegar addtion was only due to dilution effect.
