The use of river water as a heat source of a heat pump has the advantage in the performance compared to the use of atmospheric air because the temperature variation of river water over the year is relatively small. In this study, the performance of the heat pump system using river water as a heat source was numerically investigated. A simulation model for the 2-stage compression heat pump system was developed with each component model composed of compressors, heat exchangers, a flash tank and electronic expansion devices. The peformance of the heat pump system using river water was improved by $50\%$ compared to that using atmospheric air in winter conditions.
The purpose of this study is to present the simulation results and an overview of the performance assessment of the Ground-Source Heat Pump(GSHF) system. The calculation was performed for two design factors: the spacing between boreholes and the depth of the vertical ground heat exchangers. And the simulation was carried out using the thermal simulation code TRNSYS with new model of water to water heat pump developed by this study. As a result, it was anticipated that the yearly mean COPs of heat pump for heating and cooling are about 3.7 and 5.8 respectively and the heat pump can supply 100% of heating and cooling load all the year around.

In order to heat greenhouse nearby river channel, riverbank filtration water source heat pump was developed for getting plenty of heat flux from geothermal energy. Recharging well, thermal storage tank with separating insulation plate and filtering tank for eliminating iron, manganese were mainly developed for making the coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump higher. Heating system using riverbank filtration water source heat pump was installed at a paprika greenhouse in the Jinju region where a single fold of vinyl cover and 2 layers of horizontal thermal curtain were installed as a part of temperature keeping and heat insulation with a greenhouse area of 3,185 $m^2$. 320,000 kcal/h was supplied for performing a site application tests. A greenhouse heating test was performed from Feb. 1, 2011 to Apr. 30, 2011. As the result of that, COPh of the heat pump was measured in the range of 4.0~4.5, while COPS of the system was represented as 2.9~3.3. COP measured of the heat pump was very good and well responded to indoor heating temperature of the environment control system of a greenhouse.
A water-source heat pump system has been developed for cooling and heating of a green house on the waterfront in Jinju. In order to supply a heat source/sink of water in alluvium aquifer to the heat pump system, the riverbank filtration facility (two pumping wells and one recharge well) for water intake and injection has been constructed. To pump and recharge water sufficiently, the geometric design such as depth and diameter for the wells have been completed, and details of the well such as slot size and length of the screen and filter pack size have been designed based on the practical and theoretical design method including D30 technique. For the investigation of the hydrogeological characteristics, step-drawdown test, long-term pumping test, and recovery test have been carried out for two developed pumping wells. Step-drawdown test has been performed on 4 step flowrates of 150, 300, 450, $600m^3$/day for 1 hour, and long-term pumping test on flowrate of $500m^3$/day for 24 hours, and recovery test for 6 hours. Since the underground water filtrated by riverbank is flowing smoothly into the well, the water level goes down slightly for the long-term test. Consequently, the stable pumping flowrate for two pumping well has been predicted at least over $1,647m^3$/day which is larger than the flowrate of $1,000m^3$/day for a 60 RT heat pump system.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the refrigerant charge amount on the performance of a water-to-water ground source heat pump with a variation of compressor speed and the secondary fluid flow rate. The water-to-water ground source heat pump was tested by varying refrigerant charge amount from -40% to 20% of full charge. Compressor speed was changed from 30 Hz to 75 Hz and the secondary fluid flow rate was adjusted from 6 LPM to 14 LPM. For all test conditions, EWTs of an indoor heat exchanger and an outdoor heat exchanger were maintained at standard conditions of ISO 13256-2. The slope of the COP with the variation of charge amount is much steeper at undercharged conditions than that at overcharged conditions. For all compressor speed, the variation of the system performance according to charge amounts showed the similar trends. However, the optimum charge amount of the system increased a little with an increment of compressor speed. When the secondary fluid flow rate decreased, the system was optimized at higher refrigerant charge amount conditions.
The treated sewage temperature is about $5^{\circ}C$ lower in summer and $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ higher in winter than ambient air. It can be used heat pump heat source and is good heat source on high performance of heat pump. In this study, to develop 100RT 2-stage compression heat pump use treated sewage water heat source and system applies to sewage disposal plant. Although heat pump is better performance, the large temperature difference between load and source makes the performance degradation of a heat pump. To solve this problem screw 2-stage compression is considered. The experiment was focused on the system operating performance variations over supply water and treated sewage water a temperature in the field. The results show that system of heating performance is higher then general heat pump and is enough to supply a hot water of $70^{\circ}C$.
This paper presents the heating performance analysis results of a ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system using hybrid ground heat exchanger (HGHE). In this paper, the HGHE refers to the ground heat exchanger (GHE) using both a surface water heat exchanger (SWHE) and a vertical GHE. In order to evaluate the system performance, we installed monitoring sensors for measuring temperatures and power consumption, and then measured operation data with 4 different load burdened ratios of the HGHE. During the entire measurement period, the average heating capacity of the heat pump was 37.3 kW. In addition, the compressor of the heat pump consumed 9.4 kW of power, while the circulating pump of the HGHE used 6.7 kW of power. Therefore, the average heating coefficient of performance (COP) for the heat pump unit was 4.0, while the system including the circulating pump was 2.7. Finally, the parallel use of SWHE and VGHE was beneficial to the system performance; however, further researches are needed to optimize the design data for various load ratios of the HGHE.
Performance of the raw water-source heat pump system with a thermal storage tank has been analyzed in winter season. The raw water is transferred through the multi-regional water supply system from Han river. Raw water is large temperature difference resource compared with groundwater. Although the raw water temperature drops to $0.6^{\circ}C$ due to the heavy snowfall and the severe cold in late January and early February, 2010, the system has been normally operated without any trouble this winter. The unit COP and system COP considered all pump power consumption were estimated based on the second-by-second data of the all sensors. The monthly averaged unit COP and system COP are 3.37 and 2.76 respectively with $1.4^{\circ}C$ of raw water in January, 3.55 and 2.89 with $1.6^{\circ}C$ raw water in February, 3.82 and 3.15 with $5.4^{\circ}C$ raw water in March. The performance of the system are increased with raw water temperature, and the COPs are higher than the water-to-air heat pump system using relatively high temperature raw water from Daecheong reservoir because the water-to-water system was operated on the full load condition and was stopped when the thermal storage tank was full of the high temperature water.
This study analyzed the feasibility of the air source heat pump in residential buildings based on operational performance and carbon emissions. The operational performance and carbon emissions were compared between a gas boiler and an air source heat pump by calculating the annual heating and hot water load based on the 21A and 36A models for actual residential buildings. For the operational performance of the air source heat pump, the lowest (2.3) and highest COP (5.9) were attained during the winter and summer seasons, respectively. The carbon emissions depend on the amount of energy consumed during operations. An air source heat pump consumed 65.10% and 65.4% less energy per year in the 21A and 36A models, respectively compared to the existing gas boiler. Consequently, for air source heat pump carbon emissions were also reduced by 13.3% and 15.1% per year for the 21A and 36A models, respectively. It shows the effectiveness of applying an air source heat pump compared to an existing gas boiler.
