Method of besoil analysis were difficult to be applied universally since the use and the source material of bedsoils are diverse from country to country. Korean Standard Methods for Bedsoil Analysis was developed to measure the particle and bulk density. Fifty-three samples for horticultural bedsoil and nine samples for paddy rice bedsoil in the current market were collected. Particle density was measured by electrical pyconometer with He gas, and bulk density by the sandbox method, free fall method, plunger compaction method, free fall and plunger method, and sample weight compaction method. While the use of glass pycnometer which measures particle density to fill blank space with water was inappropriate due to floating organic and calcined inorganic materials in the water, the electrical pycnometer with gas type was suitable considering speed and accuracy. For bulk density, the sandbox method recommended as European Standard Method was more reasonable in principle than other methods. However, this method requires expensive apparatus and intricate process. Plunger compaction method was proposed as standard method, since it had higher consistence with the sandbox method than other methods, as well as an advantage of easy and prompt measurement. Particle density of bedsoil ranged $1.48{\sim}2.67Mg\;m^{-3}$(mean $1.93Mg\;m^{-3}$) for horticultural bedsoil and $2.33{\sim}2.67Mg\;m^{-3}$ (mean $2.43Mg\;m^{-3}$) for paddy rice bedsoil by the electrical pycnometer with He gas. Bulk density of bedsoil ranged $0.11{\sim}0.40Mg\;m^{-3}$ (mean $0.22Mg\;m^{-3}$) for horticultural bedsoil and $0.84{\sim}1.26Mg\;m^{-3}$(mean $1.01Mg\;m^{-3}$) for paddy rice bedsoil by plunger compaction method.

We have obtained a topographical image nondestructively for a Cu thin film in liquid using a near-field scanning microwave microscope (NSMM), its operating frequency was 3.5 to 5.5 GHz. We have kept a distance of 10 nm between tip and sample using a quartz tuning fork shear force feedback system. As an end of tip was attached to one prong of the quartz tuning fork has a length of 2 mm, the only tip of tuning fork was immersed in water tank. A loss cause by evaporation in water tank is regulated with actuator was connected to a supplementary tank. Moreover, using a revise program of LabView, we could increase the accuracy of a measurement in liquid.
In the Kimchi manufacturing industry, the process of brining baechu produces a vast amount of high salinity waste water. To study if this brine can be recycled, the quality characteristics of Kimchi salted by waste brine(F), which was used five times successively, was compared with those salted using water after recycling filtration through sand (F1) and activated carbon (F2) columns. No significant difference in the salinity and soluble solid contents, during fermentation at 10 was observed among the samples, but the salinity and soluble solid contents of the F-sample were slightly higher than in the control. The F1 and control Kimchi showed similar pHs and titratable acidities, while the F-Kimchi had a lower pH and a higher acidity during fermentation. The numbers of total viable cells were highest in the F, and lowest in the F2-Kimchi, while the counts of lactic acid bacteria were lowest in the F-Kimchi. The sensory tests for appearance, odor, taste and overall acceptance showed that the F-Kimchi was the least desirable, the F2-Kimchi had lower sour odor and taste, and a higher toughness, than the others. The F1- and control Kimchi had similar sensory grades for appearance, odor, and tastes, and there were no significant difference in the overall acceptance, showing the possibility of recycling wastewaters as brine for the production of baechu Kimchi.

As the consumption of wheat has increased recently, the number of people who have digestive problems resulting from gluten in wheat has also increased. Teff has an attractive nutritional profile, as it not only gluten-free but also high in dietary fiber, protein, iron, and calcium. Seven samples were prepared for this study. The quality characteristics of gluten-free noodles were evaluated based on pH, salinity, water absorption, turbidity, color, texture properties, tensile strength, and SEM. The pH value was the highest in TF100 with a pH of 6.66 and the lowest in the control with a pH of 6.42. Salinity showed no significant difference among all samples, and it ranged from 0.02~0.04% (p<0.05). Water absorption was the highest in TFX with a value of 66.11%, and the lowest in the control with a value of 44.81%. Turbidity showed no significant difference among all samples, and it ranged from 0.14~0.21 O.D. (p<0.05). While the lightness and yellowness values decreased with an increase in teff flour content, the redness value tended to decrease. The color difference value was the highest in the sample group without gluten. Based on the texture profile analysis, the hardness was highest in the control with a value of 46.74 N and lowest in TF100 with a value of 18.34 N. The springiness showed no significant difference among all samples. The cohesiveness was highest in the control with a value of 0.92 N. The chewiness decreased with an increase in teff flour content. Although the control with gluten had the highest tensile strength at $3.42kg/cm^2$, TFX had considerable tensile strength at $2.30kg/cm^2$. This study demonstrated the processability of gluten-free noodles using teff flour.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of essential oils and ethanolic extracts of approximately 650 plant species on acetylcholine esterase (AChE) enzyme activity using Ellman's colorimetric method in 96-well microplates. The results showed that the ethanolic extracts from twig of Sophora subprostrata, twig of Phellodendron amurense, seed of Corylopsis coreana, and essential oil (EO) from Citrus paradisi, Cupressus sempervirens, Ocimum basilicum, Pinus sylvestris and Rosmarinus officinalis inhibited more than 80% of AChE activity. Among these, EO from Pinus sylvestris, C. sempervirens and C paradisi exhibited higher values of AChE inhibitory activity, which were 75, 84 and 99% at a concentration of 50 ug/ml, respectively. Finally, EO from C paradisi (grapefruit, GEO) showed the highest inhibitory activity towards AChE, which showed 91% of inhibition at a concentration of 20 ug/ml. We also examined the anti-dementia effects of GEO in mouse by passive avoidance test and Morris water maze test. The model mouse (male, ICR) of dementia (negative control) was induced by administration of scopolamine (1 mg/kg body weight). The latency time of sample group administrated with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.) increased significantly as compared with negative control on passive avoidance test. There were significant recovery from the scopolamine-induced deficits on learning and memory in water maze test through daily administrations with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.). From these results, we conclude that GEO treatment might enhance the cognitive function, suggesting that the EO of C. paradis may be a potential candidate for improvement of perceptive ability and dementia.

