Falling film rectification involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer between vapor and solution film. In the present work, the adiabatic rectification process of ammonia-water vapor by the falling solution film on the vertical plate was investigated. The continuity momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and the vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically, The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the mass transfer rate. The effects of Reynolds number and ammonia concentration of solution and vapor mixture, rectifier length, and the enhancement of mass transfer coefficient in each phases were investigated. The stripping of water in vapor mixture occurred near the entrance of ammonia solution, which imposed the proper size of an adiabatic rectifier. Rectifier efficiency increased as film Reynolds number increased and as vapor mixture Reynolds number decreased. The improvement of rectifier efficiency was significant with the enhancement of mass transfer coefficient in falling film.
Experiments were carried out to find out the optimum water potential, temperature, and duration for the priming of rice seeds, Oryza sativa L. (cv. Ilpumbyeo) for better germination at sub-optimal temperatures. Seeds were primed in 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, and -1.0 MPa PEG (polyethylene glycol) solutions at $25^{\circ}C$. The optimum water potential for seed priming, the highest water potential at which rice seeds did not germinate, was -0.6 MPa. To find out optimum priming temperature and duration rice seeds were primed in -0.6 MPa PEG solution and 0 MPa (water as a control) for various durations at 15 and $25^{\circ}C$ and the seeds were germinated at 17, 20, and $25^{\circ}C$. Considering germination rate and speed, the optimum priming time in water (0 MPa) was 4 days at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 1 day at $25^{\circ}C$, while 4 days was the optimum priming time in a -0.6 MPa PEG solution, regardless of the priming temperature. Priming reduced the actual time of germination, especially at sub-optimal temperatures. Priming did not affect germination rate in -0.6 MPa PEG solution at 15$^{\circ}C$, but overpriming reduced the final germination rate in water at 15$^{\circ}C$ and in -0.6 PEG solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Total sugars and $\alpha$-amylase activity induced during the seed priming were negatively correlated with the final germination rate and there was no noted relationship with the speed or uniformity of germination.

Aluminum tri-butoxide was mixed with the water/ethanol solution and then chloroplatinic acid was added to the solution. The solution was dried at $100^{\circ}C$ for 15hrs to remove the solvent and water then it was calcined at $500^{\circ}C$. The catalyst was activated with a gas mixture. During the activation, the temperature was increased from $150^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. The necessary amount of urea was dissolved in 50mL water and injected. Aqueous urea solution was then mixed with the feed gas stream. At low temperatures, nitrogen containing compounds of urea decomposition are used as reductants in the reducton of $NO_X$. However at high temperatures the nitrogen containing compounds are oxidized to NO and $NO_2$ by oxygen instead of being used in the reduction. The activity of the catalyst was dependent on urea concentration in the feed stream when there was not adequate water vapor in the feed. The maximum conversion was shifted from $250^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$ when water concentration was increased from 2 to 17%. It seems that the maximum temperature shifts to lower temperatures because the hydrolysis rate of HNCO increases with water, resulting in higher amounts of $NH_3$.
The glass electrode was empirically calibrated in methanol-and 2-propanol-water mixed solvents, by means of which the pH-meter reading could be converted to stoichiometric hydrogen ion concentration. The thermodynamic dissociation constants of hydrogen cupferrate in methanol-and 2-propanol-water solution were potentiometrically determined with the changes in composition of organic solvents at 0.01 and 0.05 of the ionic strength and 25$^{\circ}C$. The empirical formula of the constants with mole fraction (n) of the organic solvent are as follow: methanol-water solution $pK_a$= 2.24n + 4.29 at ${\mu}$ = 0.01 n = 0.0476∼0.642 $pK_a$ = 2.35n + 4.38 at ${\mu}$ = 0.05 n= 0.0446~0.642 2-propanol-water solution $pK_a$= 5.50n + 4.48 at ${\mu}$ = 0.05 n = 0.0253~0.259 The relationships between $pK_a$ of acetic acid, propionic acid and HCup and dielectric constant of some mixed solvents were discussed. It would be considered that the factors effecting $pK_a$ value of weak acid in mixed-solvent are not only dielectric constants but acid-base character and solvation effect of the solvent, etc.
The preconcentration and determination of trace Cd(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) in water samples were studied by the precipitate flotation using La(OH)3 as a coprecipitant. The analytes were quantitatively coprecipitated by adding 3.0 mL of 0.1 M La(Ⅲ) solution in a 1,000 mL water sample and adjusting the pH to 9.5 with NaOH solution. After the addition of the 1:8 mixed surfactant solution of each 0.1% sodium oleate and sodium lauryl sulfate, the solution was stirred with a magnetic stirrer for 10 minutes. The precipitates were floated to the surface by bubbling with nitrogen gas and collected in a small sampling bottle. The precipitates were dissolved in nitric acid and then the solutions were diluted to 25.00 mL with a deionized water. The analytes were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. This procedure was applied to the waste water analysis. This technique was simple, convenient and especially rapid for the analysis of a large volume of sample. And also, from the recoveries of better than 92% which were obtained from real samples, this method could be judged to be applicable to the preconcentration and quantitative determination of trace elements in water samples.
This study is to investigate the effects of the draw solution concentration on forward osmosis desalination performance using blended fertilizer as draw solution. As the concentration of blended fertilizer solution (draw solution) increased, the water permeate flux increased nearly linearly, but PR (performance ratio) was reduced. Using sea water and deionized water as the feed solution, respectively, at the blended fertilizer solution of 600 g/L $H_2O$, the PR obtained were 5.39 and 6.50, respectively. And as the concentration of blended fertilizer solution increased, the reverse solute flux for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) increased nearly linearly, but specific reverse solute flux for them was reduced. The reverse solute flux and specific reverse solute flux became higher in the order of N > K > P.
In this paper, a microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) for detecting the concentration of an ethanol-water solution in a microliter volume is proposed. A rectangular slot was added at the radiating edge of the patch to increase the sensitivity to the relative permittivity change. To improve a low input resistance caused by placing an ethanol-water solution, which is a polar liquid with high dielectric constant and high loss tangent, on the patch, a quarter-wave impedance transformer was added between the 50-ohm feedline and the patch, and the MPSA was fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate. A cylindrical container was made of acryl, and 15 microliters of the ethanol-water solution was tested from 0% to 100% of ethanol concentration at 20% intervals. Experiment results show that the resonant frequency increased from 1.947 GHz to 2.509 GHz when the ethanol concentration of the ethanol-water solution was increased from 0% to 100%, demonstrating the performance as a concentration detecting sensor.

A mathematical model for long-rage water supply planning was formulated as a dynamic plant location problem with network arc capacity expansion, and illustative example was presented. The proposed solution procedure identifies economical construction timings of surface water supply facilities and water conveyence systems and the best water supply operating patterns as well. In this study, we present a heuristic solution procedure using Simulated annealing Method in conjunction with Bertsekas & Tseng's RELAXT-II for the 0-1 integer network problem.
The three-dimensional flow analysis using the finite volume method is presented to compare the steady flow characteristics of blood with those of blood substitutes such as water and aqueous polymer solution in an idealized double branching model. The model is used to simlllate the region of the abdominal aorta near the celiac and superior mesenteric branches. Apparent viscosities of blood and the aqueous Separan solution are represented as a function of shear rate by the Carreau model, Water and aqueoiu Separan AP-273 500wppm solution are frequently used as blood substitutes in vitro experiments. Water is a typical Newtonian fluid and blood and Separan solution are non-Newtonian fluids. Flow phenomena such as velocity distribution, pressure variation and wall shear stress distribution of water, blood and polymer solution are quite different due to differences of the rheological characteristics of fluids. Flow phenomena of polymer solution are qualitatively similar to those of blood but the phenomena of water are quite different from those of blood and polymer solution. It is recommended that a lion-Newtonian fluid which exhibits very similar rheological behavior to blood be used in vitro experiments. A non-Newtonian fluid whose rheological characteristics are very similar to those of blood should be used to obtain the meaninylll hemodynamic data for blood flow in vitro experiment and by numerical analysis
Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative, halophilic, oxidase-positive, lactose-positive, motile, rod shaped bacterium that has been associated with primary septicemia and wound infection. Elucidating the growth and survival of V. vulnificus in ecological conditions is of great importance to develop sanitary measure against this microorganism. Thus we simulated the ecological conditions and evaluated the effect. About $10^5\;CFU/ml$ of V. vulnificus was inoculated to fresh water, brackish water $(1\%\;NaCl)$, sea water $(3\%\;NaCl)$, and bottom deposit solution. The same concentration of V. vulnificus was also inoculated to distilled water, $1\%\;NaCl$ solution and $3\%\;NaCl$ solution as controls. These were stored at 4, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively and were used to assess the effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of V. vulnificus. In fresh water V. vulnificus could not survive regardless of storage temperature. In case of brackish water and sea water survival time of V. vulnificus was the longest at $25^{\circ}C$, and the number of V. vulnificus was decreased most rapidly at $4^{\circ}C$. V. vulnificus survived longer in brackish water than in any other conditions. In bottom deposit solution containing brackish water, the survival time of V. vulnificus was longer and the rate of decline was slower than that in brackish water. These results indicate that both biological and physicochemical factors such as temperature and salinity could affect survival of V. vulnificus. V. vulnificus, damaged in normal fresh water, did not grow on TCBS agar of selective plating medium but grew on BHI agar plate; However, V. vulnificus was recovered by addition of salt and nutrient materials.