The water fern Azolla belongs to the Azollaceae and forms a symbiotic association with a $N_2$-fixing cyanobacterium, referred to as Anabaena azollae, and this association has currently been demonstrated to have potential as a nitrogen source for rice production. Because of that, Azolla fern has been used not only as organic manure in southern China and northern Vietnam for a long time but also as food for animate creatures in the underwater and decontaminant in the water. However, the phenolic compounds and active materials of Azolla have not been examined in detail in the past studies. In the present study, anti-oxidant ability test and experiment to find a particular active material of Azolla imbricata and Azolla imbricata fraction (AIF) were performed. In anti-oxidant test such as DPPH test and lipoxygenase inhibition test, the value of test represented high activities compared with authentic sample - green tea and NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid). In MMP-1 test, related to collagen protection and elasticity of skin, its inhibitory effect was measured over 75 %, and the phenolic compounds of AIF related with this activity were confirmed luteolin derivatives by using FT-IR spectroscopy, element analyzer (EA) and Liquid chromatography-MASS spectroscopy.

Electrically conductive mortar used in industrial carbon material byproducts was manufactured and analyzed in this study. The contents of the carbon material and mixed water were controlled, and the distance between electrodes was set to 0.42 m and 0.88 m. The carbon material was graphite with a layered structure. The carbon material was used as fine powder and aggregate substitutes according to particle size. The average particle sizes of each materials were 18.4㎛ and 546.1 ㎛ and the electrical conductivities were 62.3 S/m and 32.5 S/m, respectively. To maintain similar mortar flow in each sample, the water content was increased with increasing carbon material, and accordingly, the porosity showed an increasing trend. When electrode distance of the mortar (week 6) was 0.42 m, the voltage-current values were 342 V-1.48 A (S20) and 349 V-1.44 A (S30). For electrode distance of 0.88 m, these values were 513 V-0.98 A (S20) and 500 V-1.01 A (S30). The exothermic properties improved with increasing carbon material content and decreasing electrode distance.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyze the differences in factors related to the incidence of dental caries between children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas and compared the DMFT and DMFS scores to confirm the effect of water fluoridation program (WFP) in Geoje and Changwon. Methods: The oral health examination and questionnaire survey were conducted in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. The number of surveyed children aged 8, 10, and 12 years in the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area of two cities was 1,524 and 1,383, respectively. Self-recorded questionnaires included self-perception of their own dental health, daily toothbrushing frequency, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages, experience of gingival bleeding, experience of unmet dental treatment, and use of oral hygiene device except for toothbrush and toothpaste. The prevalence of caries and fissure-sealant status were surveyed. The logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the difference in children's self-rated oral health status between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area. The mean number of sealed teeth and surfaces, marginal means of the DMFT and DMFS scores adjusted for the difference in the samples' sex distribution, and region were compared between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Results: In the fluoridated area, the experience rate of unmet dental treatments was higher among children aged 10 years, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages were higher among the whole sample, and experience rate of professional fluoride application were lower than in the non-fluoridated area. The DMFT score for permanent dentition adjusted for differences in sex, region, and mean number of fissure-sealed teeth in the fluoridated area was significantly lower among whole samples and 8-, 10-, and 12-year-olds alone than in the non-fluoridated area. Conclusions: WFP can alleviate oral health inequality because it is effective in reducing the incidence of caries among children is disadvantaged demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts.
Under high-level radioactive waste repository conditions, bentonite as an engineered barrier material undergoes thermal, hydrological, mechanical, and chemical processes. We report the applications of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) imaging technique on the characterization and analysis of bentonite over the past decade to provide a reference of the utilization of this technique and the recent research trends. This overview of the X-ray CT technique applications includes the characterization of the bentonite either in pellets or powder form. X-ray imaging has provided a means to extract grain information at the microscale and identify crack networks responsible for the pellets' heterogeneity. Regarding samples of pellets-powder mixtures under hydration, X-ray CT allowed the identification and monitoring of heterogeneous zones throughout the test. Some results showed how zones with pellets only swell faster compared to others composed of pellets and powder. Moreover, the behavior of fissures between grains and bentonite matrix was observed to change under drying and hydrating conditions, tending to close during the former and open during the latter. The development of specializing software has allowed obtaining strain fields from a sequence of images. In more recent works, X-ray CT technique has served to estimate the dry density, water content, and particle displacement at different testing times. Also, when temperature was added to the hydration process of a sample, CT technology offered a way to observe localized and global density changes over time.
